Estonia Travel Blogs

The most northerly of the chilly Baltics, member of Nato since April 2004 and the European Union since May 2004 Estonia is making great strides with rediscovering their culture and revelling in their newly acquired relative wealth.

Estonian society is however tainted with the aftermath of Soviet occupation with ethnic tension and the ex Soviet style womens liberation making Estonias women reluctant to pursue more rights.

Being sparsly populated, Estonia has wide expanses of forest and lakes.

Visit Estonia and stay warm in one of medieval Tallinns candlelit cellars with the delicious Estonian speciality hot chocolate and truffles or take an Estonian style weekend get away to the Islands of Saaremaa and Hiiumaa on any day of the week.

The mystery location you were all so eagerly awaiting was a little farm known as Loode Talu on the Tagamõisa Peninsula of Saaremaa Island, Estonia. Estonia is a lovely place full of vast tracks of land, both literal and figurative; verdant forests, lakes dotting the countryside at regular intervals, and very attractive women - Stockholm still has it though. It's little wonder that there is so much greenery to see, however, given how proud Estonians are of it. They seem to put a good deal of effort into maintaining it. I know you were hoping to hear about Tallinn, but it [View Full Entry]

I was up bright and early this morning for our expedition around northern Estonia. I was greeted at the front desk with some good news - my bag was in the country and being sent my way! Woo! The Dutch guy who owns the hostel wrote a guide book (THE guidebook in the Dutch speaking world, apparently) to the Baltics and was going to be showing us some cool places around the north in his funky old blue minibus. You always seem to get a good mix from Youth hostels - today was no different. Accompanied by an older Taiwanese lady, [View Full Entry]

Back to Tallinn Europe » Estonia
Last night was very pleasant, even if I was completely knackered due to my exploits the previous night. Maarit was very understanding and pointed out that it was Sunday and that her friends weren’t around for going out anyhow! Today we walked through Tartu on the way to the bus station. We visited Barclay square, where the Soviets rounded up all their political prisoners and transported them in cattle trucks to the gulag, or worse. We passed the music school from which was emanating classical music being practiced. We listened to that as we hid under a bridge to shelter from [View Full Entry]

Today began with a hangover… Again. This seems to be becoming a pattern here in Tallinn. I was aiming to meet the Aussie girls at the bus station at about quarter to nine, but by the time I had been on an anti-hangover mission to Mc Donald's for a “Big Tasty” and made it back to the hostel to get a cab, the 10 o clock bus we had agreed to catch had already left. Never mind! I caught a taxi from the hostel and chatted with the driver in Russian about how Russian language is used in the Baltics these [View Full Entry]

Here we go! Europe » Estonia » Tallinn
So, the adventure really begins! I was up at 5.30 this morning to catch the plane from plymouth to Gatwick and then onto Tallinn here in Estonia. I made the trip fine, however, my baggage obviously wasn' t so fortunate and hasn't made it as far as Tallinn... After filing my lost baggage report at the airport, I attempted to find my way to the hostel. I took a bus that looked important and hoped for the best. The bus took me through some pretty ropy looking neighbourhoods and past numerous sex shops and what I assume are brothels down to [View Full Entry]

It was! Took it easy the first day. Day two got up early to see the city. Turns out (We weren't paying attention when we arrived) we were situated right in the middle of the old town. The polish weather followed us and it poured rain the whole day. This drove us to a tour of the "Oldest City Hall in Northern Europe" and vast improvement in our knowledge of limestone. Who knew there was so much to know about limestone...... In fairness the interior was beautiful and quite interesting. We found an english bar as the craving for burgers was [View Full Entry]

Estonia - Tallinn Tallinn has the most picturesque old town we’ve seen so far. Like a lot of old towns, the modern city of Tallinn has grown around it, making it pretty much the centre. But not many people live there, and there are hardly any modern shops. It just seems to function as the main tourist attraction. Almost everyone working there is in costume, selling traditional Estonian stuff. Normally we hate this sort of thing, but for some reason it worked really well and it was a lovely, quaint place. Saaremaa This is an Estonian island. We went here [View Full Entry]

This time I had a bed to sleep on. The last time I caught the cruise ship from Turku to Stockholm I had the floor as a bed but this time was different, I had a cabbin. We set sail from Stockholm bound for Tallinn. Everyone crowded on to the sun deck and gazed out over the waters as they sipped thier beers. Feet up, I joined in the relaxing activities while being serenaded by the small band piping out a few ancient sea chanties. Later that night we were given a performance in the theater. It was a cross between [View Full Entry]

Its hard to say that we were in St Petersburg because so much of it was seen through the windows of a bus and as far as I am concerned unless I can mooch into whichever street/restaurant/shop or museum I please and make some sort of connection with the people then it seems fairly pointless to be there at all. I would have got much the same impression from a travel programme on TV. Anyway the guide, a Russian called Vladimir, fixed us all up with headsets and then put his own on " Ladies and Gentlemen, can you hear me?" [View Full Entry]

Day trip to Tallinn Europe » Estonia » Tallinn
The day before, we bought our hydrofoil tickets for roundtrip to Tallinn. It's outside the EU, so we had to go through passport control each way (adding new stamps to the passport -- rare since travel in EU doesn't require). Tallinn is an old medevial town. The old town is basically intact, although some parts were bombed in WWII. We always have thought of it as Soviet, but it was free before WWII (and under Swedish, German and Russian influence in the centuries before). The town and is really more Nordic than Russian, and apparently was happy to reopen interaction with [View Full Entry]
