update on a good day

 Europe » Bulgaria » East » Yunets
Well haven't cracked the photos situation yet but other things of significance have happened.Firstly I am enrolling for bulgarian tutoring(one on one at the moment) For 2 hours each time and 30 sessions overall.Am going to pay the 168Lv for the priviledge today and begin tomorrow. I will be glad of this new skill more especially in dealing with officials and red tape!! The latest being that my last visit to Yunets coincided with the electric man coming to read the Boyana meters. He was able to read 24 , but since (current )one is inside he needed the key.fatmay let [View Full Entry]

Okay, so whilst leaving Romania I found myself in the same cabin as two American guys and one Romanian. One of the American guys was really nice and relaxed, but the other one was quite irritating to be honest. Anyway it turned out that the annoying one was going to the same place as I was - Veliko Tarnavo - whilst everyone else was heading to Istanbul. Eventually the conductor moved the annoying guy out of our cabin to one which had a bit more room. The rest of the trip was fairly uneventful, and I spent most of the time [View Full Entry]

Gorge
Jenny here, hi guys!! Finally made it into Bulgaria after extremely long detour to get across the border from romania, which resulted in us doing 65, 90 and 85 miles on three successive days! Only been in Bulgaria 4 days and already had a coulpe of epics! On saturday when we crossed the bridge into Bulgaria it was 7pm and we had already done 80 miles. Ian punctured crossing the bridge and by the time he fixed it, it was nearly dark. Cue rather thrilling (in a bad way) 5 mile ride along dual carrieageway into town of Ruse, looking for [View Full Entry]

Bulgaria to Turkey

 Europe » Bulgaria
Bulgaria. All the advice we had been given was to get through Bulgaria in one hit, with as few stops as possible so as to avoid any nastiness of any sort. We crossed the river into the country where the border procedures were swiftly completed. It amounted to a stamp in our passports and the purchase of an auto route sticker for the windscreen - a sort of congestion charge by another name, ie a road tax. I don’t understand why foreigners are exempt this charge when they drive in the UK. The roads were good, relatively free of traffic and [View Full Entry]

Colourful Square
Colourful Square
There were so many vibrant colours around the whole city - definitely not a dreary and dull place
I was dragging my feet leaving Greece, ashamed to admit that the comfort of a developed nation had enveloped me and enticed me back into a way of life I know all too well. But there was no need to worry...futile really...as I found a spring in my step as I ventured through Sofia, Bulgaria's capital, for the first time despite my lack of sleep on the overnight train journey from Thessaloniki (I thought it a waste not to stop and check out Bulgaria given I was passing through...the harvesting in Romania would wait a couple of more days!). There is [View Full Entry]

B-day hurreh!

 Europe » Bulgaria » East » Varna
3rd time lucky as today immigration came good and I now have residency permit for 10 yrs!!One major headache disposed of. My last weekend at the new Yunets property was so delightful I'm thinking of going again this weekend.Byala is a lovely town with a good range of shops, nice town square and a beach that has a backdrop of flowstones and stalactites just hanging off the rocks and only 8 miles from the house.Botty also loved his hol. home ,though not the beach,so if I go I'll bring him again. The vagaries of the purchase ,not evident at time of viewing [View Full Entry]

Sofia Mosque
Sofia Mosque
Legend has it Sinan designed it, but study clearly says he did not . . . so why are we still talking about it? Jennifer's first visit to a mosque!
We're in an internet cafe now trying to sort out banking information since we charged more than we thought we would to the credit card (the LP Guide said all train tickets would be cash and so far only RILA has been), USAA loves international travellers! Our Last Day in Sofia We had an extended dinner at Happy Bar and Grill our favorite place in Sofia where we were taken care of by a most horrible server and then went to the bar where we were taken care of by Victor who was wonderful though he would not sell Jennifer the [View Full Entry]

Alexander Nevski Church
Built in Russian style in recognition of the Russians liberating the Bulgarians from the Turks. The church is from the 19th century but the interior looks very old from all of the candle smoke.
Arriving in Sofia We arrived no problem into the station this morning at about 6:30AM absolutely exhausted, only to be told that we couldn't buy our Serbia tickets at the RILA office because there were people waiting in line to buy tickets for trains departing in a few minutes. We asked about the central ticket office and if we could buy there and they said yes. So we went to the central ticket office later and it was closed. Had a sneaking suspicion that would be the case! Despite the train situation it was a good day because as soon as [View Full Entry]

Never rains but what.........

 Europe » Bulgaria » East » Varna
This phrase applies both physically and metaphorically! As regards to the later - Immigration I found out yesterday(B-day - Bulgarian registration day) had forgotten to send the statement I made saying I'd found the passport and so application was refused because of 'Invalid passport'. Once she found the form in the office she said she would sort out with sofia but because of nat. hols Thur/Fri it would probably b Tues before I could get it now!! At least somewhere down the line I will suceed. Just to emphasise the fact the weather appeared to be sympathetic/prophetic. I had finished my [View Full Entry]

Well I have now purchased a master bed for top room and a suite for lounge upstairs.Fortunately there is a 15 day wait before delivery as the builders did not arrive today.I WAITED UNTIL 11 AM THEN LEFT TO GO PICK UP THE REMAINING TABLE AND BENCHES TO JOIN YESTERDAY'S CHAIRS .At least that was the idea. unfortunately altho the van is big enough the doorway is small so the only non-flatpack items I bought had to be partially dismantled; when going thro the window proved to be nearly ok but a miss---.!! That's life plus on arrival at Dobrich to [View Full Entry]
