The Bulgars, a Central Asian Turkic tribe, merged with the local Slavic inhabitants in the late 7th century to form the first Bulgarian state. In succeeding centuries, Bulgaria struggled with the Byzantine Empire to assert its place in the Balkans, but by the end of the 14th century the country was overrun by the Ottoman Turks. Northern Bulgaria attained autonomy in 1878 and all of Bulgaria became independent in 1908. Having fought on the losing side in both World Wars, Bulgaria fell within the Soviet sphere of influence and became a People's Republic in 1946. Communist domination ended in 1990, when Bulgaria held its first multiparty election since World War II and began the contentious process of moving toward political democracy and a market economy while combating inflation, unemployment, corruption, and crime. Today, reforms and democratization keep Bulgaria on a path toward eventual integration into the EU. The country joined NATO in 2004. To be updated

Happy Valentines day! Europe » Bulgaria » East » Boyana
'A happy Valentines day to all our readers'(hopefully). Here we currently have very cold wind to contend with, strong as well, as sitting here in my room with super ser on i listen to it howl around the eaves. Yesterday i interspersed my mail writing with a bath(not many places provide bath, bed, gas heating and internet connection together.!).Today I'm just glad to have peace for a while as yesterday my Bulgarian was stretched to the limit trying to get 2 of M's grandchildren to leave me in peace and go away to their own houses! In the end i succeeded but it took [View Full Entry]

Beginning Europe » Bulgaria
I write this from Sabiha Gökçen airport, waiting for my flight to London to board. I got here two hours early and it was delayed an hour. I’ve only been in Istanbul for about 13 hours—Dan and I arrived from Sofia via bus at 5:30AM this morning. It’s been a strange day and an eventful week. Let’s start from the beginning. On Monday morning Dan and I left for Edirne, which is, I believe, the westernmost city in Turkey—it used to be Adrianople. There isn’t much there to suggest that it used to be the second most important city of two [View Full Entry]

Home sweet home. Europe » Bulgaria » East » Boyana
Hi all! I can't tell you how good it feels to be back in Boyana.Unlike previous Boyana reports I have to announce with great pleasure that i am writing this from the top bedroom of the Lizard house, my own not being able too acheive a full signal. The only problem until 2 days ago was that it had no water inside although my leaking tap outside meant that the input remained unfrozen. However following entry to the property it then runs underground for about 12 feet to the house inlet.Since night temps were regularly from -15 to-4C, it remained frozen until [View Full Entry]

Ryan and I decided to take our December holiday in Bulgaria with three of our friends. We went to Sofia and then Plovdiv from the train in Istanbul. Overall, we had a really great vacation. However, as in all good vacations, we had a couple of really bizarre moments, all of which I think took place on the trains. It took us 16 hours to get from Istanbul to Sofia - we were overbooked on our sleeping train so all five of us were in one tiny room (very funny at first, although short lived). On the train ride from Sofia [View Full Entry]

Freezing our butts off! Europe » Bulgaria » West » Sofia
Finding our hostel in Sofia was a bit of a scavenger hunt. The Hostel Mostel was listed in our Lonely Planet and was on our map of Sofia. We thought it would be a piece of cake to find. The spot listed as the Hostel Mostel was easy to find, but there wern't any hostels near the dot on the map. We must have looked somewhat flustered as we were standing on the sidewalk, because a German fellow came up to us to help us decipher the cyrillic road signs. With the German's help we were able to find a large [View Full Entry]

Seasons greetings to all.!!Can't believe how long it has been since I last updated. As usual much has happened since then.J+J arrived and even bought a car to use over here.their house has a garage so it can be secure. They sorted out teething problems with neighbour and agreed that 4 months was too long to leave car unused. So I am giving it an airing now and then.Have to say it's only since I started using it that I realise how greedy mine really is.The house(24) got 4 new convector radiators that trickle along not using much in way of electricity at [View Full Entry]

We arrived in Skopje, our third city of the day, without a solid plan. Evening was setting in, but that was about the only thing we were sure of. We changed a little money and decided to try to contact Emrah's friend, Sotir. I sailed into a closet-sized shop, hoping to buy a card for the payphone, but the communication Titanic was destined to sink. I gave a English a shot and the middle-aged woman replied "your efforts are of no use, my child," in Macedonian, or it could've been just about anything else, for all I knew. Turkish yielded a [View Full Entry]
