Brussels Travel Blogs

Background: Belgium became independent from the Netherlands in 1830 and was occupied by Germany during World Wars I and II. It has prospered in the past half century as a modern, technologically advanced European state and member of NATO and the EU. Tensions between the Dutch-speaking Flemings of the north and the French-speaking Walloons of the south have led in recent years to constitutional amendments granting these regions formal recognition and autonomy.

We flew from Sweden to Brussels Belgium, NATO headquarters. Once again our plane was full of young soccer players, can we ever get away from them? The airport there is very large and beautiful with all the announcements & signs in 4 languages making everything very easy for us. Once we arrived in Brussels we caught a train to Liege which is about 100 miles south of Brussels and where Cecile lives. Well really we had to catch 2 trains. In Europe there is usually a train station underneath the airports making it very easy for transport to and from the [View Full Entry]

Bruxelles a nuit

Homage to Belgium!
I'm in that pre-trip-planning mode again. You know, the kind that gets me in trouble when fellow travellers complain I'm making all the important decisions, etc., whine, etc. (Never mind they're totally indecisive in the first place...okay, I'll back off.) Before I go back to the States this fall, I want to make one last trip back to England. Think of it as paying homage to all the dead guys (and women) who made Senior year especially enjoyable (honestly!) with AP English Lit. On my list of places to go and do are: --London (see plays--Les Mis and Phantom--as well as [View Full Entry]

Wednesday, August 13, 2003 - Brussels, Belgium What’s up with Europe and pickpocket? This is my third personal encounter with pickpockets through our backpack journey in Europe. Ko Sing drove us to Zaandam Centraal around 7:20am to catch a train to Brussels via Amsterdam. When our 8:23am train finally arrived in Amsterdam Centraal platform, we were boarding the second class passenger car in order: Jason and Ryan stood in front of me, making me an easy target for thieves, as my backpack hanging loosely behind my back without anybody worthy keeping an eye on it. Until i came to Europe i never felt the need to climb to the highest point in town. Never been to the highest point in Ridgefield or South Salem, (in Saratoga it is Tower, so i've been there, and in ithaca you ahve to work hard not to climb high points) not that they are stellar examples but it is true. So i climbed the "belfort" (belfry) in both Brugge and Gent, since Amsterdam seems to be the only place i have not climbed to the highest point in town. Belforts have several things in common, like spiral steep stone staircases, [View Full Entry]

Brussels is a quite nice city. Nice buildings, lots of sights, lots of institutions. Some famous monuments and statues scattered over the city for tourists. Grand Place with surrounding buildings is quite impressive. The Pole Star is not very impressive. Our party has decided to visit this Finnish establishment to have a northern drink and sing a song. It's Sunday. The Pole Star is not opened on Sundays. Our Finnish representative is disappointed, to the extent that a double "Ahhh" echoes in the night upon realizing this offence. Maybe Monday the Finns want to drink. Our party, this time l [View Full Entry]

The wee pissing boy
The wee pissing boy
We weren't in Brussels very long before we went in search of the Maneken Pis.
After being inspire by various brilliant travel blogs, and being driven by the mundanity of dermatology revision, I'm going to start recounting my travels. And possibily adding new things, as times passes on This is a quickie, that'll probably be edited greatly. Belgium was the first stop in continental Europe. With my buddy Yen Nian. As yes, it did rain...a lot! Was also my first flight with Ryanair, the start of a long and fulfilling relationship with budget air travel. We arrived at some godawful airport in the middle of Belgium, not speaking a word of French or Flemish, but miracu [View Full Entry]
