The Bulgars, a Central Asian Turkic tribe, merged with the local Slavic inhabitants in the late 7th century to form the first Bulgarian state. In succeeding centuries, Bulgaria struggled with the Byzantine Empire to assert its place in the Balkans, but by the end of the 14th century the country was overrun by the Ottoman Turks. Northern Bulgaria attained autonomy in 1878 and all of Bulgaria became independent in 1908. Having fought on the losing side in both World Wars, Bulgaria fell within the Soviet sphere of influence and became a People's Republic in 1946. Communist domination ended in 1990, when Bulgaria held its first multiparty election since World War II and began the contentious process of moving toward political democracy and a market economy while combating inflation, unemployment, corruption, and crime. Today, reforms and democratization keep Bulgaria on a path toward eventual integration into the EU. The country joined NATO in 2004. To be updated

Sofia

10th November Arrived into Sofia at 6am - vowed (yet again) that we would never do another overnight bus journey! Found a good hostel for the next 24hrs and after catching up on some sleep went out to explore the city. Sofia is an undiscovered capital on the edge of Europe with a lot to offer the adventurous tourist. We stumbled across the remains of a Roman village and 4th century church hidden within the grounds of the Presidential Buildings. Visited a number of Bulgarian Orthodox churches all with beautiful frescoes and chandeliers. Identified the old Communist Party Headq [View Full Entry]

"Come to Bulgaria, your cars are already here" - Bulgarian joke tourist slogan aimed at Western Europeans (though probably with an ounce of truth in it...) "No this is real natural yoghurt, its not your western muck!" - G in response to Erika asking if the Bulgarian yoghurt had gelatin in it. We finally left Vratsa on Monday, 6 days after arriving! G accompanied us on a great cycle out of the city and over the hills into the Iskar gorge. The hills around Vratsa are really beautiful - very white limestone rocks which shimmer in the hot sun. The last [View Full Entry]

We finally leave Brasov quite late in the afternoon after last emails to Robin’s parents arranging for replacement bank cards etc. We cycle for a meagre 13 miles but it feels so good to be cycling again and we find a lovely camp site near the main road but back up near the woods and a river. The land is for sale so this actually translates in Romania to a free camp site that is already well dotted with Romanian families camped for what looks like a good while, all with their own camp fires. We pitch our new tent and [View Full Entry]

Heading east

 Europe » Bulgaria
There's not a whole lot to report on our journey east from southern Albania to Istanbul - we travelled to Iaoninna in North-western Greece, through Thessaloniki, Greece's second city, and on to Plovdiv in southern Bulgaria. The route can only be characterised by a series of mishaps on my part. First, I forgot about the extra hour Greece has on Albania, and so, we missed our early bus to Thessaloniki, having already bought the tickets. We had spent just the one night in Iaoninna - an average sized city on a lake with a nice Old Town. Not much else [View Full Entry]

Roman ruins, Plovdiv

Small taste of Beograd
Small taste of Beograd
The main Orthodox cathedral in Beograd, Serbia...Visited there around June 29th.
I really don't have a lot to say today, not much to tell really. I've been in Bulgaria for the past 5 days in Plovdiv and Veliko Tarnovo (велико тарново). They're both nice places, or should I say nice places to tour. They have lots of old ruins around, and generally the Stari Grad (Old Town), is very nice to wander around in and still retains some authentic charm; however, I have to say that Bulgaria thus far has held the enchantment and interest for me like some of the places that I've been previously. Ah, but i [View Full Entry]

Living in Bulgaria
Living in Bulgaria
This was the view from my friend's apartment.
Well, I'm lying here in my hard narrow bed at the Hotel Pop Bogomil in Sofia. A lot of stuff has gone on and gone down since my last entry. Yesterday was perhaps the craziest most event filled birthday of my life. I didn't even realize it was my birthday until 10:30pm. Pazardjik was such a gritty, real, tangible place. It's strange to lie back now and digest it. After the first day it has been raining like all the time and the hours we were keeping were not normal. Our first night, Thursday, we were out until 2am. Friday we [View Full Entry]

Pazardjik Heat
Pazardjik Heat
It must have been close to 100 F.
It is my first full day here in Pazardjik. I am traveling around Eastern Europe with my friend. To start the trip off we are visiting a high school buddy who is living in Bulgaria. We are currently staying in his Peace Corps provided apartment. It is pleasantly dilapidated just the way I like it. This is the second time I am visiting a friend during their Peace Corps assignment. We've spent the day wandering around the town center, clothes shopping, and generally lazing around at cafes. The girls here are unbelievable. Definitely not what you think of when you think [View Full Entry]

Szófia mögött magasodik, a város tüdejének is hívják
(Egyébként azok a magyarok ajánlották, akikkel Ahtopolban találkoztunk.)
