Paris Travel Blogs

Background: Although ultimately a victor in World Wars I and II, France suffered extensive losses in its empire, wealth, manpower, and rank as a dominant nation-state. Nevertheless, France today is one of the most modern countries in the world and is a leader among European nations. Since 1958, it has constructed a presidential democracy resistant to the instabilities experienced in earlier parliamentary democracies. In recent years, its reconciliation and cooperation with Germany have proved central to the economic integration of Europe, including the introduction of a common exchange currency, the euro, in January 1999. At present, France is at the forefront of efforts to develop the EU's military capabilities to supplement progress toward an EU foreign policy.

To Empty a Shell

 Europe » France » Île-de-France » Paris
To empty a shell It was a long time ago, maybe twenty minutes, maybe twenty decades, these details are relatively unimportant. A man crossed the street, a woman bought a loaf of bread, and everything passed as time should pass. A young man died on the Saturday, a blind child was born on the Sunday; both mothers cried, but for very different reasons. It was the perfect life, as close to perfect as can be defined: it was not perfect in the sense of a perfect line, but rather a perfect mistake: like being in love, one learns to accept the [View Full Entry]

I have arrived!

 Europe » France » Île-de-France » Paris
So I have safely made it into Paris. The trip was pretty good save for the lack of leg room. I took melatonin but unfortunately it didn't work. I made friends with my seat-mate, Francis from montreal and we travelled the métro together as well. Met two canadians on the métro as well, and I am meeting them tomorrow, Wednesday night for partying. I met Pablo, the owner of the couch I am surfing, dropped off my very heavy and overpacked bags, and headed out to explore with absolutely no destination in mind (even though i can see the eiffel from [View Full Entry]

Normandie

 Europe » France » Île-de-France » Paris
This weekend was my class trip to Normanie (that's the French spelling) and it was SO much fun. Of course it was overwhelming and the memorials were really very sad and the cemeteries were sadder but the beach was beautiful and we visited an apple orchard where they made cider and the food was some of the best seafood I've ever had, so really it was a great trip. Friday I met my classmates at 8:50 at the Saint-Lazare Train station. It was crazy. There were people EVERYWHERE and everyone was in a very big hurry and very unhappy about it. [View Full Entry]

This weekend has been les Journées européennes du Patrimoine. The only weekend all year where many things in Paris have been completely free, and the only weekend all year when somethings are even open. They are things like, le Palais de l'Élysée where Nicolas Sarkozy lives, private gardens, and all of the foreign embassies. It really is quite a spectacle to see all of the French people walking around. It is so busy! I decided to go for a walk yesterday around le Jardin du Forum des Halles. It was so interesting. There are these outside gardens that very nice to [View Full Entry]

Waiting for the Batobus at Musee D'Orsay
Hello again, Unfortunately we had reached the last full day in Paris. The days went by so quickly as there was so much to do & so little time to do it but we gave it a fair crack. No doubt we had an action packed week but there was also time for resting & enjoying the relaxation. After the magnificence of the Eiffel Tower light show we had a slow morning Friday which included keeping tabs on the Cats v Dogs game. Thanks to all of you who texted me scores & info relevant to the game. It was funny [View Full Entry]

Champ Elysees

After getting up at 5:30 to drive back to Rome we made it to the airport with plenty of time to spare, though finding a petrol station at 8:30 in the morning was a nightmare. The GPS again to the rescue... It actually has a list of near by petrol stations, though the first three or four we looked for were either shut for good, not there any more or closed. Aaaarrrgghhhh. At last we were in Gay Pari'. We navigated our way to our hotel via Paris' fabulous metro and after checking in and unpacking we headed out for a [View Full Entry]

De Micro-Golf Vakantie!

 Europe » France » Île-de-France » Paris

Ah, what can i say, other than Paris is the most awesome city i have ever been to! So much happened in the 2 days that we were there. Visited the Eifel tower at night - all lit up in Blue and it sparkles every hour on the hour for 10mins. Did a day walk starting at Arch de Triumph (watched some idiots try running across the round-a-bout there, so close to death, i lost $10 betting they would... lucky they are able to run for their lives!!!). A wonder down Champs d'Lysses (i cant be bothered looking up the spelling [View Full Entry]
