Following the First World War, the closely related Czechs and Slovaks of the former Austro-Hungarian Empire merged to form Czechoslovakia. During the interwar years, the new country's leaders were frequently preoccupied with meeting the demands of other ethnic minorities within the republic, most notably the Sudeten Germans and the Ruthenians (Ukrainians). After World War II, a truncated Czechoslovakia fell within the Soviet sphere of influence. In 1968, an invasion by Warsaw Pact troops ended the efforts of the country's leaders to liberalize Communist party rule and create "socialism with a human face." Anti-Soviet demonstrations the following year ushered in a period of harsh repression. With the collapse of Soviet authority in 1989, Czechoslovakia regained its freedom through a peaceful "Velvet Revolution." On 1 January 1993, the country underwent a "velvet divorce" into its two national components, the Czech Republic and Slovakia. The Czech Republic joined NATO in 1999 and the European Union in 2004. A Visit with Ian Europe » Czech Republic » Prague
Hello all my peeps, So last week was my 'reading week' in the English Department here at the grand ol' University of York, which basically means we had no class and were supposed to get ahead on reading. Which I did, but I decided not to sit around and do it in York, as is my usual routine. Instead, I took a quick trip up to Edinburgh to spend Valentines Day with Mia and her dad who was visiting from the States (pics of that to come...), and then I hopped a flight over to Prague to spend a few days [View Full Entry]

Nancy and I worked in the library this morning and then took the rest of the day off. About three this afternoon Harold, Nancy and I went downtown to see what we could see, eat our evening meal and go to see the opera Carmen at the State Opera House. This is the same theater where Nancy and I saw Turandot several weeks ago. Harold took us to see a church he likes named Our Lady of the Snow. I don’t know the story behind the name of the church and our guidebook makes no mention of it. The church was [View Full Entry]

(Friday a.m. note) Can you believe that Olivia left home a little after 8 and her son was born by 11? Now that is a very fast delivery! At breakfast this morning she and the baby were the topic of much happy discussion. It seems everyone was praying for a fast and safe delivery. Good news like this makes everyone so happy. This afternoon Johanna came into the library. “I have two tickets to for the premier of a new ballet tonight that I can’t use. Can you use them, or do you have to work until eight tonight?” We [View Full Entry]

One of the men on the work team from Wheaton, Illinois asked Nancy and me if the library has any materials on Baptist work in Denmark. One of his great uncles was part of the original group of people responsible for the founding of the Danish Baptist Association. His grandfather was a missionary/pastor to Danish immigrants to the midwestern part of the United States. He wanted to see if there is any information concerning the world of his great uncle. Both of us told him we didn’t know, but would find out for him. Nancy and I did check and found [View Full Entry]

More snow Europe » Czech Republic » Prague
I have learned that we can blame the Russians for the cold air we are having and the Italians for the moisture that is falling as snow. Cold air has streamed into Central Europe the last few days from Russia and a low pressure system is pumping moist air up from the south. The result, the two air masses are colliding over Central Europe and the moisture is falling as snow. And today, indeed, it did snow and snow and snow. The weatherman says colder air is headed this way and the lows for the rest of the week will be [View Full Entry]

We ate breakfast with the men who arrived Friday evening. There actually turn out to be 7 of them. Two must have slept later than we did yesterday. One is from California. Today they will start the project of raising the floor in the registration/security building eight inches. The primary reason for raising the floor is so the workers in registration will be able to see people approach the building. As it is now, when they are seated working on the computer they cannot see the area near the building. The road leading to the seminary drops away quickly from the [View Full Entry]

At breakfast this morning there were 5 young men obviously good friends eating together. They flew in last evening from Chicago and will stay all week to build a new floor in the reception area. Neither of us can imagine what that means. The reception area looks very complete to us now. So it will be interesting to see the change and what it accomplishes and how it adds to the area. They said it was partly for security purposes. So, we will watch with interest. They were all quite awake but their bodies were still on Chicago time. I heard [View Full Entry]

We have been here for a month. So, one month of the 5 and 3/4’s that we are staying has already passed. We have certainly experienced a lot. We have done a lot of work. We have made some good new friends and we hope to make a lot more. It has been fun. The day is dawning without any snow falling. Odd... The sun was shining into the cafeteria. We get to eat undisturbed very often in the morning. Not that others disturb us, we enjoy eating and talking, but there is NO one in the cafeteria when we get [View Full Entry]

Every Wednesday evening at six a seminary van makes a grocery store run. Anyone at the seminary can hitch a ride. I and 7 others went to the grocery store this evening. It is the same store I talked about in earlier posts. I had a fairly long list and found everything except peanut butter and brown rice. I was a bit surprised at how many shoppers were in the store on a Wednesday evening. The place was quite crowded. “You didn’t look low enough,” Cheryl said, “the peanut butter is stuck on the very bottom shelf, below the jelly.” [View Full Entry]

This evening there was a Valentine party for everyone here at the seminary. For the last weeks people have opened their door to find a small package lying on the floor, or a note, a postcard, or a short letter taped to their door ... or ... someone has knocked on the door and when it is opened have handed a present or card saying, “This is from your secret neighbor.” Everyone was given a secret neighbor to whom to give small presents and/or encouraging messages. It was lots of fun. At the Valentine party each person was introduced to their [View Full Entry]
