Once the center of power for the large Austro-Hungarian Empire, Austria was reduced to a small republic after its defeat in World War I. Following annexation by Nazi Germany in 1938 and subsequent occupation by the victorious Allies in 1945, Austria's status remained unclear for a decade. A State Treaty signed in 1955 ended the occupation, recognized Austria's independence, and forbade unification with Germany. A constitutional law that same year declared the country's "perpetual neutrality" as a condition for Soviet military withdrawal. Following the Soviet Union's collapse in 1991 and Austria's entry into the European Union in 1995, some Austrians have called into question this neutrality. A prosperous, democratic country, Austria entered the Economic and Monetary Union in 1999. To be updated

Grüsse aus Salzburg, We left Vienna by train at the respectable time of 10 am and got excellent comfortable seats in the 1st class compartment. This time we took some fresh sandwiches and drinks from the station kiosk and were set for the trip. Departed in nice sunny weather and arrived at Salzburg in drizzle and low cloud, although could still see craggy mountain tops poking out thru come mist. Lovely. We intended to just make it the one overnight here in order to jump off onto day trips or proceed further into the "unknown". We have no plans from here [View Full Entry]

Walking across the river on the morning of October 6th.
Danielle and I decided that we needed a few days away from the deserts and dust of Dubai. After visiting a couple websites detailing what the southwestern part of Austria had to offer, we chose Villach for the first three days of our vacation to be followed by two days in Vienna. October 5th we flew Emirates from Dubai to Vienna (excellent service and product - Don't know how we'll be able to travel on any other carrier) and picked-up a rental car. The drive from Vienna Airport is not complicated as the A2 is connected to the airport by a [View Full Entry]

We departed Prague in drizzling rain, although still not too cold yet. We did a "dummy" run at Pra train station the day before leaving to purchase our tickets and so we would know where we were going when catching our train. Even still, we had a few moments pf mild panic when we arrived to depart. Appears they dont put up the departure platform until a few moments prior to train leaving. Toss in sheer bedlam, squilloins of people running to see if they can get in your way, nothing in English and dozens of platforms to choose between! Eventually, [View Full Entry]

This blog is dedicated to my Mum who turns 65 today. Officially she can now change her occupation from "housewife" to "retired". Did a tour of Austria yonks ago, so wasn´t keen to re-do the major tourist sights. First stop was Vienna. Visited the Schloss Belvedere to admire some paintings from local dude Gustav Klimt among others. 2006 is the 250th anniversary of Mozart´s birth, so there are performances everywhere. We got some standing tickets to the opera "The Marriage of Figaro" for the bargain basement price of 2 Euro´s each. Then it was onto Salzburg. Really pretty town and easy [View Full Entry]

Quick Notes: 1. Shout out to Caroline for leaving us fun comments and correcting our music knowledge. She get many European points 2. Austria gets an A from us - good food, lots of meat, great beer, very clean, nice people (even though the reputation is otherwise), fun castles, beautiful mountains, good public transportation....you get the idea. 3. Beer never tastes better than after 10 days in wine country and a 9 hour drive. 4. Did you know that Mozart was from Salzburg (insert huge dose of sarcasm here)??? Because if you didnt, youre reminded about it on every block - [View Full Entry]

Mountain biking in Hopfgarten

 Europe » Austria » Tyrol
Laurie didn't make it to bike riding along with a few others. Surprise, surprise. After everyone picked up their bikes we headed off on the wrong side of the road for the start of our 4 hour, 25km, mountain bike adventure. Started off nice and easy we were just soaking up the scenery. Then they told us this was only the beginning and we now had the mountain to climb. We both did alright getting to the top. Krista only stopped and walked for the last 100 metres or so. Some of the other girls walked almost the whole way up. [View Full Entry]
