It’s Thursday and I’m happy. It’s Thursday and I’m wondering if I’ll ever want to go home. It’s Thursday, and I’m lost in fairy tales. I spent today hunting down books with Ns. I spent yesterday wandering through the national art museum, eating falafel, and wearing my hood up. Also bought a ticket to Stockholm with C. It’s Thursday and I’m happy. I spent last night wandering the city into the wee hours of the morning. A man with beautiful words. I haven’t even been here 2 weeks. I’m not sure if that makes this crazy or even better. Gliding through the freezing costal air. Our hands are numb and you’re glad I came to Denmark. I feel so alive biking with you in the early morning darkness.... read more

I arrived in Copenhagen On January 9th. I was two days late to my 3-week pre-semester intensive intro to Danish course. In Denmark, the sun appears about one hour a day during the month of January. It rained for my first three weeks. I was terribly lost in my Danish course. I couldn't eat or sleep. But after week one was over, the exhaustion faded and the fun and excitement took over. Also, I met some fabulous friends during my Danish course. So I experienced a bit of culture shock at first and decided to write about it... Cultural Conversions When I arrived the verbiages and rhythms of voices were incomparable to any common sound. Not a single recognizable set of eyes, lips or arms was there to introduce me to the sunless weather. The first ... read more

This week was the first real week of classes. I like all of them very much and they seem really interesting to me. In human health and disease (HHD), we began learning how to take a patients history, the questions to ask about different aching body parts and when to ask them, and so on. Though I have shadowed my uncle before, who is a cardiologist, this was my first time actually being told the formality of the whole thing. I was fascinated by it all, and it definitely served to reinforce my future career plans. All the people in the class have some background knowledge with the topics, but I feel Wofford prepared me very well as I knew quite a bit of what we talked about and about what we are going to talk ... read more

Went on a tour of the Carlsberg brewery today (on a Sunday afternoon of course). Carlsberg is THE beer here. Ns taught me how to count to 10, here goes… 1: en (sounds like: een) 2: to (two) 3: tre (sort of like tray, but not quite…err…) 4: fire (feah) 5: fem (fip) 6: seks (six) 7: syb (sou as in soup) 8: otte (oahdah) 9: ni (nee) 10: ti (tee) And then after I try to imitate, “rigtig godt”, which means very good. I can remember 4 and 8 pretty well because they sound like a Boston accent to me. So like fire is a Bostonian’s fear. Shared the ol’ “pahk the cah” bit with F, and am now banished from the country for belittling the Dansk language. Bunch of Americans watching the Superbowl tonight, ... read more

Another marvelous night in Copenhagen. Went to check out the political science “Friday Bar”; each department has its own bar on Fridays, which is a novel and amusing concept to the American students, given how much universities at home try to keep us from drinking. It ended up being closed, so I called Ns, who came and met us, and we took a cab back to his friends’ place. Got a look at how “real” Danes enjoy a Friday night. You’re standard “pre-gaming” in someone’s apartment (complete with The Killers playing in the background), and then out to the kind of bar I wouldn’t go in by myself. They were a really great bunch, and we learned a Danish drinking game involving lying and dice, a pretty standard combination. Apparently beer-pong is unheard of here. But ... read more

Geo: 55.6763, 12.5681Think I did the 25th thing on the Rough Guides 25 things to do in Copenhagen by going to Fredriskberg Have (Gardens) on Sunday afternoon, another royal park but very nice and we spent about 4 hours walking and ended it with a few beers in a danish skanger bar (possibly) on Vesterfælledvej and nice slap up Indian, spent Saturday shopping for last danish house things we may desire and of course caught a Liverpool game in The Dubliner, so a real tourist kind of weekend. And I even went see to cinema to "Last King of Scotland" this week with our Irish 'Danish resident' friends aka our only 'Danish' friends. Only 8 weeks left....... read more

Circle dance was decent after all; more so the food and drink than the orientation program. Maybe because eating is so primal, universal…? A veritable UN of diners. Political scientists…and a smaller minority of theorists. Philosophers. Fools. Anyway, The Happy Pig (translation to come) is now a new favorite spot…as is Ns’ company. Hopefully the pinky-swear to teach me Danish carries as much weight here as it does in the States (THE States?). Transgression of the time-honored schoolyard tradition: unspeakable crime. Not sure if I should be writing now…a little buzzed. Things always seem to look worse in the morning than in this happy state. Utopia. No place. JP swears by writing, drawing, etc. drunk (et. al.)…maybe there’s something to be said for it? I did manage to navigate the S-trains pretty well even in this ... read more

... read more

So, I have left Wiesbaden, Germany, a place I found immediately inviting and wonderful. I grew more comfortable with Jan, Celina, and Renate each day, and the immediate bond of family still amazes me. It truly places a value on discovering and getting in touch with ones past. I am currently in Copenhagen, Denmark. This is my first visit to the country and, upon arrival, I knew no one. The students at DIS are mostly outgoing. Sometimes, however, it feels as though it’s some bragging contest when everyone meets. Say their school, if it’s an Ivy league- no need to say more, if it’s not, define that it’s still good. The Danish are humble people so my defining myself in more than necessary descriptions is considered rude, and I can see why. At first, I was ... read more

Geo: 55.6763, 12.5681Well I think we managed to make the most of our latest visitors 20 and 21 TnA's 48 hours - in terms of hanging out together & letting them see the place a bit - they flew into Malmo & arrived in Cph around 4:30pm Thurs so C met them & I was home about 6 & then we went to Spiseloppen in Christiana for dinner at 8 as I thought it'd be their scene (& they loved it) & then woodstock bar and then a few beers at home but the girls retired early enough (well I had a 9am meeting to get up for), then Fri they had a nice lie in and I met the 3 of them in town at 2.15 for brunch & then we did our big walking ... read more
