The lands that today comprise Croatia were part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire until the close of World War I. In 1918, the Croats, Serbs, and Slovenes formed a kingdom known after 1929 as Yugoslavia. Following World War II, Yugoslavia became a federal independent Communist state under the strong hand of Marshal TITO. Although Croatia declared its independence from Yugoslavia in 1991, it took four years of sporadic, but often bitter, fighting before occupying Serb armies were mostly cleared from Croatian lands. Under UN supervision, the last Serb-held enclave in eastern Slavonia was returned to Croatia in 1998. To be updated

Not everything is wild and falling water at Plitvice. There are beautiful areas of quiet also. You can walk beside a roaring waterfall and then by turning and walking a few steps into the forest be in a very quiet place with only the singing of birds breaking and the rustle of breeze blown leaves breaking the silence. A quiet forest path.
Quiet, but just a bit muddy in places.
Which path should we take?

The big falls is 78 meters high. This translates into about 253 feet. The big or high falls is the only one that comes from a spring fed stream. All the other falls and rapids come from lake water falling over the built up travertine ledges throughout the park. Travertine is a calcite deposit that very slowly builds up from very mineral rich water. [View Full Entry]

There were wildflowers everywhere in Plitvice, even wild Lily of the Valley. Where ever there was soil there were plants and wild flowers, even on the end of fallen trees sticking out of the water. [View Full Entry]

There is beauty everywhere you look here. The boardwalks lead the walker right beside the falls and cascades. I thought it interesting that cascade in Croatian is "kaskade." We walked about seven to eight hours each day we were in Plitvice, totally wearing ourselves out, but enjoying every minute of the day. I wish I had brought my pedometer along so I could make a fair estimate of how far we walked each day. My feet said eight to ten miles and that may be a fair estimate. [View Full Entry]

The water is a beautiful green and so clear you can see deeply into its depths and so pure you can drink it directly from the lakes. Anything that falls into the lake is slowly encrusted with the calcium lime that is highly concentrated in the waters. It is like a cave except it is the waters that come from the limestone mountains in this region. [View Full Entry]

The train rolled into Zagreb on track no. 1 about eight-thirty this morning. Our first task was to find out how to travel from the train station to the bus station as our destination was the Plitvice National Park. Plitvice was established as a national park in 1949 and in the '70's UNESCO declared it a world heritage site. The only way to get there is either to rent a car and drive, or take a bus. The trip is two to two and a half hours. Plitvice is near the Serbian border and it was here that the first shots [View Full Entry]

After leaving Venice, we cruised across the top of Italy’s boot to what used to be Yugoslavia, which is now split into several small countries -- Croatia, Serbia, Bosnia, Macedonia, etc. (“the Balkans”). Croatia is a little country of five million that grabbed most of the lovely coastline on the Adriatic Sea away from the other Balkan countries. Its majority ethnic group is Roman Catholic. It’s said to be more “Italian” than the other Balkans, which tend to have Orthodox and Muslim populations. There is tension between Croatians and their minor [View Full Entry]

Hi all this may end up being a bit quick, but am more intersted in trying to get some pictures available to you. They sometimes say so much more!!!! So last time we met, I was in Krawkow in a rather reflective mood. After that we left onto the slovakia Tatras mountains for some serious hiking. Very glad to find that I have a reasonable level of fitness, because this was some hard work. 4 hours the first arvo we arrive, then up at the crack of dawn the next morning to hike again for several hours. There is something so cool [View Full Entry]

Hello Dubrovnik!

I had the most amazing weekend in Croatia. The long weekend began with an overnight ferry from Ancona, Italy. This was the first cruise I have ever been on in my entire life. (Thank you, Dramamine!) We slept in a small inside cabin without any windows. As I drifted to sleep to the hum of the engines, I wondered what we would see when we woke up in Split, Croatia. At around 7am, we arrived in our destination, Split. It was an incredible sight to see that early in the morning with the mountains in the distance. We'd arranged to contact [View Full Entry]
