Any significant excursion into the Balkans would not be complete without a skiing expedition on Mount Vlasic, Bosnia. And the best time to visit would arguably be around new year’s eve when the place is packed with tourists celebrating in the newly fallen snow. The Vlasic mountain ridge dominates the area like a massive fortress, with numerous springs, forests, and pastures and it is a tourist attraction site of significant economic importance in the region. Significant peaks include Paljenic, Decani, and Galicia and each is well marked with numerous routes that are linked to Travnik city by some 25 km of macadamized roads. The nearest airport to Vlasic resort is Banja Luka International airport which is 75 km away. The journey has well and truly commenced. I’ve managed to avoid the rain even though it has been raining, I’ve managed to get over a pass, andI’ve managed to get from A to B. Not bad me thinks for four days on the road. I’m inwardly rather pleased with progress and with my bicycle too. Tomorrow I will be in Sarajevo as I really didn’t want to push 98km today - not after a 10.45am start! When I awoke this morning in Travnik, a lovely provincial town which was in its heyday the administrative headquarters for the Ottoman rulers in Bosnia, it was to the sound of rain. From the Montenegrin border Jon and I bought a ticket for a bus that would take us to neighbouring Bosnia & Herzegovina and the city of Mostar - the very name of which evoke images of bloody carnage and, of course, thatbridge. But things didn't quite go to plan. What we thought would be the bus taking the direct route inland to Mostar instead turned into a coastal route up through Croatia. High above the sea the 'Jewel of the Adriatic' suddenly came into view - Dubrovnik - the medieval walled city was very beautiful but I chose not to stay. I would leave it for another time when I could stomach the crowds.
