Following the First World War, the closely related Czechs and Slovaks of the former Austro-Hungarian Empire merged to form Czechoslovakia. During the interwar years, the new country's leaders were frequently preoccupied with meeting the demands of other ethnic minorities within the republic, most notably the Sudeten Germans and the Ruthenians (Ukrainians). After World War II, a truncated Czechoslovakia fell within the Soviet sphere of influence. In 1968, an invasion by Warsaw Pact troops ended the efforts of the country's leaders to liberalize Communist party rule and create "socialism with a human face." Anti-Soviet demonstrations the following year ushered in a period of harsh repression. With the collapse of Soviet authority in 1989, Czechoslovakia regained its freedom through a peaceful "Velvet Revolution." On 1 January 1993, the country underwent a "velvet divorce" into its two national components, the Czech Republic and Slovakia. The Czech Republic joined NATO in 1999 and the European Union in 2004. Day 4 The Jewish Quarter So today I went to the Jewish Quarter with a group of people from my program. First we searched for lunch, and I do mean searched, even with a map Prague is somewhat difficult to navigate on foot and its easy to get disoriented as the streets are normally very curvy, I really need to sit down with a map and enjoy some kava mleche (coffee with milk in Czech. We finally found Bohemian Bagel, this little place our tour guide had recommended for cheap quality food. There was an English menu, which my classmates loved, [View Full Entry]

It's only been a day and a half and I'm already feeling pretty much at home here. The flight over and journey to the flat were both fine, I arrived quite late in the evening and bloody starving, so took the opportunity to go and discover the local 24 hour shop, where I was attacked by some dog, twitching from god knows what someone had slipped in its food. The first czech I learned while here is that a viennese shortbread is known as a "třený bananek", which literally means "fricative banana" and made me lol. Yesterday, first and foremost I [View Full Entry]

Je me demande vraiment pourquoi certaine personnes voyagent. Par example, [View Full Entry]

I got pretty sick, I think because I haven’t slept as there is a bar located right underneath are room that parties and plays loud music until 5 AM morning, and I’m a really light sleeper. Yes, a bar in a dorm. F.Y.I. The Czech Republic has the highest beer consumption per capita in the world, about 40 L per person a year! Day 1 June 7, 2009 The Rose Woman Jet-lag. Luggage is safe. Met the most fascinating couple on the plane, a writer and a writer/cartoonist. They were both here for some kind of invitation-only writers’ conference that their agent sitting behind us described. The man (the cartoonist) just finished an animated copy of the Book of Genesis. The woman, who was fluent in French and constantly jabbing with the French stewardess, was a trip. Big tall pointy black boots, flaming red hair, diamond studded sunglasses, a purse covered with 3-dimensional red fabric roses [View Full Entry]

Well our dinner the other night was interesting. But probably the most interesting thing that happened was the club that we went out to afterwards. This club was out in the suburbs somewhat and was decorated in the most amazing manner (check out the photos). However the bad thing about the club was the fact that my camera got stolen. Right out of my handbag. I even saw the guy doing it. However I was just a second or two too slow to stop it from happening. It was amazing, the guy literally just bolted. However luckily for me I had [View Full Entry]
