Hradec Králové Travel Blogs

Background: Following the First World War, the closely related Czechs and Slovaks of the former Austro-Hungarian Empire merged to form Czechoslovakia. During the interwar years, the new country's leaders were frequently preoccupied with meeting the demands of other ethnic minorities within the republic, most notably the Sudeten Germans and the Ruthenians (Ukrainians). After World War II, a truncated Czechoslovakia fell within the Soviet sphere of influence. In 1968, an invasion by Warsaw Pact troops ended the efforts of the country's leaders to liberalize Communist party rule and create "socialism with a human face." Anti-Soviet demonstrations the following year ushered in a period of harsh repression. With the collapse of Soviet authority in 1989, Czechoslovakia regained its freedom through a peaceful "Velvet Revolution." On 1 January 1993, the country underwent a "velvet divorce" into its two national components, the Czech Republic and Slovakia. The Czech Republic joined NATO in 1999 and the European Union in 2004.

Duped

Europe » Czech Republic » North » Hradec Králové
hello everyone today is a sad day. we are beginning to come to the realisation that we may have been duped into buying our rail passes from a phoney website. basically, the tickets, which we should have received by yesterday still are to arrive and we are quickly losing travel time. it is pretty upsetting to think that we are not going to make it to turkey, which was supposed to be the point of the trip. however, we both had a discussion about the situation and have decided to get on with the trip regardless. therefore we have reverted to [View Full Entry]

This morning ladies and gentlemen, I passed my driving theory exam and then, rather unexpectedly, also completed my driving test due to my lack of knowledge of the Czech language. The day began very early, at about 0530, and I moved from my room to the living room to have a read through and understand more traffic situations especially the diamond shaped sign with a yellow square which still had the power to bewilder me. My study had been half hearted but I had remembered stuff from the translation and I reasoned that a lot of stuff was simple common sense. [View Full Entry]

this is our last night in hradec, inshallah. yusuf has his theory test at 0730 tomorrow morning (czechs start early) and we are hoping to be out of the city by 11am-ish. he is currently revising elsewhere in the faculty. the current problem we have is that our inter rail tickets have not arrived yet. they were supposed to arrive today or tomorrow morning; by secure delivery and obviously without them we cannot start the trip. therefore we have decided to figure an alternative route through poland and germany if we cannot get the tickets in time. however ideally, we want [View Full Entry]

Hradec Kralove
Hradec Kralove
A river winds along one side with shaded walkways and benches
After being pampered and coddled for 19 days with my parents and a subsequent 3 days with Jon, I got on a train and rode east for Hradec Kralove where I got to be pampered and coddled some more by Matt who is on a business contract out in this part of Czech. Why is everyone here? Because it really is that good. Admittedly, of the week I was out there, I only spent one afternoon in Hradec Kralove itself and another visiting nearby Kuneticka Hora Castle and driving through the countryside. A couple days were spent in R&R at the [View Full Entry]
