The lands that today comprise Croatia were part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire until the close of World War I. In 1918, the Croats, Serbs, and Slovenes formed a kingdom known after 1929 as Yugoslavia. Following World War II, Yugoslavia became a federal independent Communist state under the strong hand of Marshal TITO. Although Croatia declared its independence from Yugoslavia in 1991, it took four years of sporadic, but often bitter, fighting before occupying Serb armies were mostly cleared from Croatian lands. Under UN supervision, the last Serb-held enclave in eastern Slavonia was returned to Croatia in 1998. To be updated

Location: Dubrovnik Weather: Sunny, 33 °C Kathy and I both went on a tour in Dubrovnik - I gave her a break from doing the washing! The medieval city of Dubrovnik was beautiful. However in the heat the glare from the limestone roads was very bright and added to the extreme heat. I have to admit that I am getting tired of the heat - it is exhausting walking around and listening when it is too hot. An interesting fact about Dubrovnik - it was never conquered in its many centuries of existence, every time it looked like war might be [View Full Entry]

Wow - Croatia! We have had the most amazing time here. It has truly been the highlight of our trip and I am absolutely in love with this beautiful country. I had no idea it would be so amazingly excellent. I wish that we never had to leave but I know I'll never forget how spectacular this part of our journey was. We started in Split after taking the overnight ferry over from Ancona. Split has some great markets and I spent half my day ˝browsing˝ for dresses and sarongs. We stayed at a great campsite (Camp Stobrec) 6km outside of [View Full Entry]

Sunset from the turret bar on Korcula Island

Zadar - Day 9 (August 31) Bus travel again, but this afforded more great views of the Croatian coastline. From the bus station on the outskirts of the town we took a local bus to the harbour and old town. I‘m sure the locals just love it when a group of travellers with back packs cram onto their buses. This one was packed and most of our luggage was piled in the centre trapping one lady in, who panicked that she wouldn‘t be able to get out, and feell over bags and was caught by our leader who wa then stuck [View Full Entry]

What would Putin do? Europe » Croatia » Dalmatia » Dubrovnik
Somehow the theme of this trip ended up being ‘What would Putin do?’, strange but true. Scott and I, plus two good friends Adam and Myles headed for Croatia for 10days of sun, island hopping and bottles of Croatian’s finest vino (read horrid). We set out early Saturday morning with my work laptop backpack full of clothes, the night before we had a minor disaster. After our Sri Lanka trip we decided to throw away Scott’s backpack, clean forgetting this fact I merrily lent by backpack to Adam and it wasn’t until 11pm Friday evening we realised our predicament. Nochmal Pula Europe » Croatia » Istria » Pula

Check-in; Excellent, particularly because there were many lost pax making their way onto the Ika, who were supposed to be on the Istok, and I was more than happy to escort them over there so I could flirt with the lovely new cookie, Nikola. Day 1; Mljet (Polace) Number of pax for dinner; 22 (bbq) We had a nice sail into Polace, lots of beers and friend-making, and a very nice swim stop. Our bbq was a big success because we ate outside in the lovely evening, and Mama was there being her crazy self, and the Istok was beside us [View Full Entry]

Top 5 Istrian legends Europe » Croatia » Istria
1. Apart from the legends about the giants, there are also those about the fairies which are related to Istria. Such is the one about the building of the Arena in Pula . According to the legend, one night, the fairies had decided to build their own town, Divić town, and they carried the stones from Učka throughout the whole night, carefully putting them together. When at dawn the time came to put a roof on the Arena, they were interrupted by a rooster. When it crowed, the fairies ran away so that the people wouldn't see them an [View Full Entry]
