Background: Although ultimately a victor in World Wars I and II, France suffered extensive losses in its empire, wealth, manpower, and rank as a dominant nation-state. Nevertheless, France today is one of the most modern countries in the world and is a leader among European nations. Since 1958, it has constructed a presidential democracy resistant to the instabilities experienced in earlier parliamentary democracies. In recent years, its reconciliation and cooperation with Germany have proved central to the economic integration of Europe, including the introduction of a common exchange currency, the euro, in January 1999. At present, France is at the forefront of efforts to develop the EU's military capabilities to supplement progress toward an EU foreign policy.

Return to Paris!

 Europe » France » Île-de-France » Paris
Tuesday 26th August (Day 1) We were up early to get Vaughan sorted, as he had left it until the last possible minute (of course) to sort out a lot of his stuff in anticipation of leaving the UK. Vaughan had expected to fit everything in his pack for some crazy reason, and was suddenly hit with the realisation that he needed to go to the Post Office very urgently. So, items eventually but safely packaged and ready to go, we were organised enough to think about heading to the train station. Vaughan hadn’t left us much time for goodbyes, so [View Full Entry]

This Sunday will mark one month in Paris - wow, a month already. I have really enjoyed learning random facts about Paris. For instance, it is illegal for a business in Paris to be open seven days a week. If a business wants to be open on Sunday it has to have a special permit and be closed on another day of the week. If a company is open on a Sunday without the proper permit, it will be fined. I find this very interesting. So, the big news of the day…I got an internship with UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific [View Full Entry]

Hi everyone Apologies for not udating the blog earlier. We either havent had internet access or couldnt publish photos; So much has happened since our last blog. To summarise: We did most of the ride through the Loire visiting all of the major chateaus which were simply stunning. Unfortunately the bad weather contined and we finally admitted defeat at Tours. We went to the train station and found a warmer destination - Bordeaux. We had a great week and a bit of mostly lovely weather and fantastic riding. We went up to the Gironde (great wine area) and spent our last [View Full Entry]

We are flying to India tomorrow. We should be excited. We were a few days ago, and we are starting to get excited again. But... it's so hard to say goodbye to Paris. We just came back from Morocco a couple days ago, and after a month outside of France (Spain and Morocco), we were reminded once again how much we love it. We are staying in a random neighborhood on the outskirts of town. Not a touristy place at all. And yet, even here it is so beautiful and charming. There is the big fountain in the middle of the [View Full Entry]

not much to say...

 Europe » France » Île-de-France » Paris
Nothing to say, really, but I'm still alive, getting through homework, etc., and I don't have my computer back yet. Jessie broke her ankle or her foot (not sure which) while playing badminton, so she's on crutches for the next few weeks. Clara turns six on Friday, and I've managed to get her a present already. I'm impressed with myself. Not. I got a 16 on my math quiz because the teacher apparently wanted a grammatically perfect answer to the question that was supposed make sure we could understand the chart she gave us. Ugh. And yesterday I had tests in [View Full Entry]

Part II

 Europe » France » Île-de-France » Paris
It is easy to fall into the trap of “the daily grind,” passing every day anticipating the next, as if the next would be any different. And I can see this ugly head peer into my life here in Paris; “let me get through tomorrow so that I can get through the next; let me get through the next so I can go on vacation…” However, it is not about the day after tomorrow, the week after next, and the break I get in three weeks: it is about right now. Defining life by what is to come rather than but [View Full Entry]

In our last day of classes before final exams my two language professors, Emmanuelle and Hanadi, combined their classes for the last hour and separated us into groups. The goal was to implement what we had just learned about "slam," a fairly new form of music with a rap like quality. Basically it is like poetry. What you should probably know is that music is looked at completely differently than in the United States. French people care more about the lyrics of a song than the music that goes with them. While in the U.S. lyrics are important, but the music [View Full Entry]

Part I

 Europe » France » Île-de-France » Paris
What is it? There is a sinking feeling that I have; a feeling that people aren’t happy. But then I see him; a man cleaning tables, making sandwiches to people that don’t even look at him when they order. And he is smiling, consistently, singing along to the radio, genuinely telling people to “have a good one.” He is not fit, he is not attractive, and if you had to inquire just by looking at his current employment, you might question his ambition. According to our modern day definition, he is not “successful.” But define successful: is it about making a [View Full Entry]

Another night at the theatre...I could really get used to this. Because one of the classes is a theatre class they end up reading a bunch of plays and then they get to go see them. Fortunately for the rest of us, we get to tag along whenever they go see a play. This time is was called Le Cantatrice chauve, which means "the bald singer," by Eugène Ionesco. I just looked up what the title means, and I am very surprised because the play had absolutely nothing to do with singing, and nobody in it was bald. It ended up [View Full Entry]
