Following the First World War, the closely related Czechs and Slovaks of the former Austro-Hungarian Empire merged to form Czechoslovakia. During the interwar years, the new country's leaders were frequently preoccupied with meeting the demands of other ethnic minorities within the republic, most notably the Sudeten Germans and the Ruthenians (Ukrainians). After World War II, a truncated Czechoslovakia fell within the Soviet sphere of influence. In 1968, an invasion by Warsaw Pact troops ended the efforts of the country's leaders to liberalize Communist party rule and create "socialism with a human face." Anti-Soviet demonstrations the following year ushered in a period of harsh repression. With the collapse of Soviet authority in 1989, Czechoslovakia regained its freedom through a peaceful "Velvet Revolution." On 1 January 1993, the country underwent a "velvet divorce" into its two national components, the Czech Republic and Slovakia. The Czech Republic joined NATO in 1999 and the European Union in 2004. Well We thought it was about time you all heard from me and some of my thoughts on the journey so far. The cycling has got a lot easier even though i will never catch up with Robin, he does stop quite a lot to look at birds and this gives me the chance to catch him. My legs have got much stronger and my calves will never look the same again. I think we are eating enough too which is great and we have really enjoyed German bakeries and chocolate, but unfortunately last night I bought some non chocolate from [View Full Entry]

I'd like to open this entry with a response to an anonymous "Matt," who apparently failed to notice the sarcastic tone behind my "criticism" of Turks for not speaking English. "Matt" left me a really angry message saying I'm the uneducated one. While I am a product of the public school system, I would hope that is not the case. I appreciate the attempts to cleanse my blog of its customary ethnocentrism, but I would hope that anyone bright enough to be offended would also be able to pick up on the subtlety of sarcasm. The inability to communicate with anyone [View Full Entry]

Greetings from the former Soviet Bloc. We have spent parts of the past 4 days in Eastern Europe and now is the time for me to share the exciting moments with you. Let's start with Budapest. Cold. Dreary. Non-stop rain. These are my initial thoughts as I look back at Budapest. Compared with the description of Athens--Prostitutes. Crack Houses. Pick Pockets--those are not bad thoughts. In reality, we enjoyed ourselves immensely in Hungary's largest city. We started our day off by purchasing tickets for our train ride to Prague. To continue with the constant theme of our journey: we [View Full Entry]

Fronting the Vltava River in New Town
Remember New Town is 500 years old.
Prague, at least to Nancy and to me, is a fascinating city to in which to wander around. We find it fun to just wander from street to street, seeing what we can see. There are so many beautiful buildings here, so many interesting nooks, corners, passageways, staircases, so many surprises to see. I believe if I am able to return to Prague for another extended period of time I will concentrate on taking pictures of the buildings. It is not that there is a beautiful building here and another in a separate part of town. They are everywhere, often sitting [View Full Entry]

The Dancing Buldings -- two new buildings in New Town
Old and new, side by side
This is a city full of music.

There are many sights to see in Cesky Krumlov, some very old and some not so old. Certainly these chairs are on the lighter side. June 29th, our departure date for home, is rushing toward us very quickly. It has become obvious that we will not complete the reports of our time here before we head home, that we will add more once we are at home. For instance I suddenly realized we did not give a report of the castle in Krakow, nor have we given any report of our hiking in the National Park at Hrensko, on the German [View Full Entry]

Very sneaky Europe » Czech Republic » Prague
Hey all, I've been in Prague the past week. My first night here sucked, however. My daypack with my passport, credit cards, money, camera, and pretty much everything else vital to travel was stolen while I slept at the hostel. Other than that, Prague's been great. Very affordable, fortunately. The castle here is kinda like Versailles, but with a big huge gothic cathedral in the middle of it. The Jewish quarter of the town is really interesting too. The cemetery there has about 100,000 people buried in it. The Jewish community didn't have permission to start another graveyard for the longest [View Full Entry]

this is my new Travel blog so I thought I'd make an update. I'm thrilled to death to be leaving in 15 days on my first trip out of the US. I'm 18 at the time and I am traveling with a former teacher, her best friend, and a friend/love intrest. Things I'm worried about: 1. Offending someone/ being taken for a stupid American 2. Not having enough money to survive 3. Losing my passport 4. Getting sick of my companions 5. Getting depressed. lonely, or homesick Other then that, everything should be great......... Hi All We have finally found a place to download our photos that doesn't cost us the price of a ticket back home. Any way lots to catch up on. We landed in London 30 hours after leaving home and it was 7.15am and not much sleep. Tania saw us to the apartment and then went off to work and we were instructed to go see London. So we did. We have been to every where and even caught a show in London. (The Lion King). Then 2 days later we were off to Paris on the Eurostar train. We did [View Full Entry]

Like all good trips, ours started out funny from the start: -Karly forgot the cards, and if you know my sister, she had been talking about playing me in a game of war for weeks while on our flight. Thank goodness we bought a deck at the airport, which kept us (or at least her) occupied for hours. -We sat next to this guy dressed in yellow on the plane who kept taking out and looking at this yellow velvet leotard. He also went through a series of fashion magazines and colored the models with yellow highlighers, giving them black polka [View Full Entry]

Miss Streger goes to Europe! Here is the plan: June 8th at around midnight I leave from PDX to JFK in New York. Since I have an eight hour layover I'm planning to visit Manhattan and see the Empire State building, New York City Library, and such. Then I get on a Czech plane to Budapest. June 10th I will arrive in Budapest in the morning. June 13th I fly to Prague and meet up with my best friend Bethany. We met when we were roommates for a year (2001) in Brno, Czech Republic. June 16th Bethany and I head back [View Full Entry]
