The Bulgars, a Central Asian Turkic tribe, merged with the local Slavic inhabitants in the late 7th century to form the first Bulgarian state. In succeeding centuries, Bulgaria struggled with the Byzantine Empire to assert its place in the Balkans, but by the end of the 14th century the country was overrun by the Ottoman Turks. Northern Bulgaria attained autonomy in 1878 and all of Bulgaria became independent in 1908. Having fought on the losing side in both World Wars, Bulgaria fell within the Soviet sphere of influence and became a People's Republic in 1946. Communist domination ended in 1990, when Bulgaria held its first multiparty election since World War II and began the contentious process of moving toward political democracy and a market economy while combating inflation, unemployment, corruption, and crime. Today, reforms and democratization keep Bulgaria on a path toward eventual integration into the EU. The country joined NATO in 2004. To be updated

Well here I am writing again, but this time I find myself in my homeland of Bulgaria, visiting the family. This is the first time I have ever been here alone, but it is largely how I imagined it would be...I spent a couple of days in the beginning in the capital of Sofia, where I was born, where I saw my aunt and some of my cousins. I spent the majority of the time with my aunt, who showered me with gifts of jewelry as she always does...earrings, rings, necklaces, all of it! We walked around the neighborhoods, ate some [View Full Entry]

I have had some trouble starting this entry. As I write, I watch the goat herders with their flock pass outside my window. I hear my neighbors’ roosters crowing. The sun is shining, yet there is snow on the not so distant Stara Planina ranges. The air is cool, and is mixed with the unmistakable smell of livestock and the sweet smoke of wood burning stoves. The bees are pollinating the beautiful cherry blossoms; I can hear their collective buzz outside my window. We arrived in the small village of Dzhulyunitsa outside Veliko Tarnovo about two weeks ago. This was our [View Full Entry]

Well the snow was gone by 4 days that time and I was aware that J+J were arriving on 22nd Feb and would be dissapointed that they had no snow. Again I found myself waiting for the next pension payment, as on top of the expenses I alsom had got 50Lv for G+M's electricity and 140 Lv for mine. However when i went [View Full Entry]

Bulgaria - You're so vain!! Europe » Bulgaria » West » Bansko
One of Chris Alger's wily investments had seen him purchase a one bedroom apartment in the Bulgarian ski resort of Bansko. So what better way to enjoy this than to cram six of us into the apartment for a 6 day skiing holiday - and as we drew straws for the beds, Chris ended up sharing a futon in the lounge of the apartment that he actually owned! Getting there had been the usual "no-queuing" affair that is always a regular feature with Alger Jnr at the helm. This time we were cutting it so fine to get to the airport [View Full Entry]
