From Istanbul I got a bus to neighbouring Bulgaria, which meant that after 17 months I was officially back in Europe and politically too - Bulgaria, unlike Turkey is a fully fledged member of the European Union. Fellow travellers had told me that Bulgaria was ‘okay’, ‘alright’, ‘shit’, ‘corrupt’ and ‘alright, avoid Sofia’ and ‘watch your bags’. Posts on travel forums like the Lonely Planet’s Thorn Tree had headings such as ‘Bulgaria - avoid, avoid, avoid!’. However as hard-boiled traveller Paul Theroux tells us, “all travel is a lesson in self-preservation” and I imagined Bulgaria to not be too different to everywhere else I’d been and I had prevailed so far. Besides I needed live music and was going there for that. I’d fallen upon the Spirit of Burgas music festival which was featuring dance pioneers ... read more

Well, Burgas... There's not too much to report as most of our days followed a similar pattern - get up late, get lunch, go to beach, get dinner, go to festival, go to bed etc. However, we shall endeavour to elaborate as we can... On the first full day we actually decided to go and arm ourselves with some reading material. As usual, when you find an bookshop with English literature you are somewhat restricted to the Penguin/Wordsworth classics. So, between us we have two Thomas Hardy novels - Far from the Madding Crowd and Fair Blue Eyes... a good old bit of tragic love story to depress you on the beach. As for the beach, well, how much can we explain? It had sun.... sea.... and sand! Altogether quite a nice beach, in fact, on ... read more

Finally, another blog update - it seemed the recent lack of entry rather concerned someone (Mother Bywaters) as to whether we are still alive - but I can safely say we are. The lack of updates is mostly due to the fact that for the past few days, we have been chilling on the beach and going to the festival at night, leaving very little time/energy to write anything. Plus, using internet that is about as fast as dial-up is mental torture. So, where we left off was in Bucharest - anticipating our ridiculously early start for the bus to the Bulgarian coast. Having got up at 5.45am, we were waiting bleary eyed in a car park next to the Gara de Nord for the coach, watched over by some community dogs. The bus was a ... read more

Moja bulgarska przygoda trwa dopiero tydzien a wydarzylo sie juz tyle, ze zupelnie nie wiem od czego zaczac. Jak to wszytko ujac. Zaskoczenie na kazdym kroku. Syf i rozpierducha totalna! Upal, brud i szpetne twarze. Komunistyczne budynki, komunistyczny ... read more

Well, we had 3 weeks in the resort of Sunny Beach staying in a gorgeous studio apartment (which cost us less per night than camping in Bohinj!) about 15 mins drive from the mayhem of Sunny Beach resort. We had it all... glorious weather (up to 37 degrees one day), more swimming pools than we could ever hope to swim in (including the wave pool that our studio overlooked), a balcony with a fabulous sea view where we spent our nights reading and playing chess (while drinking v cheap beer & wine) and a fully fitted kitchen where we cooked gorgeous food every day (we actually managed to go 2 full weeks without eating out!). I even had time to finally sort out the music on my ipod and created a number of playlists which will ... read more

It's been three months since I've arrived in Bulgaria. Now, in the comfort of my apartment overlooking the Black Sea and the ever so glorious Helios Bay, I write about the journey I have traveled up until this point. I am coming to grips with the Cyrillic tongue faster than I ever imagined, sometimes finding Bulgarian at the tip of my tongue before even breeding an English thought. Such is novel to me as it has been awhile since I have been forced to twinkle my synapses. There is much to say about this country. Ridden with mountains that reach around 3,000 km and the sea whose waves cleanse the soul, the country is beautiful to say the least. Being a girl from New York City, embracing the nature around me has taken a new facet ... read more

Hi everyone!! It's been a few days, but I've reached the end of the first leg of my trip. I had limited access in Bulgaria, but I've kept a personal journal of all the sights that we've seen, and here is a summary. I don't have the exact dates of everything that we've seen, but all of these are in chronological order: MIKRE - A small rural village where Alex's grandfather lives. We met him and ate lunch at his house, and saw his goats - it was pretty funny, they were playing a game, trying to jump onto an old oil drum. ETERA - A preserved 19th century village mechanically powered by water. There is a very similar town like this in Ontario, I don't remember what it is called, but this place was ... read more
