Following the First World War, the closely related Czechs and Slovaks of the former Austro-Hungarian Empire merged to form Czechoslovakia. During the interwar years, the new country's leaders were frequently preoccupied with meeting the demands of other ethnic minorities within the republic, most notably the Sudeten Germans and the Ruthenians (Ukrainians). After World War II, a truncated Czechoslovakia fell within the Soviet sphere of influence. In 1968, an invasion by Warsaw Pact troops ended the efforts of the country's leaders to liberalize Communist party rule and create "socialism with a human face." Anti-Soviet demonstrations the following year ushered in a period of harsh repression. With the collapse of Soviet authority in 1989, Czechoslovakia regained its freedom through a peaceful "Velvet Revolution." On 1 January 1993, the country underwent a "velvet divorce" into its two national components, the Czech Republic and Slovakia. The Czech Republic joined NATO in 1999 and the European Union in 2004. Note: there are no actual swans in this story. First, I had to get up early to pack and schlep luggage over to the hlavní nádraží (main train station), where I left my suitcase at the luggage desk. It's attended, cheap (15 Kč/day!), and Rick says it is said to be safer than the lockers. (My bag ended up just fine, so I'm satisfied with his advice.) Next, I headed back into the Staré Město (Old Town) and attended Mše (Mass) at the Kostel paní Marie pred Týnem (Church of Our Lady of Týn). The most interesting thing about this church [View Full Entry]

hi, not much time so this will be quick. we have decided to leave early tomorrow morning instead of staying for the day. Prague has lots of tourists and we are looking forward to seeing the castles in Germany. We will be on the train all day tomorrow. Hopefully we will get a room at a hostel, but we made no reservations so it might be an exciting night tomorrow! We are in Germany for two full days and 3 nights and then it's back to Paris. We will stay with Amy's family most of the time so it'll be nice [View Full Entry]

Greetings again from Praha (Prague)! Today I believe I have been successful at entertaining myself. I did, indeed, get up earlyish and catch a guided bus tour to Terezín (Theresienstadt in German), a former Nazi concentration camp and Jewish ghetto located about 60 km north of Praha. The bus tour was definitely the right way to go... because the entire town of Terezín comprises the museum, specific sights are located rather far from each other. My feet were grateful to have a shuttle between them, enough so that I think I can live with the prescribed itinerary and (reasonable) time limit [View Full Entry]

Take a wild guess where I was yesterday! Come on just guess! Think of a city in the Czech Republic. I wasn't in Brno, at least for most of the day. Have a place in mind? Were you thinking Znojmo? You weren't! Shocking! Robert and Lenka Kubiček took Bethany and I down to the little town of Znojmo (Z-noy-mo) for the day. It is a one and a half hour bus ride south. In fact it is so far south that the national park and one castle that belong to Znojmo actually spill over into Austria. The city built a series [View Full Entry]

Tasting the wine

hey all, I made it to Brno late last night. I sleeped in until 10am! Yikes! I knew I had been running hard but didn't realize how hard. I stayed around Gloria's house all day. I did laundry. How WONDERFUL it is to have clean non-smelly clothes! I love it! I finally left the house at 7:30 and joined the old gang from church. Currently I am at Milan's flat who has been kind enough to let me use his interent. I wrote up the next couple installments of my blog, I'll get them posted tomorrow! stay tuned! jenn [View Full Entry]

Today was pretty busy, too, but I'm thinking I may want to go sleep it off rather than write about it all night. ;) We started off with our new favorite tram #8, which zips us from our flat in Florenc right into Náměstí Republiky (Republic Square) and the old town. We started with an unexpectedly large meal ("rich breakfast" on the menu might have been a clue) at the Obecní dům, an Art Nouveau municipal and performance hall with a lovely café in front. The mad tourist rush when we arrived was not to be believed, but even more amazing [View Full Entry]

Prague, what a city! Amazing old buildings everywhere, some history, and it's nice to be in a place where I don't constantly go over my budget, this is a wonderfully inexpensive place to take a trip to. I arrived in Prague at about 2300, not the best time for it, but oh well. The train station in Prague is dodgy as hell, and at that hour I wasn't looking forward to navigating my way to the hostel on my own. Basically you have transients and potential muggers sitting around everywhere....watching you....thinking about targetting you.... So I looked for a fellow backpacker [View Full Entry]

Last summer I had the oppurtunity to go to the most beautiful city ever...Prague. It was nothing like what I was expecting it to be!! I was expecting Prague to be mostly farm lands and very rural. It was anything but. My favorite area of Prague was Old Town Square. The square looked so beautiful when it was lit up at night. I visited Prague July 1-4 2004. The day before the 4th of July, there was a huge soccer tournament. The square was filled with people. There were 2 HUGE tv screens set up in the square, so everyone could [View Full Entry]

Those of y'all who know me, this is no surprise. But it's interesting, I was reading elsewhere here that some intrepid young traveler has arrived in Prague for a 12-day stay. I just cannot imagine staying in one place for that long! And, of course, with the surprise windfall of two extra days next week, I've every intention of cramming in at least one more city. :) Stay tuned. Yesterday we saw more of Praha (Prague) than I ever imagined possible. We headed off to Pražský Hrad (Prague Castle) with every intention of spending the entire day there. On the way, [View Full Entry]

Hidden treasure at Prague Castle
I attempt to perpetrate art

Well, it is the last day in Prague. After waking up early and being pleasantly surprised to see brilliant blue sky, I headed out for the quickest picture and shopping hunt I could as I needed to be back at the hotel around 11 to pack and check out. Bethany decided we should go our separate ways this morning as we both wanted to get some shots but of different things. It was strange to walk the main streets and have them nearly empty. The shops weren’t open yet and the mass of tourist must have still been in bed. The [View Full Entry]
