Estonia Travel Blogs

The most northerly of the chilly Baltics, member of Nato since April 2004 and the European Union since May 2004 Estonia is making great strides with rediscovering their culture and revelling in their newly acquired relative wealth.

Estonian society is however tainted with the aftermath of Soviet occupation with ethnic tension and the ex Soviet style womens liberation making Estonias women reluctant to pursue more rights.

Being sparsly populated, Estonia has wide expanses of forest and lakes.

Visit Estonia and stay warm in one of medieval Tallinns candlelit cellars with the delicious Estonian speciality hot chocolate and truffles or take an Estonian style weekend get away to the Islands of Saaremaa and Hiiumaa on any day of the week.

What do crazy wigs, blokes dressed up in cow suits, bungy jumping, traditional dancing, choral singing, hark rock, sausages and techno music have in common? Beer. Yes in Estonia all of these sometime complimentary, sometimes contradictory forces were brought together under the uniting and liberating force of beer, resulting in the Tallinn beer festival. One could say that it was a case of expert organisational skills that we timed our visit to Tallinn with the beer festival, but rather it was by sheer luck that we discovered that there was a festival on and that we would be there at the [View Full Entry]

When Lindsay and I were planning our trip this summer, we were always keeping an eye out for cheap budget flights. One great deal that we found was a flight on Easyjet from Berlin to Tallinn, Estonia. We also found a flight from Helsinki (a short ferry ride across the Baltic Sea from Tallinn) back to Cologne, Germany. It turns out the cost of the two budget flights plus the ferry was comparable to the cost of train tickets from Berlin to Cologne. So, we thought why not, and so we went. Tallinn was a different city than we have [View Full Entry]

Spent this week on a whistlestop tour of the Baltic states, 2 days each in Vilnius (Lithuania), Riga (Latvia) and Tallinn (Estonia) with long bus journeys between them. Very interesting places - surprised by the diversity between the three capitals. Vilnius isn't very touristy (not a very picturesque town), Riga has a very cool Old Town filled with old churches and Art Nouveau buildings and Tallinn looks superb - full of medieval towers, cobbled streets etc. Nice cool sea breeze here too. There's a lot of renovation going on in all three and frankly a lot more needed, but I [View Full Entry]

Upon discovering that Tallinn, which hosts one of the best preserved "Old Town" sectors in northern Europe, was only a five hour bus ride from Rīga, I decided to pay Estonia's capital city a visit... Tuesday 29 May Upon arrival in Tallinn I was thrilled to find that its Old Town did indeed lived up to its reputation... I got off the bus and walked through the tower gates into Old Town to find my hostel. It wasn't that easy... true to its medieval layout, the centre has a numerous amount of narrow cobbled streets leading every which-way, complete with [View Full Entry]

Today our tour started in the medieval town of Tallinn. We walk up tooompea hill to the palace square where we viewed Toompa castle, now the Estonian Parliament. We were able to peek into a lovely Russian Orthodox Alexander Nevsky cathedral. Since this was sunday, no pictures were allowed but the clergy were all dressed in their religious robes, very ornate. We continued over the cobble stone streets for an overview of the lower city. The city is on a hill with city walls protecting the lower city and larger walls protecting the upper city. There is a Catholic St [View Full Entry]

Beware the Müürivahe Molester In keeping with my strange ability to attract unconventional situations, Tallinn served me up a beauty of an incident. It was my last day there and I was doing one last wander around Old Town just before midday. Walking down Müürivahe (yet another quiet cobbled street), an innocent, blond-haired blue-eyed adolescent was coming in the opposite direction. He gave me a shy little smile and in return, as Kiwis generally do, I smiled back. Naturally, the nordic youth took this to mean; "please, feel free to fondle me" and proceeded to give my left mammary [View Full Entry]

I was pretty stressed out the morning of the 30th. I had my final exam for one of the harder Engineering units i'd been doing and the lecturer conviently decided to change the course requirements to create a final oral exam. I was soon to find, however, that the stress was undeserved - the lecturer simply held an extended conversation with me about me thoughts and learning from the course (a course might i add in which I attended 10% of lectures due to unforseen circumstances - like Amsterdam). Anyways, relieved to claim some unit points and have the rare [View Full Entry]
