This morning I went to Jessie’s bed and shouted obscenities in Czech in ear in order to get her awake. After I paid for that mistake, we headed out for our first sightseeing day. We went straight for Prague castle— again in torrents of rain. It was pretty amazing with views of the city and its red rooftops. We walked over Charles Bridge and saw the Astronomical clock. We made it to Wenceslas Square before we decided we had had enough of getting lost in the rain. It is really impossible not to get lost there. I’ve been an impeccable navigator in London—but Prague—I don’t know if I could ever master it. Besides, I don’t think I would want to. I’ve decided that the sights of Prague are somewhat being ruined by the city making them even more “attractive” to tourists. The real greatness of this historic city is in the less trampled-on streets, the ones we found by mistake, the food we didn’t plan to eat. We boarded our first train in Prague. Jessie was excited, as it was her first train ever. She demonstrated her excitement by promptly falling asleep on the way to Vienna. We made it to
Vienna, and without too much trouble, found our hostel— the Wombat Lounge. We were starved, as we realized it was 11:30 p.m. and we had only had a croissant and hot dog all day long. We didn’t know what Weiner Schnitzel was but knew it was authentic Viennese. We ordered it at a restaurant around the corner from the hostel and were very surprised to be given pork steak.
