Following the First World War, the closely related Czechs and Slovaks of the former Austro-Hungarian Empire merged to form Czechoslovakia. During the interwar years, the new country's leaders were frequently preoccupied with meeting the demands of other ethnic minorities within the republic, most notably the Sudeten Germans and the Ruthenians (Ukrainians). After World War II, a truncated Czechoslovakia fell within the Soviet sphere of influence. In 1968, an invasion by Warsaw Pact troops ended the efforts of the country's leaders to liberalize Communist party rule and create "socialism with a human face." Anti-Soviet demonstrations the following year ushered in a period of harsh repression. With the collapse of Soviet authority in 1989, Czechoslovakia regained its freedom through a peaceful "Velvet Revolution." On 1 January 1993, the country underwent a "velvet divorce" into its two national components, the Czech Republic and Slovakia. The Czech Republic joined NATO in 1999 and the European Union in 2004. Can you believe these pictures are all taken inside the Prague city limits? Is there any other city where I am within half a mile of a major street and yet feel as if I am standing in the Shenandoah National Park in Virginia? There may be another city with such a vista, but if there is I do not know where it is. Though there is a major street within half a mile of this spot the only sounds heard are the sounds of nature. The Sarka Valley can be seen snaking its way between the two mountains. It was [View Full Entry]

The Golden Lane
The Golden Lane
Pretend it is evening and you are walking along this lane. Can you imagine when this lane was filled with goldsmiths working for the King?
Would you like to live near the king? Would you like to be employed by the King? Would you like to have to keep the King, the Queen and other big wigs in the castle happy? There was a time, long ago, when everyone who lived on the Golden Lane lived there at the pleasure of the king. Later, the lane became a slum and one of the most dangerous places in the city. Interestingly Franz Kafka lived for several months with his sister in house #22. Jaroslav Seifert, the Nobel prize winning poet also lived on this street. The last [View Full Entry]

cesky krumlov

I had to take some clothes to the dry cleaners today. It is much too warm to wear wool now, even on the cool days. The dry cleaners is not far away, but does require a bus ride, one stop, and then either a two hundred walk, or a one stop tram ride. I only had to wait about two minutes for the bus. As I crossed the street at the tram stop a tram arrived, so I rode it to the next stop. A tram was just pulling up when I walked from the dry cleaners to the street, so [View Full Entry]

Who says librarians do not work? We are in the middle of the next big task, moving all the periodicals and putting them into a new arrangement. I could go into detail telling you how it was decided this move was necessary. I could bore you to death talking about call numbers, cutter numbers, alphabetical order, etc., but I won't. To make a long story short we are now ignoring the call and cutter numbers and moving all the magazines into alphabetical order. How many are there? I'm not sure, let's just say there are about 285 feet of shelving, filled [View Full Entry]

only arrived here this morning from prague - about 3 hours on the bus. cesky is a very cute little town with winding cobblestone streets and pretty buildings (of course) but the best thing is that it's encircled (nearly) in a river. it's really fun, coz it's got rapids and the hostel has inner tubes that you can use for free!! haven't done it yet, but it's on the list for tomorrow. we spent the day walking next to the river trying to find out where they hire rafts - we thought it would be upstream but the czechs do things [View Full Entry]

"It's too nice to stay here," Nancy said. We had just finished our work for the day in the library. "Let's eat and go downtown." "Where ?" I wanted to know. "I'm not sure," she replied. The day was quite warm and neither of us wanted to go where we would walk in the sun. I pulled out our guidebook and our Prague city map. Looking over the map I spotted Stelecky Island, a small island in the middle of the Valtava River accessible only by a set of steps from a bridge. "Let's go here," I said pointing to the [View Full Entry]
