Estonia Travel Blogs

The most northerly of the chilly Baltics, member of Nato since April 2004 and the European Union since May 2004 Estonia is making great strides with rediscovering their culture and revelling in their newly acquired relative wealth.

Estonian society is however tainted with the aftermath of Soviet occupation with ethnic tension and the ex Soviet style womens liberation making Estonias women reluctant to pursue more rights.

Being sparsly populated, Estonia has wide expanses of forest and lakes.

Visit Estonia and stay warm in one of medieval Tallinns candlelit cellars with the delicious Estonian speciality hot chocolate and truffles or take an Estonian style weekend get away to the Islands of Saaremaa and Hiiumaa on any day of the week.

Estonia - Tallinn Tallinn has the most picturesque old town we’ve seen so far. Like a lot of old towns, the modern city of Tallinn has grown around it, making it pretty much the centre. But not many people live there, and there are hardly any modern shops. It just seems to function as the main tourist attraction. Almost everyone working there is in costume, selling traditional Estonian stuff. Normally we hate this sort of thing, but for some reason it worked really well and it was a lovely, quaint place. This time I had a bed to sleep on. The last time I caught the cruise ship from Turku to Stockholm I had the floor as a bed but this time was different, I had a cabbin. We set sail from Stockholm bound for Tallinn. Everyone crowded on to the sun deck and gazed out over the waters as they sipped thier beers. Feet up, I joined in the relaxing activities while being serenaded by the small band piping out a few ancient sea chanties. Later that night we were given a performance in the theater. It was a cross between [View Full Entry]

Its hard to say that we were in St Petersburg because so much of it was seen through the windows of a bus and as far as I am concerned unless I can mooch into whichever street/restaurant/shop or museum I please and make some sort of connection with the people then it seems fairly pointless to be there at all. I would have got much the same impression from a travel programme on TV. Anyway the guide, a Russian called Vladimir, fixed us all up with headsets and then put his own on " Ladies and Gentlemen, can you hear me?" [View Full Entry]

Day trip to Tallinn Europe » Estonia » Tallinn
The day before, we bought our hydrofoil tickets for roundtrip to Tallinn. It's outside the EU, so we had to go through passport control each way (adding new stamps to the passport -- rare since travel in EU doesn't require). Tallinn is an old medevial town. The old town is basically intact, although some parts were bombed in WWII. We always have thought of it as Soviet, but it was free before WWII (and under Swedish, German and Russian influence in the centuries before). The town and is really more Nordic than Russian, and apparently was happy to reopen interaction with [View Full Entry]

Day 106: July 20 - FINLAND - Helsinki, ESTONIA - Tallinn Accommodation: Tallinn Backpackers I tried to sleep in as long as I could today after the extra awake time forced upon me, and I had no plans after seeing what I wanted to yesterday, so I stored my bags and went straight for the net cafe, which was in fact a decent cafe with about 8 internet terminals. Surprisingly it's hard to find a net cafe that serves a good cafe coffee. I scored a yummy Finnish-style mocha and a cake to go along with a couple of hours of [View Full Entry]

So were the hell is Estonia I hear you thinking? And why would anyone want to go there?! Estonia is on the Baltic Sea, just below Finland, with Sweden to the west and Russia to the east. In 1991 Estonia broke free from Communist rule and in 2004 its tiny population of 1.4 million joined the EU. I was keen to visit Estonia's capital Tallinn, hoping to find a quaint little city, off the Eurail tourist trail, that was undiscovered, quaint and just a little bit different. I got all that and a whole lot more! Tallinn is modern and progressive, [View Full Entry]

Hello everybody, It was the weekend before I left for Russia, so I took the ferry across the Gulf of Finland to Estonia. It is one of the countries under Soviet domination for so many years. They are proud of their independance. I arrived on a Friday afternoon. In the other countries I found that booking a hotel in advance didn't work. Most of them lie about the distance from the train station--a ten minute walk is more like 25 and I would pass lots of places on the way that would have been just fine. So I thought that a [View Full Entry]

Well first of all I'd like to say a big THANK YOU! to Dana who paid for this tour as my birthday present. I think its one of the best birthday presents I've ever had since I had so much fun!! Our Scandinavian Escapade party tour started with Dana, Amy and I meeting our tour group at Gatwick airport. We found the tour guide who was in a slight panic as the airline had issed all the tickets but had somehow forgotten mine! Luckily he came back a few minutes later and all was sorted so off we went to check [View Full Entry]
