Following the First World War, the closely related Czechs and Slovaks of the former Austro-Hungarian Empire merged to form Czechoslovakia. During the interwar years, the new country's leaders were frequently preoccupied with meeting the demands of other ethnic minorities within the republic, most notably the Sudeten Germans and the Ruthenians (Ukrainians). After World War II, a truncated Czechoslovakia fell within the Soviet sphere of influence. In 1968, an invasion by Warsaw Pact troops ended the efforts of the country's leaders to liberalize Communist party rule and create "socialism with a human face." Anti-Soviet demonstrations the following year ushered in a period of harsh repression. With the collapse of Soviet authority in 1989, Czechoslovakia regained its freedom through a peaceful "Velvet Revolution." On 1 January 1993, the country underwent a "velvet divorce" into its two national components, the Czech Republic and Slovakia. The Czech Republic joined NATO in 1999 and the European Union in 2004. prague is gorgeous. i had absolutely no idea what to expect but it is so beautiful. the buildings are very well kept, but medieval. the streets are very clean and cobble stoned. it's literally like a fairytale! i'm so glad i'm staying here for a week! gives me some time to really get to know the place. i went to kutna hora today. the bone church is there. it's amazing. a tad freaky but interesting. some guy in 1870 decided to decorate the church with human bones. there are chandeliers and everything. even his coat of arms on the wall - [View Full Entry]

Today was graduation day, a happy and a sad day. It was a happy day in that we were happy to see new friends receive their Certificate of Applied Theology, and others receive their Masters of Theology degrees. It was a sad day in that we know that the chance of seeing these wonderful young friends again is very slim. They will return to their home countries and begin their work or further education there and it is very unlikely that we will have the chance to meet them again. [View Full Entry]

The Peter and Paul Church sits high above the Vltava River and is one of our favorite churches in Prauge. None of the violent statues "adorn" the interior. In fact there are few statues in this church. Rather there are beautiful paintings and a beautiful ceiling. It was here that Princess Libuse pophesied that Prague would become a great city and it was here in the tenth century the first castle was built. During the passing centuries the castle and fort was destroyed and rebuilt a number of times. The entire complex of ruins and builds take up a good sized [View Full Entry]

Prague is always full of surprises and almost all of them happy surprises. Today as we walked around high above the city and Vltava River we saw this beautiful collection of red tile roofs. [View Full Entry]

To be honest, I’ve been trying very hard to sum up my five days in the Czech Republic for you in a somewhat concise way and having a terrible time of it - I think this one's just gonna be long. Lenka (Czech), Pavel (Czech) and Agne (Lithuanian) were my travel companions on the nearly eight hour trip to Brno on Thursday morning the 12th. Agne and I were invited by Pavel over the long Pentecost weekend to come to his home and see a bit of another side of Europe. I met nearly all of Pavel’s family, who are all [View Full Entry]

Today Nancy, Denitza, one of the CAT students from Bulgaria and I went to the Prague International Book Fair. Denitza was interested as her father is in the publishing business in Bulgaria. Nancy and I were simply interested in seeing the books and the library materials on display. Mirka had tickets and told us she would meet us at the ticket booth between 11:45 and 12:00 noon. The book fair was held in a beautiful exhibition building that was built for the 1891 exhabition. I have not researched it, but I expect it was something like a worlds fair. The building [View Full Entry]

The French would never starve here. I have never been anyplace where there are so many snails. These are not just little snails, these fellows and gals grow to be BIG snails. You gotta be careful on the sidewalks here and on the 48 infamous steps leading from the lower campus level to the upper level. If you don't watch suddenly you will hear a nasty crunching noise and there it is, sidewalk snail pizza. Yuck. Messy on the bottoms of your shoes also. However I must admit the snails are much more attractive than the slugs we have at home. [View Full Entry]

Snail everywhere

We passed a big milestone today entering the last book in English into the computer. Now the only books left are those that are in some language other than English. How many books have we entered into the system since we arrive way back in January? I have no idea other than it has been thousands. Did it feel good when the last key stroke was made? Surely you jest in asking that question. Now on to other tasks. [View Full Entry]
