Estonia Travel Blogs

The most northerly of the chilly Baltics, member of Nato since April 2004 and the European Union since May 2004 Estonia is making great strides with rediscovering their culture and revelling in their newly acquired relative wealth.

Estonian society is however tainted with the aftermath of Soviet occupation with ethnic tension and the ex Soviet style womens liberation making Estonias women reluctant to pursue more rights.

Being sparsly populated, Estonia has wide expanses of forest and lakes.

Visit Estonia and stay warm in one of medieval Tallinns candlelit cellars with the delicious Estonian speciality hot chocolate and truffles or take an Estonian style weekend get away to the Islands of Saaremaa and Hiiumaa on any day of the week.

After the craziness that is Russia, Tallinn (Estonia) was a wonderful relief! We were not able to get visas as we were hoping for Belarus but the Baltic's so far have exceeded expectations to make up for it! We arrived in Tallinn early morning after the worst overnight bus I have ever experienced- the heater was on me all night and the icy road made for an uncomfortable bumpy night! None of the luxuries of south American semi-cama just rock hard seats and leg room for midgets. Tallinn old town is a beautifully preserved medieval maze of cobbled streets and squares. Art Noveau Architecture Around Riga
Outside our apartment in Tallian

The night of my last rambling blog, the hostel people took us out to this sweet hole in the wall bar. Literally a hole in the wall. The bar was made up of what used to be an old courtyard, heated with rickety heat lamps. To get in you had to push through two shabby doorways covered by heavy plastic strips hanging down, you push through them the way cars push through those things at car washes. I was sure that we were sneaking in the back way or something, but no, that was the main entrance. There was no advertising [View Full Entry]

Back to the real world Europe » Estonia » Tallinn
In the last week and a half I've been through Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia. I've said "Arrr" to a drink with a real-life Sweedish pirate in Riga, "ahh..." to some incredibly hot 'dancers' in Tallin, "uhh??" to ticket sales and collection people pretty much everywhere, and most importantly "aha!" finally finding Shane sleeping in a backpackers in the far north of mainland Europe. Right now we're on a 21h journey back to Wroclaw for a final two days of freedom before I have to fly to Scotland and begin to again make a worthwhile contribution to society. It's been an [View Full Entry]

We've come to the end of our stay here in Tallinn, and will be very sad to leave. It's such a beautiful city, much more so than I (Ciara) could have imagined. The Old Town is entirely surrounded by huge city walls and battlements, and everywhere you look you see another amazing piece of architecture, from the Alexander Nevski orthodox cathedral to the gothic town hall tower in the main cobbled square. Here there was a huge Christmas tree covered in lights, and just around the corner they sold the most beautiful smelling cinnamon nuts from an old cart. We arrived [View Full Entry]

Häid Pühi (Happy Holidays) from Tartu, Estonia!!! Well it certainly has been a while since I’ve been in touch with most of you, and as you can see I'm still in in the Baltics in the beautiful little country of Estonia. I’ve been here since the start of September so I’ve had a real opportunity to get to know what life is like here. Now that I think back on the last four months I really have done a lot of cool stuff. It really too hard to capture it all here but some of the things which stand out for [View Full Entry]

Tallinn
Fairytale Tallinn
Tallinn-Old Town

I thought I should ask the pretty girl working at a medieval cart in the heart of Tallinn's old town. "Yes" she replied without hesitation, "if you have your paper and brushes you may begin." I looked at her blankly then repeated, "No, I would like to take a photograph." "Not at all" she responded "just take out your brushes." Huh, now I was really getting confused "Er, I mean with my camera." while pointing at said apparatus for added emphasis "What?" she exclaimed with a frown "I don't know what you are talking about. Weird people!" Finally the penny dropped, [View Full Entry]

Autumn closes in
Old town, Tallinn
Old town

I know, random, huh? Who goes to Estonia? Is it really a country? Well it is. And I did. This small little country is located right at the top of the "Baltic States" (Estonia actually prefers to be included as a Nordic state, not Baltic... but usually people group them with the Baltics), just West of Russia and South of Finland. It also had a coastline on the Baltic Sea (naturally). We flew there from Prague and got put up in some pretty nice hotel rooms. It rained pretty badly the first night, and everyone was a little jet-lagged, so we [View Full Entry]
