Finland was a province and then a grand duchy under Sweden from the 12th to the 19th centuries and an autonomous grand duchy of Russia after 1809. It won its complete independence in 1917. During World War II, it was able to successfully defend its freedom and resist invasions by the Soviet Union - albeit with some loss of territory. In the subsequent half century, the Finns made a remarkable transformation from a farm/forest economy to a diversified modern industrial economy; per capita income is now on par with Western Europe. As a member of the European Union, Finland was the only Nordic state to join the euro system at its initiation in January 1999. To be updated

Kisko  Europe » Finland
Woke up on a lovely beach with dark clouds overhead. Our first target for the day was the Orijärvi Cooper Mine and the workers' housing quarters. I later found more houses in the back of the mine. Aijala Zinc Mine was our second target for the day, and like it wasn't enough, we also visited the Metsämonttu Zinc Mine, which we could had skipped. Long day that was. [View Full Entry]

Karjalohja & Kisko Europe » Finland
The Cemetary in Karjalohja was not in our list of places to visit, but it was across the street from the store... dead people... We run into a house that quickly became a target on our way, and within five minutes it also became the firstplace we got kicked out of! Mill of Toija. Our actual target of the day, was small and dark. We were not able to photograph inside as much, but we did have some camera/ghost experimenting fun. Don't ask. [View Full Entry]

Lohja Europe » Finland
Kalkkipetteri Factory. Not sure if it was a good or a bad thing to make this site our first Urban Exploration target. We arrived at the place around 3pm. We got in the yard through a fence that had already been cut for us, and walked around for only a few mintues before we found an open door to an area with a huge machine that was turned on! We were VERY careful! The building across from it was much taller and completely abandoned, so we spent a few hours there. At the end of the day we drove and camped [View Full Entry]

Walking around Europe » Finland » Uusimaa » Helsinki
Wondering why people take those bus tours when this is such a small city and the best places to be and the most beautiful sites are hidden on small streets... (Pictures of which will be posted somewhere in the future) Also wondering if I can get a mocha to-go! Coffee is served in glasses and mugs, depending on the kind, and you sit at a table to drink it, sometimes with a pastry, most of which come in huge portions. I'm not sure if the coffee shops have paper cups to give you a coffee to take away! They make the [View Full Entry]

Problem Europe » Finland » Uusimaa » Helsinki
A clear plan for my whole day was put together in my head during my morning walk (not for the workout... from nothing better to do at 5am). The plan: Take care of some paperwork, get cell phone, figure out the bus and train system (that I have not used yet since everything is within walking distance). Action: Walk around for six hours. Buy spoon from second hand store. Buy a CD. Buy another CD. Get coffee while unloading my camera into my brother's mailbox - sorry Alex. I'm going to lock myself in my room until Saturday, or go to [View Full Entry]

Motorhome News from Europe 27. Finland. 12th July 2005 A visit to Santa, north into Finnish Lapland - and snowchains It’s my birthday on Thursday and we have a wager. Janice says I’ll get 3 emails-worth of greetings and I reckon I’ll get about 15! Meanwhile, we’ve been researching the birding hereabouts. Page 77. Where to watch Birds in Scandinavia. ‘Valtavaara. The Tourist Information Center was very helpfull in providing me with addresses for the local police station and a store to get a hair dryer. Free map was included! However, a girl working at a small food store on the basement of a shopping center was happy to tell me of the cheap place to get everything I needed! She also hooked me up with a map. First purchase in Helsinki? Two CDs! I needed them! There was a lot of walking around... A lot of tourists that spoke all different kinds of languages and took pictures of everything with themselves [View Full Entry]

Motorhome News from Europe 26 Sweden 5th July 2005 Across the Arctic Circle - twice; and into Finland If I asked you to paint me a picture of Lapland, it would of course have to include reindeer, wouldn’t it? It would also probably show Lapps in reindeer-skin coats, hood covered heads down, pulling a sleigh in a snow and wind-lashed landscape. Things have changed a bit. These days Sami, the indigenous people of Saapmi go about their business un-noticed and herding on foot is almost a thing of the past. The reindeer live freely in the forest and they are now [View Full Entry]

In Search of Santa Europe » Finland
So another day, another dollar. And so the world turns. And so goes the crazy days of my life. Another week finished, another country conquered. Another whole wack of frequent flyer miles to my name. And where, pray tell, does this fine Saturday find me in the great wild world. Well, I know last week I said that I was domestically bound within Germany to the fine city of cheese. Make that Bremen. But as things turn out, and plans get dashed by the powers that be, life doesn’t always go according to plan. So this week I’m Finnish. Or Finished [View Full Entry]

We had come to Finland to visit our son, wife, granddaughter and family. Esse is a village near Jakobstad, which is about 300 miles north of the capital Helsinki opposite Sweden, across from Umea. First impressions were of vast areas of forest with cleared areas of farmland. I was to learn about the 188 thousand lakes and the interesting weather, it can be -30c. in winter and +30c in summer. What I was totally unprepared for, were the mosquitos by the million, when we went to the lakeside for a picnic, summers are spent outside as much as possible, I should [View Full Entry]
