Following the First World War, the closely related Czechs and Slovaks of the former Austro-Hungarian Empire merged to form Czechoslovakia. During the interwar years, the new country's leaders were frequently preoccupied with meeting the demands of other ethnic minorities within the republic, most notably the Sudeten Germans and the Ruthenians (Ukrainians). After World War II, a truncated Czechoslovakia fell within the Soviet sphere of influence. In 1968, an invasion by Warsaw Pact troops ended the efforts of the country's leaders to liberalize Communist party rule and create "socialism with a human face." Anti-Soviet demonstrations the following year ushered in a period of harsh repression. With the collapse of Soviet authority in 1989, Czechoslovakia regained its freedom through a peaceful "Velvet Revolution." On 1 January 1993, the country underwent a "velvet divorce" into its two national components, the Czech Republic and Slovakia. The Czech Republic joined NATO in 1999 and the European Union in 2004. Spring is springing in the Sarka Valley. After supper we took a walk up the valley. Plants and leaves are exploding everywhere. I really like the delicate greens of spring. They are here for such a short time. I was somewhat surprised to see the marsh grass does not know it is spring yet. There is no green showing in the marsh grass that covers the wet land at our end of the valley. Now if the mosquitoes and ticks do not discover it is spring I would be happy. There are deer in the valley. In fact there are deer [View Full Entry]

Never say never. Last June when we left Cesky Krumlov and a few days later when we left Prague we said that we would love to visit these towns again, but that it probably would never happen. Little did we know, nor could we have guessed that seven months later we would be living in Prague for half a year and that we would have the opportunity to visit Cesky Krumlov again. Cesky Krumlov is a small Bohemian town in the southern part of the Czech Republic. It is practically unchanged from medieval days. This, at least for Nancy and I, [View Full Entry]

So this entry is sort of a grab-bag of stories from the last two weeks. It turns out that internet access in Europe isn't quite as cheap as in other places of the world. I am currently sitting in a cafe, using Pugner's laptop with a wireless connection. Technology is nice sometimes. Doctor Dinner in Istanbul So how do you freel about the whole pharamacutical industry bribing doctors with gifts and expensive dinners and what not, in hopes of the doctors perscribing more of their drugs? Pretty sleezy, eh? Totally opposed? Me too. Until. Always an until. The world [View Full Entry]

Today was an absolutely beautiful Prague spring day. We washed some clothes and then headed down town with no set plans. I wanted to take a picture of the statue that is called “The Disappearing Man”. It is a memorial to all those who were imprisoned, persecuted or killed by the Communists during the era of their ruling Czechoslovakia. A few years after the Velvet Revolution, when the Communists were throw out of power the Czechs and Slovaks agreed to separate the two countries. The Czechs call this the Velvet Divorce. On the tram going down town I realized that the [View Full Entry]

Entries on our Krakow trip are being entered after March 30th. Click on previous entry to read about the event filled trip from Prague to Krakow and back. We made it back safely, but it was a wild adventure, especially getting to Krakow. We will tell you all about it in future as we have time to write. We arrived by train, that's right by train, not by car, this morning at 7:30. The car is still in Krakow, but it needed lots of help in getting there. [View Full Entry]

Living in a dorm In Eastern Europe the cheapest option is to stay in a dormitory. Thus, we stayed mainly in dormitories. Besides saving money, dorming can have other advantages (and disadvantages of which there should be no mention here). For example you can broaden your horizon by meeting an awful lot of strange and funny contemporaries. Prague seems to have an extraordinary attraction for not quite ordinary tourists (apart from an even more extraordinary almost magnetical attraction for tourists in general which subsequently leads to daily congestions on Charles Bridge). There wa [View Full Entry]

There was an expression where we grew up that “God looks after fools, drunks, and little children.” After today I believe we should add “and travelers.” We got up at our normal time and ate breakfast at seven. Kasha ate with us and we agreed that we would meet her outside our building at eight, load our luggage, which consisted of one backpack, and off we would drive to Krakow. Leaving at eight meant we should arrive in Krakow not later than four in the afternoon. Traffic in the Prague area was terrible. We crept along at about ten kilometers an [View Full Entry]

Airplane landing at Brno

This will be our last post for a week or so. Tomorrow we ride with Kasha to Krakow. We doubt that we will be able or have time to add to this travelblog until we return. We will arrive here in Prague in the wee hours of the morning on Wednesday, May 30th. This evening when I left the library I saw a beautiful sight, the moon was rising over Building A, The Castle, in a cloudless, unbelievably blue sky. The snow is gone in our area and melting all over the Czech Republic. Unfortunately there is flooding in a number of areas as rivers are rising to flood stage. I hope there is not a repeat of three years ago when Prague was flooded, the subway closed and the city separated by the river. I wonder how many gallons of water were pumped out of the subway system. It must have been millions [View Full Entry]
