Bosnia and Herzegovina's declaration of sovereignty in October 1991, was followed by a declaration of independence from the former Yugoslavia on 3 March 1992 after a referendum boycotted by ethnic Serbs. The Bosnian Serbs - supported by neighboring Serbia and Montenegro - responded with armed resistance aimed at partitioning the republic along ethnic lines and joining Serb-held areas to form a "Greater Serbia." In March 1994, Bosniaks and Croats reduced the number of warring factions from three to two by signing an agreement creating a joint Bosniak/Croat Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina. On 21 November 1995, in Dayton, Ohio, the warring parties initialed a peace agreement that brought to a halt three years of interethnic civil strife (the final agreement was signed in Paris on 14 December 1995). The Dayton Agreement retained Bosnia and Herzegovina's international boundaries and created a joint multi-ethnic and democratic government. This national government was charged with conducting foreign, diplomatic, and fiscal policy. Also recognized was a second tier of government comprised of two entities roughly equal in size: the Bosniak/Croat Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Bosnian Serb-led Republika Srpska (RS). The Federation and RS governments were charged with overseeing most government functions. The Office of the High Representative (OHR) was established to oversee the implementation of the civilian aspects of the agreement. In 1995-96, a NATO-led international peacekeeping force (IFOR) of 60,000 troops served in Bosnia to implement and monitor the military aspects of the agreement. IFOR was succeeded by a smaller, NATO-led Stabilization Force (SFOR) whose mission was to deter renewed hostilities. European Union peacekeeping troops (EUFOR) replaced SFOR in December 2004; their mission was to maintain peace and stability throughout the country. To be updated

After arriving in Split, Croatia we begin the three hour bus ride to Medugorje.
We just returned from a week in Medjugorje. That is one very special place. Kate found a tour group from the U.S. who said that we could join them in Frankfurt. For a very reasonable price, we got a round trip flight to Split, Croatia, a three hour bus ride to Medjugorje in Bosnia & Herzegovina, a nice room and breakfast and dinner each day. The group was led by Steve Shawl of www.medjugorje.org, who has been conducting these tours to Medjugorje for the past 13 years. We were fortunate in that just as we were signing up to go, [View Full Entry]

Spila sva [View Full Entry]

Welcome to Bosna. In Republika Srbska.
... make sure you leave your usual tastebuds at home ... Ampak najprej lepo po vrsti. Torej! Tokrat odkrivamo Balkan v svoji najbolj pristni, e kar malo orientalski izvedbi. Pot naju je vodila mimo hrvaških naftnih polj (?!) do mejnega prehoda Gradiška (ki je nekoč bil Bosanska Gradiška, a so prvi del besedne zveze lepo prelepili in izbrisali), mimo naju so švigali avtomobili tudi z LJ, MB in CE registracijo - ovitek slovenski, vsebina izključno bosanska. In evo nas v Bosni! Za začetek so naju pozdravili kineski shop, pravoslavna in katoliška [View Full Entry]

After Budapest, we were facing the issue of where we wanted to travel to next on the trip. We had about 7 days until we were scheduled to be in Venice to meet up with our friends Pete and Fallon. We looked at where trains in Budapest would take us and we decided to go to Belgrade, Serbia. Our experience with the Serbs started right when we entered the train. We shared a compartment with a younger women named Stela. What an interesting and fun person to share a 7 hour train ride! We talked nonstop the whole way. A Serbian [View Full Entry]

The holiday inn...
The holiday inn...
the only hotel in the city that didn't close... it's now a famous site
Hello, hello Well, we simply couldn't help ourselves, we saw Bosnia on the map, and thought, who visits Bosnia?! Well, that in itself was enough to convince us that we should make a stop there. So, Sarajevo was our destination and we knew this time we were city bound and not tenting due to the unexploded land mines that haunt the city. So, after a crude introduction to the local food (imagine a McDonald’s cheeseburger without the cheese, but with a bit more grease) for breakfast, we set out to see the city. It didn't take long for the lingering history [View Full Entry]

he thought of breakfast wasn't enticing enough to get us out of bed willingly however our checkout time was 10am so an early start it was. Breakfast was eggs with bread which was o.k, but Rob had most of mine. Due to our early start we had plenty of time to get to the history museum. We walked past an information board that said that the temperature was -5°c which we definitely felt. On the way we stopped for a quick detour around the outdoor market. This was the site where two shells hit and 68 killed and a further 200 [View Full Entry]

We were not sure when we woke up whether our city tour was to go ahead or not. At breakfast the two guys from New Zealand (Dubrovnik bus, Mostar, restaurant etc) were on the table adjacent to us and in chatting we discovered they had also signed up for the tour. Breakfast was chicken soup for Rob and chickenless soup for me. If soup wasn't weird enough we also both had a little pot of rice pudding. The tour was run by Mustafa, the guy that picked us up from the station yesterday. He introduced himself and told us a little [View Full Entry]

We were offered tea/coffee when we got up and I foolishly accepted. I asked for black tea so she went to have a look. Steph watched as she brought the water to boil on the stove and then threw in a selection of herbs like a wicked witch. The tea (which came with biscuits) of course was not English tea nor was it even Indian tea, in fact it was quite yellow and tasted dreadful. Being polite, I drank it until she left the room and then I tipped it down the sink and had biscuits for breakfast. From the hostel [View Full Entry]
