Day 9 I had an early start to get the Lux express bus to Tallinn, The journey took around 7 hours and the buses were very posh with reclining seats and on the TV they had British pop hits from the eighties. So I was entertained with Paul Young, Wham, Limahl, Genesis and a whole host of unforgettable stars from the eighties:-) The bus pitched up at the station and I had to catch a tram to get to the Hostel, but couldnt work out how to pay so I ended up breaking my first law in Estonia by fare dodging. I have now worked out where you pay so I will be being a good boy in future. I was back in an Irish Bar (Molly Malones)that night and got chatting to some Geordie blokes ... read more

We took the night ferry from Helsinki to Tallinn at 9pm, although there was still light - summer in Northern Europe! By the time we arrived it was dark in Tallinn. Lit lamps on cobble stoned streets in the old town gave the place an ancient yet romantic atmosphere. Walking around Tallinn old town during the day, it is truly as I imagined, colourful and fairyland like with its church spires and onion domes, red roofs, yellow and pink walls, yet fully retaining the old town feel with grey and thick stone and masonry walls and towers. There’s a free 2 hour old town walking tour at midday outside the tourist info centre. Uni students put together this service, they also have paid bike tours and pub crawls. It was very interesting to learn the stories ... read more

... read more

From the Riga main bus station next to the central market I took the next departing bus to Talinn, Eurolines bus cost me roughly 8 dibdobs, about $14. It was gloomy when we left Riga and got worse, it rained through the trip, we stopped at some picturesque town somewhere for 5 minutes, I did not catch the name, actually I did not know when we crossed into Estonia as there were no checkpoints. It was past 2pm when we arrived in Talinn, took about 4 1/2 hours. I left the bus terminal and followed other tourists across the street and somehow found the tram line only I got on the wrong train, it was going the opposite way, a kind woman who spoke only Russian told me to get off the train and go the ... read more

Visiting Estonia was never on the itinerary for this trip to Europe, but when our plans changed due to unforeseeable events, I suddenly found myself on a boat heading east from Stockholm across the Baltic Sea. The infamous 40 hour cruises run from Stockholm to Helsinki (Finland), Tallinn (Estonia) or Riga (Latvia) and are known as sleazy, yet quite popular, party boats to Swedes and their Baltic neighbors alike. While this was not my particular interest, ample time in the Stockholm area and a last minute booking bargain made it too irresistible to pass up on my first ever cruise ship experience, however sleazy, and an unexpected day in a Baltic capital. Tallinn being the only option available on the day I wanted to set sail made the decision easy... I was on my way to ... read more

Another early morning and it is really starting to grind on the old CF scale, especially when we could have slept in. Alex decided that 4.30am was a totally acceptable time to get up, however Jo and I did not see eye to eye with him, especially as we had a long day visiting the old city of Tallinn on the cards. By 9am he was still full of beans so we decided the hour walk to the port to catch the ferry was in order. With not far to go we got hit by a fairly large shower of rain with no protection anywhere near us. Unfortunately as it was peak hour the numerous taxis that went past were already full. The kids took it with good hunour at we made it to the ferry ... read more

Well, I did a walking tour today… kind of? Haha. When I got to the info tent for the free-tour there was no one else there (other than the guide). I didn’t particularly feel like having a one-on-one tour… so I decided to take things into my own hands and just walk around. I really do love their Old Town - you feel like you’re in a fairytale walking around. (Minus the kajillion souvenir shops, of course). There are all these towers, the cobblestone streets, the narrow alleyways - it’s all great. I climbed up the little hill which is surrounded by and old wall which still has its guard towers and such. Very cool. The main tower, Kiek in de Kok was quite the site (and name...) - built back in the late 1400’s, it’s ... read more

Right, well I’m going to lump the past two days together - it’s been so hot I’ve done practically nothing haha. I have, however, enjoyed waking up nice and late. Ah, ear plugs - how I love thee. My room’s a decent temperature - like I said, I’m in the shade of the courtyard, so that definitely helps. Unfortunately, as soon as I left my room yesterday I was like ‘oh crap - hot - I’m not doing anything today’ haha. I suffered through 3 days of walking around and doing stuff in 40 degree weather, I deserve my break. I lounged around my room for a bit - did some writing in my journal, talked to people back home, al that good stuff. I then headed out to the mall for some much desired A/C. ... read more

Right, well I went on a tour - just not the one I thought I was going to do haha. We went to Lahemaa National Park instead of Paldaski… which is fine, except Lahemaa is what I planned to do on Thursday before catching my overnight bus to Vilnius… ah well, I’ll figure something out. Back to the tour, we left around 11am - it was a nice bunch. There was a Lithuanian family (4-yr old girl, 6-yr old boy, parents and grandmother) and a Polish family (mom, teenager daughter, 10-yr old boy). Only the Lithuanian Dad, and the Polish Mom and girl spoke English - I spent most of my time with the girl, she was happy to practice her English and I was happy to oblige. We took the infamous blue hippy minivan haha, ... read more
