Following the First World War, the closely related Czechs and Slovaks of the former Austro-Hungarian Empire merged to form Czechoslovakia. During the interwar years, the new country's leaders were frequently preoccupied with meeting the demands of other ethnic minorities within the republic, most notably the Sudeten Germans and the Ruthenians (Ukrainians). After World War II, a truncated Czechoslovakia fell within the Soviet sphere of influence. In 1968, an invasion by Warsaw Pact troops ended the efforts of the country's leaders to liberalize Communist party rule and create "socialism with a human face." Anti-Soviet demonstrations the following year ushered in a period of harsh repression. With the collapse of Soviet authority in 1989, Czechoslovakia regained its freedom through a peaceful "Velvet Revolution." On 1 January 1993, the country underwent a "velvet divorce" into its two national components, the Czech Republic and Slovakia. The Czech Republic joined NATO in 1999 and the European Union in 2004. Johnny Walker Black for $2?
Johnny Walker Black for $2?
It's true! In Prague, the comforts are cheap and the architecture is elegant.
I'm on a train from Salzburg to Prague. Why not check out Prague while we're so close? We woke up and caught the train at the very civilized hour of 11:30am. It's sad to leave Austria - the mountains are capped with snow and everything looks so neat and tidy. The buildings all look like slices of wedding cake stacked next to each other. We had the most relaxed time, buying train tickets and meeting a nice older American couple on a clean, cushy train with big blue seats. We changed trains at the border of the Czech Republic where we [View Full Entry]

First real trip Europe » Czech Republic » Prague
In September 2000 after completing my 6 month work placement with AIB I had saved a little money so Lisa and I went to Prague for a bit of a holiday. It was my first trip abroad, well apart from England which I don't think counts! We spent five days in Praha as it is known locally, and were truly impressed by its beauty. For a student budget it was a great place to visit. There was lots to see. We also took a trip to Terezin, previously the site of a NAZI concentration camp where trains stopped off before their [View Full Entry]

This is the Cathederal from behind - Retro Style
Well this weekend was quite "eye-opening" in more ways than one. Not only did I explore as much of the vast city as possible, I also got quite a dose of the nightlife Prague has to offer. The city is amazingly intricate. Every house, molding, and statue is so detailed that it is an overload of eye candy. The vast old town section of Prague is for the most part clean for how many people there are. The only eye sore is the graffiti that occasionally ruins the feel of the city. We traveled to Prague Castle where we went throughout [View Full Entry]

Can’t remember the real names of the two American guys on tour in Europe. Bill and Ted maybe. Or Jay and Silent Bob. Or Batman and Robin. Doesn’t really matter. Bill and Ted have come to symbolize the essence of budget travel. Backpacking Europe 101. They liked Amsterdam, they like to party “if I know what they mean”. I know what they mean. They would also like to go to Sweden “to chill” for a few days. But now we’re all in Prague. After a day of sightseeing we end up temporary roommates at the nice little hostel. Basically because there [View Full Entry]

They work in pairs, they are big, and it’s their home court. In other words, no way of screwing them. They hit down on tourists with large backpacks, exiting the Prague subway. Prague is a very nice city. Lots of things to see, lots of things to do. Most locals are very nice. With European standards it’s a cheap city to visit. Still, most people choose not to pay the streetcars, buses, or the subway. The tourists take after the locals and neglect this basic detail as well. That is when the two big guys get you. Just when you think [View Full Entry]
