The lands that today comprise Croatia were part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire until the close of World War I. In 1918, the Croats, Serbs, and Slovenes formed a kingdom known after 1929 as Yugoslavia. Following World War II, Yugoslavia became a federal independent Communist state under the strong hand of Marshal TITO. Although Croatia declared its independence from Yugoslavia in 1991, it took four years of sporadic, but often bitter, fighting before occupying Serb armies were mostly cleared from Croatian lands. Under UN supervision, the last Serb-held enclave in eastern Slavonia was returned to Croatia in 1998. To be updated

this blog says that i am in croatia but i am not actually in croatia right now. i was a couple of weekends ago and its taken me this long to write this. some friends and i took a last minute trip to croatia over last weekend, spending a day in zagreb, taking an overnight bus to dubrovnik, staying one night there, taking the overnight bus back to zagreb and flying back to istanbul sunday evening. it was a quick whirlwind trip with a lot of bus time (thankfully overnight) and as much sightseeing as possible squeezed into a short amount [View Full Entry]

Or in other words Croatia and that's where I am at the moment. On Tuesday I took the train to Zagreb with the idea of catching the onward connection to Split, but the train was late so I had a 4 hour stop over in Zagreb. Of course I used this to wander through the city... There are loads of museums, but since I am poor and didn't have much time I didn't go in any of them. It also has a quaint old centre. Next I got the train to Split and arrived there quite late but there was somebody [View Full Entry]

Tack igen!

"Yes, but I have to tell yot it costs 40 euros?"

Lucka & I & the cheap (yet good) wine glass!
Hey! Well being my last weekend in Zagreb, Croatia....it called for a few big nights. Friday after work I headed to the Wonderland Exhibition which has finally arrive in Zagreb. Was a great night meeting participating architects from around Europe. How does working in Vienna or Berlin sound??? Great!!! The exhibition was interesting, the wine cheap and the music loud. The architects sure do know how to put on a good show over here. Friday night quickly turned into the early hours of Saturday, the night trams seemed to stop running and walking home was freezing! But after a few hours [View Full Entry]

I will not have to eat for at least another year now. I have never seem such a big pizza in all my life!!! The photos dont do it justice. I know I said I was hungry but this was just stupidity, Tony thinking I could eat half with him! I think the pictures tell the story the best! Going to miss you Tony!!! After consuming way too much pizza and beer, we headed for the town square where there was another party happening. A Christmas concert with famous Croatian bands and music. Lots more drinking and a hell of a [View Full Entry]
