Following the First World War, the closely related Czechs and Slovaks of the former Austro-Hungarian Empire merged to form Czechoslovakia. During the interwar years, the new country's leaders were frequently preoccupied with meeting the demands of other ethnic minorities within the republic, most notably the Sudeten Germans and the Ruthenians (Ukrainians). After World War II, a truncated Czechoslovakia fell within the Soviet sphere of influence. In 1968, an invasion by Warsaw Pact troops ended the efforts of the country's leaders to liberalize Communist party rule and create "socialism with a human face." Anti-Soviet demonstrations the following year ushered in a period of harsh repression. With the collapse of Soviet authority in 1989, Czechoslovakia regained its freedom through a peaceful "Velvet Revolution." On 1 January 1993, the country underwent a "velvet divorce" into its two national components, the Czech Republic and Slovakia. The Czech Republic joined NATO in 1999 and the European Union in 2004. We got off the subway at the Malastranka station. Coming out of the station we decided to walk through an area we had not visited before. The street was lined with businesses and restaurants, but not many people many people were walking there. We came to a wall and walked along it. [Nancy-I saw a large sign saying WC and indicating that the door into the wall was a path to a 'comfort station'. Since I like to know the location of each of these in any city where I am apt to be wandering the streets, I decided to go [View Full Entry]

We left Vojan Park and walked past the western end of the Charles Bridge and then through the neighborhood beside Certovka, the Devil’s Canal. Legend has it that the name dates back to Medieval days when a very ill tempered woman lived by this small off-shoot of the Vltava river. The Devil’s Canal is the western boundary of Kampa Island. In times past it was used as a mill race and at least one old water wheel is still there. We crossed one of the walkers bridges onto Kampa Island. This is where the Prague marathon ended two weeks ago. Walking [View Full Entry]

The walk up the east side of the hill in Pekrin Park is a long walk. There are places where the path is very steep, but there are interesting places along the way. On top of the hill are an observatory, a mirror maze, concessions shops, food shops, gardens, part of the old wall and other interesting places. [View Full Entry]

Bach’s Requiem The Church of St. Nicholas sits in the middle of the Little Quarter. With its large dome it is quite a landmark. Construction on St. Nicholas began in 1703 and the finishing touches were made in 1769. As we walked past we saw that Bach’s Requiem was scheduled to be performed at 7:00 this evening. “Do you want to go?” Nancy asked. “Why not?” I replied. We walked up the steps and bought two tickets. It was 6:00 at that time and we had not eaten our evening meal yet. [Nancy-Bill had given me the money and I bought [View Full Entry]

Jason is two today. He is the much beloved son of two of the people we live with in the dorm here. His dad is studying here and his mom is doing the 1,000 things any mom does plus helping ever so much to make the music in our worship and chapel services marvelous. This family shares their two boys with all of us which is wonderful since most of us are far away from children, grandchildren, younger brothers and sisters, etc. The whole community smiles when they see Jason. He is learning to talk but he has no trouble communicating [View Full Entry]

Brandon, one of the really neat kids here. He has a little brother named Jason. He came running up to me the other day, pulled down his lower lip and said, "I have a loose tooth." Then off he ran to show others. Yesterday as Nancy and I were walking up the 48 infamous steps to our building he came running down the steps. As he approached us he yelled, "Watch out! BEEP! BEEP! Brandon is a friendly, extroverted child who loves to talk to everyone ... even we adults. [View Full Entry]

Prague had the most beautiful architecture we've seen. The whole city was gothic and mysterious looking. We spent hours in the old section of the town and the Jewish quarter just looking at random buildings. We can't figure out the name of our favorite building but check out the picture and anyone who has been to Prague feel free to tell us! We also visited the Prague Castle and took a walking tour which was supposed to last for one hour but we had a very enthusiastic new guide so it ended up being closer to two hours! Our favorite part [View Full Entry]

Spring is springing in the Sarka Valley. After supper we took a walk up the valley. Plants and leaves are exploding everywhere. I really like the delicate greens of spring. They are here for such a short time. I was somewhat surprised to see the marsh grass does not know it is spring yet. There is no green showing in the marsh grass that covers the wet land at our end of the valley. Now if the mosquitoes and ticks do not discover it is spring I would be happy. There are deer in the valley. In fact there are deer [View Full Entry]

Never say never. Last June when we left Cesky Krumlov and a few days later when we left Prague we said that we would love to visit these towns again, but that it probably would never happen. Little did we know, nor could we have guessed that seven months later we would be living in Prague for half a year and that we would have the opportunity to visit Cesky Krumlov again. Cesky Krumlov is a small Bohemian town in the southern part of the Czech Republic. It is practically unchanged from medieval days. This, at least for Nancy and I, [View Full Entry]
