Belgium became independent from the Netherlands in 1830 and was occupied by Germany during World Wars I and II. It has prospered in the past half century as a modern, technologically advanced European state and member of NATO and the EU. Tensions between the Dutch-speaking Flemings of the north and the French-speaking Walloons of the south have led in recent years to constitutional amendments granting these regions formal recognition and autonomy. We made our way from Ghent to Antwerp, Belgium which was a nice short 45 min drive. Found a great campsite on the opposite side of the Schelde river to the City. The weather was really nice and hot so we hopped on the bikes and rode over to the city. We had to go down a large elevator to a tunnel below the river then ride across to the other side. Was really quite cool. We just walked around the city and had a few beers down by the river in the sun. We then went to a really busy [View Full Entry]

Moving on from Buenos Aires actually meant going back to lovely Uruguay, to spend some last few days there with all the wonderful people I met here. Goodbyes are always sad, which is why I am not going to elaborate - only this much: I did consider staying here, for various reasons - lovely people, Candombe, Grappamiel, my spanish is better than my french, Boris the cat, Redes is great, my housemates are great....basically, I will miss being here. But I considered only very briefly, because of course I have a whole variety of reasons to go back to Brussels - [View Full Entry]

Well, today I got my test back. I didn't do amazing, but I didn't fail. I got above average in the class so no complaints here. We also got a new teacher for class. I didn't realize that I would have to deal with 2 professors from the University of Florida. Anyway, this one isn't too bad. I'll get over it. On Thursday night, my host sister, Dadou, her sister's boyfriend, Mike, and I went to Delirium. It's a world famous bar here in Brussels. They offer 2,004 beers. There is a giant book that lists all the beers. We chose [View Full Entry]

Hello Everyone! It’s Monday night here in London and we’re relaxing after a long a busy weekend! I booked a weekend trip for us both to Bruges in Belgium as part of Robs birthday present. We had to get up at the unfortunate hour of 5.30am and make our way to the coach stop for a 7am departure. I don’t really know what we expected but in the end there was only 19 people on our tour, which was good for the space factor on the coach but it would have been a bit more lively with some more people. There [View Full Entry]

Sunday 8th June - Monday 9th June We arrived in Belgium about 4pm, we were about an hour late as there was an accident further ahead which meant we were rerouted to another station. This caused us a few issues in getting to our hotel. Once we were settled in we went into the tourist area and ha a look around. Here we got to see Grand Place, Marquis Pis (a small statue of a boy urinating, one wonders why it is so famous,) and the Brussels Cathedral. You can see most of the sights in a couple of hours so [View Full Entry]

Dinner and a drink

I had never got the idea of putting mayonnaise on hot chips, it was always tomato sauce, but after getting some fries from the main square in Brugge with the different kind of mayonnaise to what we have in Australia it makes sense. Pretty tasty. My few days in Brugge were pretty good. Got there late-ish and didnt see much the first night despite the sun being up until 10:30pm, ran into some Aussies in the main square and chatted to them for a while then went back to the hostel and crashed out. Jumped on a canal cruise the next [View Full Entry]

June 12, 13, 2008 BRUSSELS, Belgium Another 3 hour drive and we are in Belgium. This is the first real “rain out “day we have had. ( double header tomorrow I guess ). Awoke to clouds and drizzle and drove through rain most of the drive. Maybe better tomorrow. We have been In Brussels before and liked it very much. Very civilized, great food with lots of variety, and a relatively safe city and of course lots and lots of chocolate. Not such a big problem for Alice but I have a real weakness for all things chocolate. ( and they [View Full Entry]

Gent

I was there in 2006, in Gent. The Cathedral is impressing, the streets are very neat and narrow, a bit too tidy and boring for my taste. Everything is rather comformist, and the rest looks like Holland. [View Full Entry]

Checked out of the hostel and put my stuff into storage at the station then went for a look at the cathedral. It is a big and spectacular building but it isnt decorated that impressively. Of course I had to climb to the top lol. Starting chatting with an English girl and Japanese girl while up there, the English girl was gorgeous :) Had a drink with them and will hopefully catch up with the English girl at the end of my trip. Train journey to Brugge was a bit... strange. First train to Aachen was 15 mins late (in Germany [View Full Entry]
