Estonia Travel Blogs

The most northerly of the chilly Baltics, member of Nato since April 2004 and the European Union since May 2004 Estonia is making great strides with rediscovering their culture and revelling in their newly acquired relative wealth.

Estonian society is however tainted with the aftermath of Soviet occupation with ethnic tension and the ex Soviet style womens liberation making Estonias women reluctant to pursue more rights.

Being sparsly populated, Estonia has wide expanses of forest and lakes.

Visit Estonia and stay warm in one of medieval Tallinns candlelit cellars with the delicious Estonian speciality hot chocolate and truffles or take an Estonian style weekend get away to the Islands of Saaremaa and Hiiumaa on any day of the week.

It has bee some time since i wrote on the blog and i am doing it now because during this weekend i had experienced something very strange that made me think about a lot of things. This has nothing to do with traveling, seeing new places or meeting new cultures, this is a picture of how Romania looks in my mind somehow.. Friday afternoon, after coming back from work and seeing some apartments i went straight to bed, for a quick nap, just because i was a bit tired and i wanted to go out in the evening. During this [View Full Entry]

We were really fortunate with the weather today. It was blazing hot and Tallin looked like somewhere in the Med! I started off by taking a swim in the ship’s pool as Carole woke up back in the cabin. We had been informed that Estonia accepts only the local currency but this proved to be false as everything is priced in Euros too-and dollars. We exchanged Euros on board for the local stuff and managed to also obtain some Russian roubles for tomorrow. Looking around from the ship’s deck we got the impression that Estonia was from the 21st century exclusively. [View Full Entry]

Tallinn, Estonia Yippee!!!! Marion and John are onboard. And the luggage is here too. Once they settled in, we left to explore Tallinn. The city has been an important commercial port throughout its long history. It is located fifty miles from Helsinki, Finland and many Finns come across by ferry to party and pick up cheap liquor. Tonight, Madonna will be performing so we expect to see Madonna fans as we tour. We board a Hop-on-Hop off bus, HOHO, and ride through the modern lower town. The weather is sunny and Tallinn sparkles. The real gem is the Upper Town, an [View Full Entry]

Today we spent sailing from Germany to Estonia. We had a mixed day. We started by taking a swim and then went in a hot tub. The weather suddenly turned to thick fog which seemed odd as it obscured the ship’s radar tower and swirled across the deck. We had brunch at 11. It was a special event with French style food and a jazz accompaniment. I ate a hearty meal and Carole enjoyed her food, too. I have never had Chateaubriand at that time of day before. It seemed appropriate to follow it with Belgium waffles. To make up for [View Full Entry]

Tallinn: 2nd - 5th August 2009 We saw Madonna in Tallinn. There. I said it. Now, you are probably having one of two reactions. You are possibly thinking: “I can't believe they paid money to see that nutty lady.” Or, you are thinking: “I bet that was a great show. She's quite a force in music, and a performer that anyone should see.” As we've all noticed, being the King of Rock or Pop equals hazardous duty, and I've come to the conclusion that, even if you aren't crazy about a major artist, you have to see them because there may [View Full Entry]

Hey, I just got back from Tallinn, and having expected to find a bunch of stag parties dressed in Telly Tubby outfits and shouting abuse at everyone, imagine my surprise when that turned out NOT to be the case at all... I had a fantastic trip - Estonians are so friendly! Of course I followed my usual path of going the alternative route - the Funky Bike tour was great, took in a bunch of Soviet legacy buildings (I'm secretly in love with concrete blocks!) and met some great people. Soomaa National Park: 29th -30th July 2009 In a land far away, where time is counted not in seconds but instead in seasons, where the wind speaks only to the hardiest, where the Empire of the Mosquito rules the land by awesome might, there went a man who wanted but one thing: a cold beer. But in his quest, he alone would take on the dreaded armies of the Mosquito Empire and their staunchest of allies, the nefarious Horsefly Nation. Few remember him now (due to the short visit), but the scribes recorded well their battle on th [View Full Entry]

After a 6 hour train ride, picking up our car in Helsinki, then a 2 hour ferry ride, we arrived in Tallinn, Estonia. We stayed with couchsurfers again, and this time it was Luis and Maria. They are from Venezuela and moved to Estonia a couple years ago. They were very nice. We took a walk around the old part of Talinn with Luis and then met up with Maria. The old town looked like a village in a fairy tale, and I liked it a lot. The next day while they were working, daddy and I walked all over town. [View Full Entry]

The Cobblestones Europe » Estonia » Tallinn
As we only had half a day in Tallinn, Jenn and I rented bikes to tour the city. I got a sweet brown citybike that rode like a charm, while Jenn opted for a smaller mountain bike. This was before we learned that the old town of Tallinn was completely covered in cobblestone! The city is absolutely charming, reminds me of York. Both are medieval towns with cobblestone streets, bowing buildings, gates, city walls, etc. We visited most of the major sites and churches and I even think I ran into the Estonian president as he was pulling into the Royal [View Full Entry]

St Petersburg onwards OK guys - here's the latest update. I believe I left you having got the Red Arrow to St Petersburg. Before I head into the next section, let me just give you a quick overview of the journey so far. China - high - Great Wall - we did Mutianu but the better one to do is where you walk one of the old sections for about 4kms. The section we did was one of the more touristy parts and had been restored. Still a fantastic thing to see though. Lows - the smog and the heat. Quirky [View Full Entry]
