Our Baltic Sea cruise on Princess Cruises - Saturday, August 6, 2011-Helinski, Finland
Published: August 8th 2011Europe » Finland » Eastern Uusimaa » PorvooBefore arriving in Helinksi we debated where to take a tour in this city since we had already visited the city in 2003, however in the end we decided to take a tour. We arrived at the port around 6:00am. The port area and scene was pretty bland, not very exciting. The temperatures were in the high 50’s and partly cloudy. Weather wise, we should be in good shape. After breakfast we met our tour group and went ashore. No passport control today, thank goodness. Russia was the only country so far where we needed to show our passport so far. Our tour today is an all day tour and will visit several areas and a lunch. The stops include Senate Square, Temppeliauko Rock Church, Steam Train Ride, Porvoo, Sipoo Old Church, Sibelius Park and lunch ... read more

The Life & Times of a Student in Porvoo, Finland
Published: September 7th 2010Europe » Finland » Eastern Uusimaa » PorvooHello to all, Welcome to my first blog, the first of many i hope. I am a student, studying Tourism, and this year i have been sent to Porvoo, Finland, too continue my studies. I have been living in Porvoo for 3 weeks now and i have to say, my first impressions...... They couldn't be better. Porvoo is a small town with a population of over just 50,000, and it is approximately 50km to the east of Helsinki. I arrived here by plane and was taken to my student accommodation by a tutor from the University. When i arrived, i couldn't believe it, i was in the center of a town, but it was like i was living in the forest. The town can be very quite at times, but everyone is very friendly and it ... read more
Wednesday June 30 - Another long day. Didn't sleep that well, or long, at least. I couldn't fall asleep until about 1am, and then got up at 7:30am. I wanted to make sure that I would be in town early enough to buy a ticket for the old fashioned steamship to Porvoo, as they do not sail tomorrow. I managed to get out in time to make the 8:24 am bus, forgetting my breakfast banana in doing so. I brought a lot with me, including my laptop and enormous book, which weighed me down. The laptop was for checking emails after I returned from Porvoo but before I came back to my internet-free luxury guest suite. The book (and journal) were to keep me entertained for the three hour boat ride. In the end, I was ... read more

Sun 03/22/09 (Day 50) - Porvoo & Hameelinna
Published: April 24th 2009Europe » Finland » Eastern Uusimaa » PorvooRising early, relatively, Liz and I grabbed breakfast at the hotel whilst plotting out our course for the day. On the agenda is the town of Porvoo and the castle in Hämeenlinna. So, plan of attack in-hand we jumped in the Prius and hit the road. We rolled into Porvoo around lunchtime, grabbed a tourist guide and headed to the closest cafe. Over coffee and pastries we decided to take the walking tour of the town. Porvoo is an old town, mention of it in documents begins in the early 14th century, with sufficient history. Taking it's name from a nearby Swedish riverside fortress, Porvoo gained notoriety in the 18th century when Sweden lost land to Russia and the town became the episcopal seat and eventually housed the Diet of Porvoo. It's a quaint town with ... read more
You Never Really Know A Country Until You Get Out Of Town
Published: July 18th 2007Europe » Finland » Eastern Uusimaa » PorvooYou Never Really Know A Country Until You Get Out Of Town We’ve been really sad over the last few weeks that we have been relegated to only major cities. Since our time in France we have jumped from one big city to another. While this is a great way to get an overview of country’s culture, it gives you no feeling for what a country is actually like. Most cities, despite having large/important sights, temper their country’s culture with a dose of cosmopolitan-ness (not a word, but you get the point). This means that most people in cities are not necessarily typical of the country’s people as a whole. In order to round out your perspective you must get out of cities and see a small town. We had purposely planned a day more ... read more
I thought it'd be a great experience to take the ferry from Stockholm to Helsinki. Instead of being just a means of transportation, this ferry service has become a mini-vacation of sorts for many Europeans with many options for the traveller including bars, buffet restaurants and of course, shopping. Through this, I''ve managed to encounter a group of Europeans that I would not normally have encountered on the streets of the cities I've been visiting. The vacationers (mostly senior citizens or middle aged folk) stock up on duty-free booze like it was going out of style tomorrow. The duty free alcohol section took up about half the store and offered everything from wine to spirits to of course, vodka. Perhaps its like this on every cruise, but having never been on a north american one, ... read more
Afew weeks ago, I realized that I did not have any plans for the weekend. I, at that point, decided to go to a random nearby town for the day. I wasn’t sure which one I wanted to go to but I thought of Porvoo. When I asked my flatmate if she was doing anything Saturday, to ask if she wanted to join me, she said that she and her friends were going to Porvoo! Talk about coincidences! So I joined them for the day. This adventure was a bit different from the rest, in that I was surrounded by Dutch language instead of the common Polish or Finnish that I hear often. It was a nice change. There were 6 of us and 4 out of the 6 spoke Dutch. We took the 10am ... read more
