Background: Belgium became independent from the Netherlands in 1830 and was occupied by Germany during World Wars I and II. It has prospered in the past half century as a modern, technologically advanced European state and member of NATO and the EU. Tensions between the Dutch-speaking Flemings of the north and the French-speaking Walloons of the south have led in recent years to constitutional amendments granting these regions formal recognition and autonomy.

Dan went to Brussels for three weeks to do the simulator--part of his training for the French Air Force. The last week he was there, I went to visit him and we toured around. Unhappily, Brussels does not hold a nice image for us. Dan lost his wallet there. Also, It was FREEZING cold and rainy much of the time. It was our first European Christmas market, though, where we bought most of our Christmas presents for family members. [View Full Entry]

Here Abigail is sporting her knight costume which she has insisted on wearing almost every day since Christmas.
When we last reported we were "freezing in Florence". We are now nice and warm and a lot has happened. We found celebrating Christmas in Belgium to be an inspired experience for the whole family. We were able to invent new traditions that will hopefully stay with us for years to come and additionally we were able to escape a lot of the harried chaos that usually accompanies holidays in the States. Perhaps it was the lack of pre holiday parties or the lack of travel over the actual few days but it was such a relaxing time for all of [View Full Entry]

I've had a very long day, without any real reason too. And we actually only had the waffle portion of the title. I did, by the way, manage to get on a train yesterday with relative easy to come to Brussels to meet Kira, through the first train I wanted to catch wasn't running because the train in front of it broke, so I just caught the next one. It's about 3 hours by train from Amsterdam to Brussels and I used my hour in the train station to buy some much needed shampoo that was confiscated by the Russian airport [View Full Entry]

Another Ryan Air holiday bound to be plagued with certain uncomfortable elements; and yet, in the balance between comfort and cost we happily opt for the cheaper and more dangerous route. After enduring the ominously error free flight and bus ride, we arrived in a chilly Brussels, properly decoded another confusing metro system and met our couch surfer host. Belgium is a symbol of internationalism. They are the capital for the EU's parliament, NATO, and many other global governing entities. They have long had an active role to play in peace keeping, and their former African colonies of Cong [View Full Entry]

Vachel Lindsay After 5 months back in Blighty working in a call centre for a Debt Collection agency, I decided to take a short trip to Brussels. I've handed in my notice at the company, as I'm going to return to Africa in January 2008. I took advantage of a special offer on Eurostar - a return journey with a nights accommodation. I had 3 days off work. I left my Dad's house in Kineton on the 10th of December, taking the train down to London. I [View Full Entry]

We were supposed to spend two nights in Brussels but Liz had some bank trouble and we weren't able to leave until Thursday afternoon. The first thing we had to do was figure out how to play the Amsterdam train station game. We stood in several lines and walked around confused before finally figuring it out. We learned that you have to go to a special kiosk, type in your destination and take a number and then depending on whether it's a domestic trip or an international one, wait in two separate areas with several hundred other people crowded around a [View Full Entry]

These are mostly all people I work with during the day @ Jean's bar, having a few drinks on a Friday nite!
Monday, October 1, 2007-Thursday, October 4th, 2007 Well, not much to report except work and sleeping for these few days….super exciting! Friday, October 5th, 2007 Today was my day off for the week. I spent most of the morning and afternoon out at the library checking emails, playing around on the internet and so forth. I came home around four and got ready for a night out with the people I work with during the day at Corcoran’s. We were meeting up in St. Michael to go to a bar where Jean (who I work with during the day) works during [View Full Entry]
