Once the center of power for the large Austro-Hungarian Empire, Austria was reduced to a small republic after its defeat in World War I. Following annexation by Nazi Germany in 1938 and subsequent occupation by the victorious Allies in 1945, Austria's status remained unclear for a decade. A State Treaty signed in 1955 ended the occupation, recognized Austria's independence, and forbade unification with Germany. A constitutional law that same year declared the country's "perpetual neutrality" as a condition for Soviet military withdrawal. Following the Soviet Union's collapse in 1991 and Austria's entry into the European Union in 1995, some Austrians have called into question this neutrality. A prosperous, democratic country, Austria entered the Economic and Monetary Union in 1999. To be updated

another rainy day

Europe » Austria » Vienna State » Vienna
It's going to be tough to top Cesky Krumlov. I was so sad that we had to leave today. We've all said that when we come back to Europe we will make sure to end our trip there and chill for the last days of the trip... that and we want to come back when it's warm. After leaving the internet cafe in Cesky it started raining and got really cold. Stupidly I gave all my laundry to the hostel and was wearing shorts. They hang dry the clothes so I had to brave out the rest of the night in [View Full Entry]

Vienna was beautiful. Phuong and I saw Stephansdom, the Rathaus and the Votivkirche. Stephansdom was very elaborate, very beautiful, with artwork and statues from different periods, including some from the 13th century! We also went to the Sächer hotel to try the *famous* (at least in Vienna!) Sächertorte, which is a very light, fruity chocolate cake. I bought a small one to take home to my parents! Yes, taking the train through the country, everything did look quaint and perfect. In the city, it´s still a *city* experience, but it´s fun just the same! [View Full Entry]

Yes, The Sound of Music is everywhere in Salzburg. As a matter of fact, our hostel plays the film every few hours or so for the guests. I'm sure the workers there LOVE that! Haha. For any Sound of Music fans out there, go to Salzburg and take the tour! Because I've never actually seen the movie, I did not choose to pay the 30 Euros ($35?) to take the tour. Salzburg has breathtaking views of the mountains, which look *similar* to the mountains here in Colorado, only sharper and taller. It's very green here, too. With the cobblestone streets [View Full Entry]

Hi everyone! Sorry that this email is coming to you all so late! We hope everyone is doing well! We certainly are. I have taken over 100 pictures already and can only put up a few because of time, so I apologize if you were expecting more pictures. :( Maybe that next blog entry? Or you can ask me in person to show you the pictures some time... But I brought some of the highlights, anyway. Connie and I hope that you are all well and happy and miss you dearly (it's true!). We have heard that the weather is quite [View Full Entry]

Our hostel has free internet! I'm very excited about this. We arrived in Vienna this morning at 8:30am from an overnight train from Venice. The first thing we noticed from the train was how green Austria is. We later found out that that is because it rains ALL the time here! Haha. After finding our hostel (the one with the free internet! yay!), Phuong and I set out to find Shönbrunn Palace. We walked through the gardens in the drizzle and found a small restaurant with live music. I ordered a coffee and an apfelstrüdel, and both were amazing! The [View Full Entry]

It was definitely a day for laughing. And crying. I can't really recount it all here, it just doesn't work that way. But I do know that when Boonie and I found ourselves on the way home on the train at ten pm devouring mini bottles of Vodka from the train dining cart, it had been one of my better days out. So the significance of holding the rod? Sorry, it's not as dirty as you'd like to think it is. I simply asked a gentleman who was fishing on the lake at dusk if I may hold his rod for [View Full Entry]

...was to take the Sound of Music tour. There, I've said it. It's out in the open, it's now available for anyone to see. But I defy ANYONE not to be impressed with the skills of a woman who can make curtains look that good. And Captain Von Trapp. Such a man! So handsome! Swoon... Go on! Get it down from the shelf, dust it off, and pop the ol' VHS tape in. You know you want to. It won't disappoint. I am sixteen, going on seventeen... P.S And Salzburg itself? WUNDERVOLL! (Photos coming soon) [View Full Entry]

Here it is! They are currently doing renovation on it, though.
Hi everyone! Connie and I are about to leave Salzburg for Vienna, but we wanted to write about our adventures while we had the chance! The weather here has been up and down - one hour we were really warm in a t-shirt and pants, the next hour I was tempted to put gloves on - but it's so pretty here and everyone is really friendly and hospitable. Here's a recap of our adventures here: Tuesday: After having arrived in Salzurg around 7 pm, we ordered pizza and conked out around 8 pm. It was exhausting but our beds (with those [View Full Entry]

Headed off on our day trip south to Kehlsteinhaus (Eagle's Nest - Hitler's old haunt) and stopped in on Hellbrunn palace where they have a magic water fountain that does lots of funny things but it was out of action because of the weather (cold and drizzly), had breaky at a nice little cafe in Anif. Got to Obersalzburg, nazi barracks and the point where you catch a bus up to Eagle's Nest. Unfortunately the road to Eagles Nest was closed until June 3 - bummer. So had a look around Obersalzburg where there exists the original bunker complex, pretty cool. [View Full Entry]
