Day 1 Well today we spent a bit of time just wandering around Hvar town. Most importantly we found a coffee bar that sold semi-decent coffee! (oh how I miss really good coffee!!). We spent the morning walking around the beautiful coastline then headed back to the hotel for a little rest. Well it turned out to be a really long sleep then a lot of nothing!! For dinner we went to a little authentic Croatian place. We knew it was going to be interesting when the owner was out the front carving a big piece of smoked meat with a huge knife and there were chunks of smoked meats hanging from the ceiling and the menus were held together with old iron hand tools (eg mine had a hammer) !! The food was incredible! Dalmatian ... read more

First it was yachts – now it’s mega-yachts. Beautiful Hvar Island is now a required stop for restless international trend-spotters always alert to the latest island paradise. Hvar deserves the honour, for it is the sunniest and greenest of the Croatian islands. Called the ‘Croatian Madeira’, Hvar receives 2724 hours (roughly 240 days) of pure sunshine each year. The stunning interior is a panorama of lavender fields, peaceful villages and pine-covered hills. For those that have never seen pictures of Hvar, I would describe it as the Caribbean made sweet love with St.Tropez and their baby; the beautiful island of Hvar. A melange of quaint beauty with rustic flare and luxurious sophistication makes Hvar the ideal destination for us cheap-skating backpackers and those slightly high-flying, big-boat-owning, 79 euro caviar eating, lavish-life living toffs. We stayed in ... read more

Well, sunday confirmed it - sick. I guess it was inevitable. You can't keep up this kind of pace and share rooms with that many dirty backpackers without something eventually catching up to you. On my train to Zagreb I started feeling a swelling in my throat and then got off into the unsavory Croatian humidity and spent the next two hours searching for my hostel. (I think Croatia officially wins the award for worst direction givers, as I had a similarily hard time finding my place in Split). Got to the hostel and...closed. Shit! Backtracked to an HI Hostel and went straight to bed. It was about two in the morning at that point. Woke up in the morning and felt like death. I was skeduled to go to the Plitvice Lakes the next day, ... read more

Im on a Boat

Celebrating Kyle's birthday at midnight on what felt like a bc ferry with a piece of chocolate cake and a few homemade gin and juices we arrived in Split, Croatia at 7:30 the following morning. Luckily for us the tranfer between ferries took about 20 minutes and we set sail towards Hvar Island not before enjoying our first real breakfast containing eggs since Bordeaux. After 14 consecutive hours on a ferry we arrived at the northern end of the island and caught an oven with wheels into town. Being unprepared like usual, we were fortunate enough to be in Croatia where the average homeowner begs for tenants the second you step foot on their turf. Within seconds we found our cheapest, nicest, and most private accomadations thus far on our trip, all before noon. Stoked for ... read more

After we checked out of our hostel this morning we went down to the harbour to find our boat. We checked in and put our luggage in our little cabin and set sail at 1pm. There were 28 people on our boat, 3 couples and 22 girls! 22 out of the 28 people are Australian so we are totally outnumbered! We set sail towards Hvar, stopping on the way in a little bay to jump off the boat and swim. The water was amazing, its so clear and blue and it sparkles like crystals. Once the captain got the all clear from the dock we were able to leave and sail around to Hvar. Hvar had similar buildings and streets to in Split, but it was much less busy. We climbed up a mountain to a ... read more

Hi Some more photos, this time Croatia. Our first stop was the Plitvice lakes national park . This is a very impressive set of limestone lakes and waterfalls and provided two days of great walking. The rain caught up with us for half a day there, not so bad as there had been flooding on the TV news every night but we never knew just where it was! Then on to Split where we dumped the car. We had seen Split as just a "pass through" place but really quite liked it. It was Venetian for quite a while and the little alleys certainly have something of Venice about them - no canals or gondolas though. Then we jumped onto a ferry to Brac, one of many Adriatic islands hung along this coast. The sun was ... read more

We drove on to find our final and main destination at Hvar Town on Hvar Island. Arriving in Split we quickly managed to book a ferry and 2 hours and £45 (one way fare) later, we were on the 2 hour sail to Stari Grad in Hvar, where it appears all the car ferries go to, then 25 minutes drive to Hvar Town. The town is an initial nightmare as there are no street names, lots of one way streets and pedestrianised areas making it very difficult to find our accommodation. However, we managed to park, find the tourist information office and were given directions by the girl there who once nearly broke into a smile (or did we imagine it? she was after all Croatian!) They say that Hvar is the ‘St Tropez’ of Croatia ... read more

Before starting my new blog I need to express how Croatian coast is beautiful. Dalmatia is very nice and hopefully we will visit it again next year over summer time. We enjoyed it, we liked it very much. Makarska, Hvar, Split are beautiful places and Dubrovnik. We wanted to visit more places but it was not enough time to explore more places. The personification of these places is a deep history carrying beautiful monuments, buildings from that century. Also, see is absolutely beautiful. We did some diving, it was the first time in my life that I dived. It was a bit scary but I enjoyed it. After relaxed time in Dalmatia we took long flight from Zagreb to Auckland. That was a really long way to New Zealand. We arrived yesterday and enjoying in beautiful ... read more
