Having fun while dad works
Having fun while dad works
Dad had to be on a conference so we had fun our own way.
A while ago dad had the opportunity to go to Tallinn in Estonia with his job. He brought us with him because he thought we would enjoy it. Dad was on a conference much of the time so we had to have fun on our own. But that is not a problem. We know how to enjoy ourselves. Mum and dad can be so boring sometimes so we often have to take matter in our own hands to ensure we have fun at least. First dad was on a conference at his job. Then we spent the time playing with dad's [View Full Entry]

Tallinn
Looking at this makes me think of the word 'strudel'.
I'm jet-setting around Europe now, (is it jet-setting if you've got the middle seat? I'm not sure) and I've landed outside of Russia again. HISTORY ALERT! Tallinn is the capital of Estonia and was founded in 2000 BC. It hosted the 1980 Olympics and is the home of a popular candy known as the "curd snack", which I can assure you I didn't partake in. Curd snack, heh heh. [View Full Entry]

The Logo of the Olympic Games in 1980
The Logo of the Olympic Games in 1980
In Pirita harbour this Olympic Games logo is still standing as a reminder of the past.
I have just come back from a quick visit in Tallinn, Estonia. Strictly this was not a holiday because I was there for a conference. But I had the opportunity to spend a few hours in Tallinn and tried to make the most out of them. I decided on spending the time on visiting two different sights. First Pirita, an area on the coast of the Baltic Sea just north of the City Centre, and then the Old Town. The Old Town is easily the biggest tourist attraction in Tallinn. Most parts of the Old Town dates back to the Middle [View Full Entry]

Tallinn & Riga

 Europe » Estonia » Tallinn
After the craziness that is Russia, Tallinn (Estonia) was a wonderful relief! We were not able to get visas as we were hoping for Belarus but the Baltic's so far have exceeded expectations to make up for it! We arrived in Tallinn early morning after the worst overnight bus I have ever experienced- the heater was on me all night and the icy road made for an uncomfortable bumpy night! None of the luxuries of south American semi-cama just rock hard seats and leg room for midgets. Tallinn old town is a beautifully preserved medieval maze of cobbled streets and squares. I think this picture was missing or broken in the last blog.
The night of my last rambling blog, the hostel people took us out to this sweet hole in the wall bar. Literally a hole in the wall. The bar was made up of what used to be an old courtyard, heated with rickety heat lamps. To get in you had to push through two shabby doorways covered by heavy plastic strips hanging down, you push through them the way cars push through those things at car washes. I was sure that we were sneaking in the back way or something, but no, that was the main entrance. There was no advertising [View Full Entry]

Come stay in our lovely padded cells... don't expect a minibar!
I haven't missed a single transport connection on this whole trip. For me, who's missed his fair share of planes, ferries, and even wedding busses - sometimes by days, this is an amazing achievement. That's why I wasn't too worried about catching an early sunday morning flight out of Poland, the day before i start work in Glasgow, and the morning AFTER a three-way birthday. I should learn not to be so cocky. The plane was leaving at 10am.. I'm not entirely sure what happened after the party, except that everything obviously didn't go to plan. I woke up at 9am.

We've come to the end of our stay here in Tallinn, and will be very sad to leave. It's such a beautiful city, much more so than I (Ciara) could have imagined. The Old Town is entirely surrounded by huge city walls and battlements, and everywhere you look you see another amazing piece of architecture, from the Alexander Nevski orthodox cathedral to the gothic town hall tower in the main cobbled square. Here there was a huge Christmas tree covered in lights, and just around the corner they sold the most beautiful smelling cinnamon nuts from an old cart. We arrived [View Full Entry]
