We tenderly disembarked the Emerald at 8am and wove our way through Copenhagen via taxi, metro and bus to Tine’s neighborhood, which we quickly decided was a most livable section of the city due to its close proximity to two kebab joints, a grocery store, the bus stop and the University. Tine, a first year nursing student, welcomed us to CPH, helped us pick out what sites we should check out, planned out what we will do at night and gave us the keys to two bicycles, the preferred transportation in the city. Being a pedestrian in CPH is strange, everyone rides bikes; they ride in the rain, in shirts, in heels, there is no excuse. My kind of city.
We spent the day sightseeing, half the day looking for the damn Little Mermaid, Le Havre Frue, then stumbled into a nice canal lined with cafes. Next we checked out Christiana, the inner island with the hippie commune settlement and ate smorgasbord at a little underground restaurant while it poured outside. I ordered an assortment of pickled herring while Jenn opted for salmon but it all looked lovely. We waited the rain out and then returned to where we parked
our bikes, trekked back to Tine’s, and took an hour-long nap. We were woken up by Tine’s roommate, Diantha, who was probably wondering what two random girls were doing sleeping on her couches (just kidding, she knew we were coming). After freshening up, we ate kebabs (!) and headed over to the University bar to meet Tine and her friends for beers. It was nice to get a local experience and chat with students (Danish students get 7 years to study on the government’s expense).
Next, we bussed over to the red light district of CPH to go to Distortion, a set of outdoor parties/concerts full of all sorts of the eccentric people I strive to surround myself with. After buying one too many beers, Jenn and I scourged the streets of Copenhagen at 1AM looking for extra kroners to afford a bus ride home. I still had to weedle the bus driver into letting us in because we were 25 kroners short. More kebabs followed before bed…a two-hour power nap before we set off to the airport at 4AM. At the airport, Jenn and I sadly went our separate ways: Jenn headed back to the states via Paris,
while I set off for Krakow, seeking another two months of fresh adventures.
