Estonia Travel Blogs

The most northerly of the chilly Baltics, member of Nato since April 2004 and the European Union since May 2004 Estonia is making great strides with rediscovering their culture and revelling in their newly acquired relative wealth.

Estonian society is however tainted with the aftermath of Soviet occupation with ethnic tension and the ex Soviet style womens liberation making Estonias women reluctant to pursue more rights.

Being sparsly populated, Estonia has wide expanses of forest and lakes.

Visit Estonia and stay warm in one of medieval Tallinns candlelit cellars with the delicious Estonian speciality hot chocolate and truffles or take an Estonian style weekend get away to the Islands of Saaremaa and Hiiumaa on any day of the week.

Sohfie
Her almost asleep on my hand.
This cat pretty much makes my night. Whenever I am in my room reading or online, she always comes to visit me. We are pals and I decided that this cat makes me giggle so much that I am dedicating an entry to her. Sohfie is her name and she is one of the best host cats ever. Just take a look at the video and some of the pictures!!! I know it is weird because this is a travel blog site yet this is a real buddy of mine here. The cat is just like another member of the family [View Full Entry]

This whole week I don't have school because of fall break and I find it rather interesting. Of course Halloween isn't nearly as popular here as it is in America, yet some people go trick-or-treating and have costume parties. I hope to find some in town soon. My adventures today consisted of the following: searching for some soap, telling someone of New Jersey, and seeing HSM 3. My day started off with getting my picture taken at the migration office because the last two sets I have sent in with my visa have been incorrect. After that, my host mum went [View Full Entry]

Getting lost in Tallinn Europe » Estonia » Tallinn
Monday, July 21’St I’m leaving Riga at 10 am with Eurlines to Tallinn, where I arrive a little past 2 pm. Then things start to go wrong! First of all the busterminal is not at the spot where I thought it would be - it’s much further away from the city-center than expected. This means that I get lost on my walk to the hotel, which honestly shouldn’t have been a walk, but a taxi-ride. It takes 1½ hour of walking before I find my hotel in Tallins Old Town called Meriton Old Town. Then it’s certainly time for a break. [View Full Entry]

i'm so easily amused! first it was kiek in de kok, now it's a supermarket chain in estonia that is called 'konsum'. so yeah, add an E on the end of that and you get me chuckling. so that, plus me eating crisps that have a pirate on the packet, and im getting strange looks for my chuckling. am spending a quiet evening in me couchsurfers apartment, watching some strange film about christina ricci having a lesbian affair with a murderous prostitute, who i have to say is an absolute goit. its a pretty silly. she's getting stressed because she cant [View Full Entry]

i keep forgetting what day it is! very lame! well, it's wednesday, yesterday was tuesday and the last time i wrote one of these was monday, so here's the old 'what i've done since last time' entry. it's been a nice couple of days, so strap in for some cheeriness. arrived in tallinn a little earlier than expected monday night, it must have been about 11pm i think. i decided that the wisest move would be to get a taxi to the hostel and then, as i hadnt slept since sunday morning, sleep my little chops off. so yeah, got into [View Full Entry]

SONG FESTIVAL GROUNDS
SONG FESTIVAL GROUNDS
tHE STAGE CAN HOLD 25,000 PERFORMERS, GROUNDS 500,000
excerpted from Our Summer in Estonia see my profile for more information) Worldwide there are many well known and highly regarded musical festivals. They take different forms. Some, for example, celebrate a prolific and renowned composer, such as Wagner or Mozart. Others represent a style of music such as opera at Spoleto and jazz at Monterey. What's more, these festivals endure as commercial successes, filling hotels and cafes with tourists. But I don't know of another festival as unique as the Estonian Song Festival, unique for several reasons. The first reason is its frequency, being hel [View Full Entry]

Estonian tour on the run! Europe » Estonia » Tartu
My roomie and I
My roomie and I
We felt crazy because it was so cold
So many different things have happened that I find it hard to summarize everything that I want to write about. First off, last weekend I went on Estonian tour and it was grand! Basically, that is the topic of the authors’ choice right now. The tour started on a Thursday (I know!) and lasted until Saturday evening. Not only was it fantastic to see the other kids, it was so stupendous to get to be acting like a tourist and seriously not give one ounce of thought to it! All of walked around with cameras, snapping random shots of each other, [View Full Entry]

Brothers from different Mothers When I crossed over the border into Mongolia, by train a month or so previeously, I realised that I had in fact never really crossed a border before. Taking planes, illiminates the ability to actually see border crossings and how close together most countries live. It makes you realise that in the UK we have been lucky in the past to never really have borders and no doubt it has saved out bacon on numnerous occaisions. In these fragile relationships, always held together or pushed apart by geography, politics and cultural difference, it is interse [View Full Entry]
