Estonia Travel Blogs

The most northerly of the chilly Baltics, member of Nato since April 2004 and the European Union since May 2004 Estonia is making great strides with rediscovering their culture and revelling in their newly acquired relative wealth.

Estonian society is however tainted with the aftermath of Soviet occupation with ethnic tension and the ex Soviet style womens liberation making Estonias women reluctant to pursue more rights.

Being sparsly populated, Estonia has wide expanses of forest and lakes.

Visit Estonia and stay warm in one of medieval Tallinns candlelit cellars with the delicious Estonian speciality hot chocolate and truffles or take an Estonian style weekend get away to the Islands of Saaremaa and Hiiumaa on any day of the week.

A NIGHT ON THE SQUARE-PART 2
A NIGHT ON THE SQUARE-PART 2
ITS ELYSEE'S TURN AS BRITS CELEBRATE THIER MATES MARRIAGE TO BE.
I was doing just fine, surrounded by a bevy of Estonian beauties. The remainder of this story is also excerpted from my book Our Summer in Estonia. "All was going great for me, when my competition arrived. A group of Brits, who, believe it or not, were also on the town showing one of their mates a good time, because he too was soon to be married. Of course this was great for Elysee. Fair play, so to speak." The odds of our meeting separate male and female groupS, within minutes of each other, each out for a night of carousing [View Full Entry]

TOWN SQUARE AT NIGHT
TOWN SQUARE AT NIGHT
I'M IN ESTONIAN HEAVEN. THE LADY IN THE RED HAIR IS THE BRIDE TO BE.
I would certainly advise any young person visitng Tallinn to wander into the Old Town Square for night of revelry. Elysee and I were returnig to our apartment from dinner at Controvento, a five minute stroll on a mild summer's night. What transpired next is excerpted from my book."I looked ahead along the lane and saw, moving towards me, a stunning, drop-dead-in-your-tracks sight. Wisecraking outload, I said, 'I must have died and gone to Estonia heaven.' This is better than a muslim martyr with his seven virgins. Headed for the square, and thus straight for me, I was suddenly surrounded by a [View Full Entry]

Matka joutuikin oikein hyvin. Riikasta Tallinnaan on kuitenkin yllättävän pitkä matka, 330km! VW Polon mittariin [View Full Entry]

Bored. Finally. Europe » Estonia » Tartu
It seems like it would never come yet here it is. Full and total boredem. And let me tell you, the Olympics were never so much fun to watch. Do it at home and it's not NEARLY as much fun as it is in another country. American music seems to be what everybody in Estonia listens to and a bit of German. Can't really remember their names, yet it is good stuff. OH! I play soccer in the back yard with the best player in the world- my host dog named Rex. She goes after apples so I threw it on [View Full Entry]

So, our last day in St. Petersburg was a lot of fun. We took the bus out to Peterhof, a palace surrounded by a beautiful park that is filled with fabulous fountains that rival Versailles. We spend a few hours just walking around and enjoying the scenery. It was nice to notice that there were more Russina tourists than foreigners. After Peterhof. we made our way back to the city center and went on a canal tour that took us down the Neva River and gave us a nice perspective of all of the major buildings in St. Petersburg. We realized, [View Full Entry]

The Gate to Tallinn
An outdoor cafe
Asaf in Old Town

I thought I would try to wait until I had something to talk about- much like a story yet nothing has really come to mind and I know that I have become a somewhat newspaper article-ist\journalis by starting my blog. So here is to all my dedicated fans!!! It is different here. Very different than say, most of New Mexico and most of Arizona... which most of my readers are from. It is so rainy and I freakin love it! Also, I live in the middle of the country side which is also not very different from most of Estonia. My [View Full Entry]

Worlds Tallest Building?
Worlds Tallest Building?
St. Olav's in Tallinn built 1267
Amazing as it seems for little Estonia St. Olav's church is reputed to have been the world's tallest building at the time of its construction in 1267. It is 140m (460ft) high. It was built by Scandinavian merchants as an orientation point for seaman and named after the Norwegian King Olaf Haraldson. You can still today climb to the top for a magnificent view over the harbor and down into the Town Square. Are their other claims for tallest building at the time? Kuressaare->Parnu Europe » Estonia » Parnu
A super early start - why schedule a popular bus route at 7.45 am? We were somewhat taken aback to discover we would be travelling to Estonias most popular seaside resort by minibus, rather than the spacious coach which had brought us to Kuressare, but it was nice and air conditioned. The journey went quite quickly, and we arrived in Parnu with plenty of time to kill before our evening bus to Riga. Parnu is estonias equivalent of blackpool or bournemouth or somewhere, except its really very nice. We left our bags in the (very small) luggage hold and tottered round [View Full Entry]

Stark Contrast of Old and New Tallinn
Stark Contrast of Old and New Tallinn
New office tower looms over Our Lady of Kazan Orthodox Church 1721
I have selected the photograph in this entry because it so captures the contrast between the old and new Estonia. In the background is the construction of a 32 story bank tower and in the foreground is the Russian Orthodox church Our Lady of Kazan, built in 1721 and the oldest wooden structure in Tallinn. Estonia is doing a good job of modernizing, while being aware of its world heritage architecture and cultural ambiance dating back to the 13OOs. This change is also reflected in the people, a dynamic people, totally engaged in the modern world, in some cases advancing beyond [View Full Entry]
