Estonia Travel Blogs

The most northerly of the chilly Baltics, member of Nato since April 2004 and the European Union since May 2004 Estonia is making great strides with rediscovering their culture and revelling in their newly acquired relative wealth.

Estonian society is however tainted with the aftermath of Soviet occupation with ethnic tension and the ex Soviet style womens liberation making Estonias women reluctant to pursue more rights.

Being sparsly populated, Estonia has wide expanses of forest and lakes.

Visit Estonia and stay warm in one of medieval Tallinns candlelit cellars with the delicious Estonian speciality hot chocolate and truffles or take an Estonian style weekend get away to the Islands of Saaremaa and Hiiumaa on any day of the week.

(Excerpted from my book Our Summer in Estonia available at Amazon.com) Mid-week and mid-summer, a perfect time, with few tourists around and most people at work, to leave Tallinn for a day in the country. We decided on a day trip to Lahemma National Park and Land of Bays, which lies about 70 miles (100km) east of Tallinn and halfway to Narva, a major Estonian city that borders Russia. The park spreads about 40 miles along the northern coast and was designated a national park in 1971. It remains mostly unspoiled , very forested, with a few small villages and the [View Full Entry]

I am sorry that this has taken so long to write yet I have been quite busy lately. To start it off, I moved from Tartu to Saaremaa- the biggest out of the three Estonian islands. I live right in the capital city called Kuressaare and it is wonderful. My family here is made up of my host mum, my host dad, and three host brothers. One of them (Taavi) lives in Tartu and goes to University there so I don’t see much of him. He visits every now and then though. He is 20 years old. The next oldest is [View Full Entry]

Tartu- Christmas Town
Tartu- Christmas Town
They set up a merry-go-round, and a few stand where people sold goods; blood sausage, mittens, scarves, cookies, chocolates, postcards and more.
I will start off with some news that some people may find irrelevant, weird, and out of the blue. I got my visa! Officially, I am allowed to stay in the country until three months past the end of April! It is exciting that I don’t have to deal with that any more. My host sister took me to this place (kind of like the post office) and we waited for our number to be called, took up my passport, and then the lady ran some numbers, did this and that, and in less than a few minutes produced this little [View Full Entry]

1988 SONG FESTIVAL
1988 SONG FESTIVAL
Note the earnest yearning on the faces, and the Estonian flag, illegal at the time.
(Excerpted from my book...Our Summer in Estonia...Amazon.com) As Communist Party control began to unravel when Gorbachev loosened the reins, Estonians tested their strength, timidly at first, and then with growing courage. It was a s though the jailor left the door open, but prisoners were unsure of their next move. Should they take a step out and see what happens, then another? Then run, run, run. The Estonian people turned to song to begin testing their new limits. In September 1988, not a festival year and a year before the Berlin Wall came down, some 300,000 people, a quarter of the [View Full Entry]

I love Lapland! It is in a very northern part of Finland, and I was there with the other exchangies for about four days. It was so wonderful! If you have ever heard 'walking in a winter wonderland', imagine that in REAL LIFE! That is pretty much exactly how Lapland was. There was so much snow that someone from Arizona and New Mexico, would have thought that it was impossible, except for on television. Nope, it exsists. Now, be prepared to be taken on quite an adventure. Because I live in Estonia, I first had to go to Finland. No worries- [View Full Entry]

I woke in the morning to the tune of three snoring noses, a stuffy cabin, and blaring music. We had attempted to throw a makeshift 'party' in our cabin the night before, and the music selected 6am as the opportune time to begin working. Unable to sleep further, I got dressed and walked to the upper deck to look out over the water. We were about to land. I went to the breakfast buffet- leftovers from last night's meal- and ate. And thought. It was the most 'out of my element' I had felt in a very long time and I [View Full Entry]

Morning Frost
Morning Frost
this was from the first frost!
It seriously was! Actually, there has been so much that has happened. Today first. There have been a few mornings when I go outside to get in the car to go to school, and there is frost on the ground. No big deal since it just signified that it was a little colder than before. So when I walked outside this morning, I noticed that there was frost. Fantastic. Now, I start walking into the building of school and notice that there are white things on my sleeves that were NOT there before. Snow. The dreaded word pops into my head. [View Full Entry]

Soviet Era Song Festival
Soviet Era Song Festival
Note Pix of Lenin, people mostly in red, and red bannered stand for party officials
(Excerpted from Our Summer in Estonia Amazon.com) Estonia's association as a singing nation began in the city of Tartu, home of Tartu University, in June, 1869. The inspiration for a national song festival came from Johann Voldemar Jannsen, a leader of a movement known as the National Awakening a mid-19th century period, when Estonia's long suppressed people set about discovering and creating a national identity. Jannsen founded the first Estonian newspaper. His name sounds German, because when serfdom was abolished, many Estonians took their Baltic German master's name. who, in Jannsen's c [View Full Entry]
