Bosnia and Herzegovina's declaration of sovereignty in October 1991, was followed by a declaration of independence from the former Yugoslavia on 3 March 1992 after a referendum boycotted by ethnic Serbs. The Bosnian Serbs - supported by neighboring Serbia and Montenegro - responded with armed resistance aimed at partitioning the republic along ethnic lines and joining Serb-held areas to form a "Greater Serbia." In March 1994, Bosniaks and Croats reduced the number of warring factions from three to two by signing an agreement creating a joint Bosniak/Croat Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina. On 21 November 1995, in Dayton, Ohio, the warring parties initialed a peace agreement that brought to a halt three years of interethnic civil strife (the final agreement was signed in Paris on 14 December 1995). The Dayton Agreement retained Bosnia and Herzegovina's international boundaries and created a joint multi-ethnic and democratic government. This national government was charged with conducting foreign, diplomatic, and fiscal policy. Also recognized was a second tier of government comprised of two entities roughly equal in size: the Bosniak/Croat Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Bosnian Serb-led Republika Srpska (RS). The Federation and RS governments were charged with overseeing most government functions. The Office of the High Representative (OHR) was established to oversee the implementation of the civilian aspects of the agreement. In 1995-96, a NATO-led international peacekeeping force (IFOR) of 60,000 troops served in Bosnia to implement and monitor the military aspects of the agreement. IFOR was succeeded by a smaller, NATO-led Stabilization Force (SFOR) whose mission was to deter renewed hostilities. European Union peacekeeping troops (EUFOR) replaced SFOR in December 2004; their mission was to maintain peace and stability throughout the country. To be updated

We didn't spend a lot of time here. Basically a float through on the way to Montenegro and then back after Montenegro to Sarajevo, on through Mostar and out again to Croatia. But Bosnia-Hercegovina is definitely worth more of a look than we gave the place. Sarajevo and Mostar are well set up for tourists with plenty of pansions and many, many shops. I think to be honest that the aspect of Bosnia-Hercegovina that interested us most was the war and its aftermath. This was a war that even our children can remember - I think.(That's sad for old peaceniks who [View Full Entry]

Into Sarajevo

Scott’s parents were over in Europe for a few weeks and we all went to Zagreb and Sarajevo for the long Bank holiday weekend. Setting out late Friday evening, we arrived in to Zagreb just before 11 and then managed to get a bus into the city and then a taxi to our pokey little hotel. It was central so we forgave it for being tiny. The following morning we went out walking to the main square where there was a large statue of a man on a horse surrounded by huge billboards for Ray Bans, Pepie Jeans and other similar [View Full Entry]

Well, my school semester ended Wednesday, April 29th after three months in Florence (Firenze) and 8 days in Rome (Roma). The last few days in Rome were good, but I was ready to leave because it was too overwhelming with millions of tourists. Also, the ways to get around and to town were strange because we had to take metro’s (which were fine) but the buses didn’t have schedules. So, it was impossible to really plan a time to get into or leave town. On Sunday, a group of us left at 6:30 in the morning to make our way to [View Full Entry]

I'll have to admit that I knew embarrassingly little about Sarajevo before I came -- all I knew about it was that it's the capital of one of the longest country names I had the misfortune to memorize in geography class, and that its claim to fame (in my mind, mind you :P) was being the city that was bombed to smithereens in the recent Bosnian conflict. The moment I arrived at the bus station, I instantly learned a couple of important things: 1) The Lukavica bus station is a decrepit, sorry-for-an-excuse bus depot/hovel which serves as the secondary international bus [View Full Entry]

There's no war in sight... although there are reminders. Well we got up at the crack of dawn the other morning in Duborvnik to get to the bus station for our 800 bus away from the coast into Bosnia. Nothing was open and we were starved. I had a bag of paprika potato chips and a twix bar, and jeff had espresso from a machine and a bag of pretzels for breakfast. then off on the bus, which was pretty empty, further up the beautiful coastline. bosnia has a short coastline so we had a couple of border checks along the [View Full Entry]

So after our beautiful bus ride from Sarajevo, we finally arrived in the Mostar bus station and were bombarded by "soba" ladies. There were so many of them selling rooms that we could barely get off the bus and no matter how many times I told them I already had a room, they persisted. It was only until one of them noticed another bus pull into the station that they stopped. One of them would notice the other bus, point and yell and then they would all run to the other bus with their flyers. Mostar was interesting. On our way [View Full Entry]
