On Wednesday morning we left rainy and cool london to spend a week in warm and sunny croatia. This time at least we weren't the only ones up so early. We organized this trip with 20 of Mike's friends from CTLS (for those who don't know, its the transnational legal program that he is studying with in London), and we rented a big house by the beach, so that they could study (and in some cases, take) their exams. Elysia was the lucky one who got to benefit from all the school's social events, as well as this trip, and not actually have to do the work. Needless to say, so far there has been some work done a whole lot of fun.
We spent the night before we left at some of Mike's classmates, Rome, Danny and Jeff's, place with 5 others. We were up pretty late and only got about 2 hours of sleep before our 3:45 wake up call. We were very excited. One of the guys coming had arranged a big van to come pick us all up, as well as another van picking up another group from elsewhere in London. We got to the airport
and due to long line ups at security, about 16 of us had to sprint for the plane. We were the last ones on. Two of us had gotten there earlier and were already on the plane, and they had thought we played a cruel joke on them, making them buy tickets and go alone. But we did make it just in the nick of time!
The flight was just over 2 hours so we arrived around 9 local time. We rented 4 cars and met up with the rest of the group who were there already. It was a fairly easy drive on the highway to our big house (very big! 12 rooms and 3 kitchens) just 10 mins south of Split in a town called Podstrana. The town really only contained a hotel, a few restaurants, a market and the bakery which we visited every day (in Croatian, it's called the Pekara). The roads were so much better than we expected, and driving around was easier than some of the central European countries.
Once we were settled into our rooms, we headed straight for the beach. The locals here think we're crazy to go to the
Trapped at the Train Tracks...
Two cars got through and we got trapped beach because it's still off season. They don't even stock their sunscreen yet. The ocean water was certainly cold, but because it was a warm day, it didn't bother us so much. We basically just sat on the beach and had some beer/wine and swam around in the water. It wasn't too epic of a day because by the time we got going it was later, and we all had such early mornings. Some of the group went shopping and cooked us a great meal, and we all had a big communal dinner outside on the patio as the sun set. We later just hung out and enjoyed some drinks before heading off to bed from sun and lack of sleep exhaustion.
Overall it was a great day. Some warm weather and a beautiful ocean... what else could you want?
