Background: Following the First World War, the closely related Czechs and Slovaks of the former Austro-Hungarian Empire merged to form Czechoslovakia. During the interwar years, the new country's leaders were frequently preoccupied with meeting the demands of other ethnic minorities within the republic, most notably the Sudeten Germans and the Ruthenians (Ukrainians). After World War II, a truncated Czechoslovakia fell within the Soviet sphere of influence. In 1968, an invasion by Warsaw Pact troops ended the efforts of the country's leaders to liberalize Communist party rule and create "socialism with a human face." Anti-Soviet demonstrations the following year ushered in a period of harsh repression. With the collapse of Soviet authority in 1989, Czechoslovakia regained its freedom through a peaceful "Velvet Revolution." On 1 January 1993, the country underwent a "velvet divorce" into its two national components, the Czech Republic and Slovakia. The Czech Republic joined NATO in 1999 and the European Union in 2004.

It's been about a week since my first entry and I've done heaps of things since than (though I might not talk about them all here; gotta leave stories for when I get home). For the most part my time has been taken up with wondering around the city which is incredibly easy to do. Other than that, it's been museums, galleries and walking tours. And movies! The hostel I'm staying at has a really nice flat-screen t.v. and about 20 movies. It makes nice post-dinner activies. I don't think I raved enough (or at all) about this hostel in my [View Full Entry]

A little culture

Europe » Czech Republic » North » Prague
On our last day in Prague, I tried to introduce us to a little more culture that we do not have in the states. We walked around the city one last time and it is still really beautiful. Lots of arcitecture. Unfortunately, I do not know the difference between Renaissance, Baroque, Classical and all of the other styles...it is just really amazing!! I have not shown pictures or wrote enough about the city, just due to the limited time available on the internet at the cafe and the keyboards have the letters in different places. I promise I will write more [View Full Entry]

Monday night Buffie and I took off for the Coldplay concert in Prague. We planned our trip around the concert for some time, so it was very exciting when we finally got there! Coldplay was AMAZING, they put on one of the best shows both of us have ever seen. Suprisingly for a country that is proud of their beer, hardly anyone was drinking before or during the concert. We had some local Chech beer and it was so smooth and we both had a few glasses to get warmed up for the concert. Coldplay started the concert out with 'Life [View Full Entry]

So glad to finally be here... After 9 hours of being on planes we are finally here in the beautiful city of Prague. Everyone that has talked about the city has said that it is like nothing you have ever seen, and they are right. The building are in great shape and the ornate details on each of the buildings makes you feel like you are in Paris. Nothing is left out on details. Even the manholes are ornately decorated. The train system is efficient and very clean for such a big city. I have attached pictures... We have done quite [View Full Entry]

Day Five: Kostnice

Europe » Czech Republic » North » Prague
We stopped off on day five at the centuries old church of Kostnice. In the 14th century a half blind (and possibly mad, based on his legacy) decided to decorate the Church in human bones. Why is an excellant question but the overall effect is as impressive as it is creepy. Bones were piled in huge arcs, arranged to form coats of arms and even writing, and hung like macabre paper chains from the ceiling. We stood together for a group photo and someone started off a chorus of Dem Bones, which did not endear us to the security guard/ticket officer. [View Full Entry]

Day Four: Prague

Europe » Czech Republic » North » Prague
After an 8am breakfast (luxury) we went to Prague. The area we were staying in (Dejvika) was fairly average so it came as a huge suprise when we stepped out of the subway only to be surrounded by these beautiful old buildings. They didn't abate as we went further into the city as Prague (at least the centre of it) is composed entirely of beautiful old buildings. It is also very, very touristy: there were thousands of enticing, Aladdin's Cave type shops, allo of which were selling the same thing, but since I was only buying postcards I wasn't bothered. It was freezing cold (remember I'm from So. Cal. =) ) and rainy in Prague qwhen I arrived. The city looked dark and gloomy. The outer skirts of the old city felt scary. I had booked 4 nights but could have easily seen all of Prague in two days. I spent most of my time people watching in cafes. I did go on a city tour of the city nd visited the beautiful castle. Prague is a must see and in the warmer season for sure. I'm sure it sparkles and glistens in the sun. Really it is beautiful in [View Full Entry]

As many of you may well know I am currenty embarking upon a 50 day adventure in the Czech Republic. For the rest of you, now you do! Yesturday, for me, I don't know when for you guys in Vancouver..., I landed in Prague after an eight and half hour trans-Atlantic flight to Amsterdam via KLM, the Royal Dutch Airways (and I will add it is by far the best air plane company I have flown with, everything about it was a head and shoulders above any other company out there, and it was then put into higher esteem when compaired [View Full Entry]

Packing 2

Day Two was very much a driving day: we were held up on the roads and so we had to substitute our planned stop at Heidelburg Castle for one at Marksburg Castle. This was probably a good thing, seeing as it cut out four hours of driving. Markburg was very interesting: much bsmaller than the Scottish and English castles I've seen in the past; much smaller and -we got the idea- more cramped. Maybe because it was older, or maybe because it was built on a rocky outcrop where they couldn't expand much. Day Two ended at a campsite run by [View Full Entry]

Prague! What a beautiful city! I stayed at this fairly sketchy hostel....my stuff happened to get thrown out by the cleaning staff...just a few things....but they managed to rumage through the garbage and find it, then wash it, and then give it back to me...AWESOME, THANKS, REALLY APPRECIATE IT! Other than that one little issue, Prague was fantastic! I walked so much, I thought my legs were going to fall off. They have this beautiful cathedral surrounded by a palace on the top of the hill. You can see it from anywhere in the city, which also helps when you get [View Full Entry]
