Dianne says I decided we should go to Périgueux, one of the cities mentioned in the Bruno, Chief of Policeseries, but I am not sure why that it was chosen. It is the smallest centre we have stayed in. When we arrived, we had our first day of rain this whole trip. We had a few sprinkles before but this was actual rain. Luckily, the walk to the Airbnb was pretty straightforward and we weren’t that wet upon our arrival. Walkabouts were in order and we found our usual supply of churches, city hall and government buildings, as well as lots of old buildings. The cathedral was a lot bigger that we would have expected in a town of only 25,000 or so people. Interesting styling too. One of the first things I noticed ... read more

Actual ALARM this morning (08.00), but didn't matter as we woke before it. We'd promised to meet a friend for lunch, just outside Brive, and even on toll roads it was going to take well over 2 hours - maybe longer as it was foggy when we set off, which would slow us down a lot. However, it cleared after a while, to give us bright sunshine. Quick stops to top up diesel, gas and caffeine (in reverse order) but otherwise just sailed along excellent roads all morning. 10€ toll for the bit of the A62, made us wonder what we'd have to pay for the much longer (150km) stretch of the A20! But as we came to the toll booth, we were flagged down by guys in hi-vis - "gilet jaune" protestors - who'd taken ... read more

Woolly says – The weeks were flying past and with the temperatures dropping sharply we had moved into a warm and snug caravan which other than having to share with Jo and Zoe was wonderful. The glamping tents stand empty so my supervision duties now include apple picking and walnut collecting as well as setting up a new run for chickens. As the house for the chicken folk became ready Jo came up with the ridiculous idea of walking the chickens to their new home, how stupid can you be! I thought it was an eggcellent idea as every time we go to feed them they follow us, how could it fail? Woolly says – I sat watching the humans gather buckets and feeders together and discussing the merits of walnuts versus pistachios with Jerry the ... read more

Tuesday decided to visit Perigueux a city that held out horrors for us as the last time we visited we took in a rather poorly BMW to the local BMW garage. They seemed incapable of sorting the problem out and we came away rather annoyed with them. We hoped that this visit would prove rather better. Parking should have been easy as we found a good site close to the river however it was full and had to resort to the underground car park. Rode round for ages trying to find a spot and eventually when we did find one a nice frenchman came the wrong way down the lane and knicked it. Sion was not happy with him at all. The city was quite compact, we had lunch in a nice little italian bistro up ... read more

So we applied at over 100 vineyards, or chateaux, figuring we'd find work right away. However, it turned out we were about a week late for the whites picking season and a week early for the reds, so most people replied that their 'equipe' was already complete. We wanted to wait one more day (Tuesday) just in case an offer came through and this is where the great trek for a bed began! The hotel we were at was full for that night, so we tried the one next door, and the one down the street, and the one around the block, the one near the train station ... (you get the idea). We came to the conclusion that we needed to get out of the big city to find a cheap hotel to wait in ... read more

I have never made so many cookies in my life. I spent all of Friday baking. Now let me set the scene a little for you. Will has the smallest oven I have ever seen. It is smaller than his microwave. There is one shelf and a normal baking tray does not fit. I baked cookies on some strangely small cake pan...6 at a time. That's right folks, 16 dozen cookies, baked 6 at a time. It does in fact get better. Have you ever shopped for ingredients at a French supermarche? It is not easy. We probably spent 30 minutes looking for baking powder and the closes molasses is probably in Canada. And I forgot about the little measurement differences between the US and the rest of the world. The rest of the world breaks ... read more
