Belgium became independent from the Netherlands in 1830 and was occupied by Germany during World Wars I and II. It has prospered in the past half century as a modern, technologically advanced European state and member of NATO and the EU. Tensions between the Dutch-speaking Flemings of the north and the French-speaking Walloons of the south have led in recent years to constitutional amendments granting these regions formal recognition and autonomy. Here is how our decision was made to go to Brugge.... Friend from hostel in Amsterdam: "Hey, where are you girls going next?" Kim & Katie: "We're not sure, but we were thinking about going to Brussels" Friend: "You should go to Brugge instead" Kim & Katie: "Ok!" So, yea it was a pretty random plan. We literally packed up our stuff in Amsterdam, and headed to the train station to buy a one-way ticket to Brugge. We are glad we made this decision though. The train ride was short in comparison to what we have grown accustomed to, we arrived [View Full Entry]

Hi folks! This entry is merely an attempt to see how this site works. Within less than 24 hours I'll depart from Brussels to New York and from there out I'll fly to Lima, Peru. I'll be staying in Lima from Tuesday the second until Saturday 5th of July and will fly from Lima to Pucallpa. I'll join a group of fellow adventurers to go deep into the jungle to stay in a Shipibo village. During our stay we'll learn about shamanism, we'll have a look into medicinal and psychoactive plants and we'll have the oportunity to join in an ayahuasca [View Full Entry]

On Thursday (6/26), after class, two girls from my class (Karlie and Erin) and I left Brussels for Paris. I was so excited. These girls were the perfect company as well. Karlie is from LA and attends San Fransisco State University. She is hilarious and we are very similar; needless to say, she kept the trip entertaining. Erin is from Iowa and goes to Bradley. She is very quiet, but had quick witty responses to anything that Karlie or I said. My first international train ride wasn't too eventfull except the group that was sitting near us had at least three [View Full Entry]

Brugge

28/6 Today Tim, Alex and I made our way to Ieper (Ypres) to see the Menin Gate and the other WW1 memorials that are there, we had hoped to do a bus tour but they weren't running them this weekend because of a car rally. Walking to the train station I was almost run down 3 times by mopeds on a bike/walk path, aparently thats the done thing. This town my seem a little sleepy but boy can it be dangerous. We arrived in Iepes about 2.30pm after a 2 and a half hour train journey. As we got into the [View Full Entry]

Certainty

Europe » Belgium » Flemish Brabant » Leuven
Certainty The thing about traveling is that it gives you the change just to lay back and and do the things you want to do through escaping our daily, serious lives. For me and Mathias, my friend that will be joining me, it means no more cost accounting (me) or making complex engineering designs of apartment blocks(Mathias). But is it just that, running away from life? Well, for some people it actually means leaving the very lives they chose to live. Relaxing at the poolside, sipping a Mai-Tai from a coconut through a bent straw while the umbrella won't stay [View Full Entry]

I <3 Brugge

Europe » Belgium » West Flanders » Brugge
Okay so this is officially one of my favorite cities EVER. Kate AND Ian AND Dillon here, by the by. Last night we met a couple from Chile who are in the room next to us. They're super nice and Ian gets to practice his Spanish, because they speak verrrrry little English. We also met a lady from Italy who was really sweet too, so we stayed up pretty late in the little common room area chatting it up. Brugge. Damn. This place is one of the most beautiful quaint little cities I have ever been too. It is like walking [View Full Entry]

En Bruges

Europe » Belgium » West Flanders » Bruges
Kate here...is that any surprise? ;) Well last night was fun at the hostel. Here's a funny story for ya. Dillon was down in the common area drinking, and Ian and I had called it a night and were in our room watching The Office on the iPod. There was one other guy up there too, and he was also in bed. We hear someone fumbling around with the door trying to open it (you need a key), and we figured it was Dillon, drunk. So I go to open it and the other guy was laughing and says "No, let's [View Full Entry]

Well boys have settled in now, and I think their body clocks have now reached Belgium time as they are much more settled. We have done a few things this week, first being the Sports Carnavel on Sunday, it was pretty much a fair with all sorts of activities for kids, like bouncy castle, bike riding, climbing, trampolining etc etc, so Joe Joe had an awesome time there as you could imagine! We went shopping on Monday, and I spent too much money as I do when I go shopping so the last few days I have had to be good [View Full Entry]

Bruges

Europe » Belgium » West Flanders » Bruges
