Background: The Bulgars, a Central Asian Turkic tribe, merged with the local Slavic inhabitants in the late 7th century to form the first Bulgarian state. In succeeding centuries, Bulgaria struggled with the Byzantine Empire to assert its place in the Balkans, but by the end of the 14th century the country was overrun by the Ottoman Turks. Northern Bulgaria attained autonomy in 1878 and all of Bulgaria became independent in 1908. Having fought on the losing side in both World Wars, Bulgaria fell within the Soviet sphere of influence and became a People's Republic in 1946. Communist domination ended in 1990, when Bulgaria held its first multiparty election since World War II and began the contentious process of moving toward political democracy and a market economy while combating inflation, unemployment, corruption, and crime. Today, reforms and democratization keep Bulgaria on a path toward eventual integration into the EU. The country joined NATO in 2004.

After the false dawn in the last blog, we found the changing of the guard this time - same location outside the President’s Building minus the heavies with the dark glasses. The numbers of soldiers were somewhat less, but more than compensated by some red uniforms and an awful lot of goose stepping. Central Sofia is not that big on must see sights, but various recommendations after the Nevski seem to point to the Sofia Synagogue. We never did see the interior, as it was firmly locked up on both occasions - the sign indicated opening times, but the padlock gates [View Full Entry]

The arrival into the new swanky Terminal 2 at Sofia Airport on the eastern fringes of the city was smooth and efficient. The terminal is presumably an investment by the EEC to redistribute wealth across all it’s citizens and give an outwardly modern first impression of Bulgaria to the outside world. We relieved the cash machine in the arrivals hall of some Leva and avoided the vigorous pestering of the taxi touts, who were keen to relieve as much as possible of the above wedge. If you don’t fancy the Number 84 bus, a good first decision in Sofia Airport is [View Full Entry]

Well umm dont know where Caroline left the last one!! Think we just left 2 days of glorious sunshine on the med and headed north (getting sick of Turkey) We first went to see the calcium pools at Pamukkale and so old ruined city the pools could have been fantastic but as water wasnt flowing over the edges it was quite dull. From there to Ephesus another ruined city from way back when Jesus played fullback for Jerusalem....way over priced being a tourist destination and alittle concrete than one would have like and coach parties coming out our ass. So a [View Full Entry]

Total Distance Cycled: 854km over 9 cycling days The forecast for Tuesday and the rest of the week was suppose to be nice, but overnight and into the morning there was no sign of that. I'm not sure if we had even seen the sun since a week ago Sunday. We took our time until there was some confirmation that the weather was starting to break. It finally did, and we were off by 9:30! We found a side road for the first 25km that avoided the main highway that had driven Shauna bit nuts the other day. The road was [View Full Entry]

Homeward Bound Europe » Bulgaria » West » Sofia
Our growing laziness had not evaded us and our estimated time of departure from Plovdiv began to be aimed much later during the day. The "fast" train was slightly too soon for us to move from the cosy garden social area in the hostel, and we were ambivalent as to getting the "slow" train since we had little else planned that day really! Plus the slower train was a little cheaper as our faux budget tightened. After about three and a half hours, we arrived in the capital of Bulgaria - Sofia! Now, our treat... We had decided earlier on in [View Full Entry]

Well I have finally started my travels, and first stop is Sofia, Bulgaria. A country I know little about, and whose language completely escapes me. I feel somewhat disabled by this and struggle not start speaking Spanish as my brain only knows two languages; English and Foreign. We arrived today at noon, Nikesh my travelling buddy who I met for the first time at Gatwick this morning, but had planned to travel to the IFMSA conference together via email. Luckily we get on! We were welcomed to Sofia with sunshine and blue skies, and given a glimpse into the Iron belt. [View Full Entry]

...Continuing Work... Europe » Bulgaria » West » Sofia
UPDATE: The land clearing phase has just ended and as you can see from the photos, the property is actually taking some form now. Both older houses have been completely demolished and all that is remaining are some rocks (used for walls and base) from the smaller old house. The rock pile has grown considerably and my back is thankful that this work is finished for now. Our friendly backhoe operator performed some good work for us was able to clear most of the thick bushes and trees away from the land. He also formed a parking area adjacent to the [View Full Entry]

Well this morning we left Plovdiv to head back to Sofia. After the usual train fun we have come to enjoy (really how can you call a train 'express' when its 30 minutes late?!?) we made it back to Sofia, or as they call it here, squiggle. Sofia bored us before, there was little to do and were here purely because the plane happens to be here. Were stopping in a different hostel this second time, a place that's won loads of awards and shiny things. When we arrived we were given a talk off the staff about what to do [View Full Entry]

Sofia travels Europe » Bulgaria » West » Sofia
I took another lazy day today. I woke up to a bit of thunder, and was not at all motivated to move. Also, I could hear the street dogs barking all last night and wasn't too keen on meeting them in person. So instead, I decided to take today to upload a bunch of photos, organize some travel stuff, and just relax. Oh, and I had no local currency yet, and I didn’t really feel like roaming the streets of Sofia by myself. Sketch. When I went down for supper though, the restaurant was closed. Crap. Looks like I’ll be venturing [View Full Entry]

I had the most bizarre encounter as I left Frankfurt. I truly have skill. Bus ride last night was alright - I didn’t sleep much b/c I’m so excited/nervous about Bulgaria, but I still managed to get 2-3 hours. I hate passport control… again, at 12:30am as we pass into Germany we get the guards. At least they were friendly… but we got stuck there for an hour. Sigh. Rest of the bus ride was uneventful (I talked to 2 American boys for a bit while stuck in controls), and then I had breakfast at the train station before taking the [View Full Entry]
