Orbach and I are just wrapping up our time in Dubrovnik, we leave tomorrow morning by bus to start heading up the coast. Dubrovnik is probably best known for it's city walls. It has a beautiful old walled city with very high walls. The old town is very beautiful with many churches, cafes, and restaurants. There is even an old synagogue there. Other than the old town there really isn't a whole lot to do in town as it isn't yet high season and we haven't had the greatest of luck with the weather. So the last two days (today and yesterday) we decided to take some day trips to neighbouring cities, Yesterday we went to Mostar - a city in Bosnia and Herzegovina about 1.5 hours from Dubrovnik. Mostar was heavily bombed during the war ... read more

The flight from Bergen to Split itself was amazing. The sky was clear for almost the entire flight and the views were beautiful. I’m not sure if you can take pictures on a plane but I definitely did when we flew over the Austrian Alps. The views of all fot he islands and the Adriatic Sea when we were landing were stunning and we found ourselves getting incredibly excited to land and play in the sea. Getting off the plane when traveling from a cold climate to a Mediterranean climate was incredible. Our bodies were so confused but we were happy. It was kind of strange to get on the bus to the town and find out that all of the beautiful white buildings that I had seen from the air were white because they were ... read more

Geo: 43.5127, 16.4424The town of Split is built upon the remains of Diocletians Palace. The original Palace built by Diocletian for his retirement was huge with incredibly thick walls and large basements. Today you can walk around the remaining basement halls and see the thickness of the walls and foundations. There are lots of market stalls within the walls lining the way to the stairs up from the foundations. The Cathedral of St.Duje the patron saint is worth a visit but if you want to go up the tower or to the Treasury or crypt there is a charge of several more Kuna. We went round the local art gallery which has some renaissance but mostly wierd modern art so only go if you are a real art fan. There were plenty of outside market stalls selling ... read more

Geo: 42.6537, 18.0948We caught the shuttle bus from the pier to Pile Square just outside the impressive city walls which run all around the city. Once through the old gate you are in a clean attractive medieval street paved with marble and lined with lovely old buildings. The main thoroughfare is the Stradun, which has the Onofriou Fountain at its top end. This is no longer working but is still a nice piece of architecture. We paid a few Kuna to get in the Baptistery of St John but this is only one small Roman room containing one statue of St.John. The Old Pharmacy and the Cloisters are worth a visit as they contain some good Renaissance art and the 3 cathedrals are easy to pop into in a stroll around the streets as it is ... read more

LOKRUM ISL. Day 74 Late last night a new girl arrived into my room, from the US. Tanya is from the US but has been living in France. Since it was Easter morning we decided to have breakfast together out on the patio. When we got outside the owner of the hostel came out with some painted Easter eggs for our breakfast. They were very pretty and we were not sure if we were meant to eat them or not. So I asked the hostel man and he said that they eat the painted Easter eggs. After our communal breakfast, my bread and nutella and her fruit, we headed down to the bus station at the port to arrange our tickets to our next destinations and then went on to the old town. In the ... read more

Happy Easter! If there was any doubt that Croatia is one of the most Catholic nations in the world, I confirmed it this morning. My walk down the hill from the hostel to the bus station reminded me of a Friday night in Tiberias--nobody is walking around. Only now I can't find a McDonalds. Come to think of it, I don't think I have seen any fast-food joints in Dubrovnik. I think it is hard for Americans to grasp how religious other parts of the world are. Statistics will tell you that the US is the most religious but that is simply a result of the strong regional concentration of rednecks in certain parts of the country. I saw a pack of people walking up the street from the station but soon realized they were exiting ... read more

I'm sitting at the main square of Dubrovnik's Old Town. It's 10:30am and the sky is blue and the sun is shining brightly. I brought a fleece with me just in case but I am in shorts and a t-shirt. I was too tired to think about writing last night but what a day it was. One of the most memorable of my life. After a couple of hours of spectacular scenery, the bus arrived at the city's main bus station. Dubrovnik is not accessible by rail. The station stood in the shadow of a cruise-liner the size of a small country docked in the modern harbor. I found the nearest pay phone after realizing that my Hungarian phone did me no good. What a surprise. After a few attempts at an international calling agency I ... read more

DUBROVNIK Day 73 Today I woke and headed out to visit the old town. As I walked I tried to call Vjera but I couldn’t get the phone numbers to work; I hope she isn’t too worried. I wandered around the old town and along the old city walls. There was an Easter market inside the square so I went to check it out and bought a few little souvenirs. I left the old town and headed back along the road towards the beach. I stopped and took a path down the cliffs to one of the grottoish places. I lay on the rocks for an hour or so listening to the wave crash into the sides of the cliffs. It is such a lovely day with the sun shining and the beautiful blue water. I ... read more

Europe » Croatia » Dalmatia » Trogir April 1st 2010

It's early afternoon and I am sitting in Ivana Paula II square at the heart of the beautiful island-town of Trogir. The sun is beating down on me as I drink an Ozujsko pivo at an outdoor cafe. I didn't think that things could get any better than yesterday but I was wrong. It's warmer (gotta be pushing 70s), sunnier, ad I've had more of a chance to see this amazing country. I woke up this morning, showered and made myself a cup of instant. After I checked my email, I had a chance to chat with my roommate, a man in his 50s from Saskatchewan. Very friendly guy. I'm actually positive that I am almost walked by him earlier today in Trogir. I turned around before he could see me, though. I would rather explore ... read more
