Estonia Travel Blogs

The most northerly of the chilly Baltics, member of Nato since April 2004 and the European Union since May 2004 Estonia is making great strides with rediscovering their culture and revelling in their newly acquired relative wealth.

Estonian society is however tainted with the aftermath of Soviet occupation with ethnic tension and the ex Soviet style womens liberation making Estonias women reluctant to pursue more rights.

Being sparsly populated, Estonia has wide expanses of forest and lakes.

Visit Estonia and stay warm in one of medieval Tallinns candlelit cellars with the delicious Estonian speciality hot chocolate and truffles or take an Estonian style weekend get away to the Islands of Saaremaa and Hiiumaa on any day of the week.

so this was Kuressaare on the full second day - with sunshine, after day of arrival when I ended up rreading my book and then spending the rest of the evening in the Vinoteek (see separate bibulous account) - Barbara said I thought was A. A. Milne - had to Wikipedia that one, as I thought he was the bloke who wrote Winnie the Pooh and other stories (or maybe he did that AND wrote about food for the Sunday Times!). Anyway finally down to the Kuressaare Bishop's Palace [marked on the map attached generally as Vallekraav - it does not [View Full Entry]

Tallinn Europe » Estonia » Tallinn
Ah, our first full day in Tallinn! The beginning of this was marked by the best thing we’d seen in a while -- the inside of our eyelids. We slept like champs. We slept like we hadn’t seen a bed in over 36 hours which, as we calculated, was approximately true. After waking up and having a leisurely breakfast -- a poor man’s version of what the Danes call smørrebrød (dense bread, Edam, and some sliced ham was what we could procure at the store), yogurt, and coffee -- we left the apartment at the crack of 11 AM to make [View Full Entry]

Kuressaare update Europe » Estonia » Saaremaa » Kuressaare
I am now on Saaremaa island the largest in Estonia - in a place called Kuressaare, which is the biggest town here - but we are only talking about 11,000 people so WAY smaller than anywhere else I have been. It was quite a surprise to come somewhere so small. However I was ale to use my initiative and found a pretty reasonable hotel not mentioned in the LP (Lonely Planet) the Arabella which was only 500Eek (thats Estonian krons - about 9 to Aussie dollar - so that was pretty reasonable. The bus ride to Kuressaare [View Full Entry]

Tallinn Airport
Tallinn Airport
Airports in Northern Europe are weirdly pretty.
After returning to Arlanda airport in Stockholm, we breezed our way back through security (have I mentioned how much less painful it is to travel through Europe?) at the international terminal and perused the duty-free store, picking up [url=http://www.cybercandy.co.uk/aaasmt/index.php/url_indprod/xlc_2185/Mentos%20Lakrits%20%281%20roll%29.html]tasty candy morsels. Ambling toward our gate for the ARN --> TLL flight, we started to experience a sense of deja-vu. We go [View Full Entry]

photos seem difficult to add sometimes - so map only here - central Tallinn - the green area to left is labelled Toom park - in Estonian its Toompea - where all the important things like the Parliament and a couple of very interesting churches are - Alexander Nevsky Cathedral (still trying to upload pix of those) and that of St Mary - which is completely different - lovely organ which was playing when I visited - and very involved and elaborate coats of arms all around the walls [View Full Entry]

Helsinki church
I think it is called Kallion Kirkko (last being church - no surprise there)
OK folks - in Tallinn and this day 3 and I leave tomorrow - to go somewhere - better have a read and work out where that is going to be I expect! as I have been so slack in getting myself organised to "do the sights" I had to book an extra nite (but its very nice here anyway of course - medieval city blah blah) in the St Olav's hotel (more on that later) on the net via Expedia-AU as it is way cheaper than paying direct here - I paid around 750 E Kroons - local rate is [View Full Entry]

tie dye? no hippies really, just running out of titles for these things. This is my 4th night in Tallinn - and I have not seen a lot really as too slow to get going and so forth - knowing that it is not dark til 10pm really means that you can justify (sort of) not getting out of the hotel room til 3pm (like today) - but I was updating my photo blog Mum, gimme a break. well another photoblog update, now that I have solved the technical problem, and can take suitably small files separately to upload to keep [View Full Entry]

AIR DEFENSE MISSILE SITE
AIR DEFENSE MISSILE SITE
Ready line for mobile launchers. Elysee is on watch.
(From my book OUR SUMMER IN ESTONIA, AMAZON.COM) It’s ironic that my second historical interest on Muhu spans those 800 years, with the battle of 1227, representing the beginning of Estonian subjugation, and a deserted Soviet air defense missile site representing the final shaking off of Estonia’s foreign occupation. Muhu was off limits to all but the island’s residents, for the almost fifty years of Soviet Union occupation following WWII. In addition to Soviet paranoia that someone might escape their loving embrace by sea to Sweden, Muhu was a restricted site becau [View Full Entry]
