Once the center of power for the large Austro-Hungarian Empire, Austria was reduced to a small republic after its defeat in World War I. Following annexation by Nazi Germany in 1938 and subsequent occupation by the victorious Allies in 1945, Austria's status remained unclear for a decade. A State Treaty signed in 1955 ended the occupation, recognized Austria's independence, and forbade unification with Germany. A constitutional law that same year declared the country's "perpetual neutrality" as a condition for Soviet military withdrawal. Following the Soviet Union's collapse in 1991 and Austria's entry into the European Union in 1995, some Austrians have called into question this neutrality. A prosperous, democratic country, Austria entered the Economic and Monetary Union in 1999. To be updated

On the road again...

Hello from Vienna! Well, it was the best of times, and today was the worst of times. But somehow we managed to stay smiling! Friday after classes, me and JC from Hamilton (who's also studying at the University of Ljubljana with me) took off on 7 hour train ride to Vienna. We arrived late, so basically we just found our hostel and crashed. Eric and Alana as we pack in. We are here getting onto the boat to Hallstatt, because Hallstatt Bahnhof is gegenüber a lake from the actual town.

This is the story of the Nature from Hallstatt. The principal players are myself, Eric, Alia and Alana. A little Greece in Austria. Democracy is housed in this neo-Greek temple. The lady with the golden helmet is Athena...gooddess of wisdom.

9:30PM we boarded our night train to Vienna and took our seats in good spirits and excitement. That, in and of itself, was quite an accomplishment considering we were stuck in a steamy-hot compartment along with four other grumpy Polish people with no hope (really) of getting a single wink of comfortable sleep. Emily, periodically throughout the 8-hour ordeal, stepped out into the corridor for a breath of fresh air. Ok, this is from the Nationalfeiertag (Austria's independence day, more or less) in Vienna. Everything is closed, but there are celebrations, and stuff all over town. For instance, the Hofburg and Parlament are having 'Tag der Ofnen Türe' (Day of open doors) so you can go see some of the government buildings for free. The army (Bundesheer) was also on display celebrating at Heldenplatz (Hero's Square). in Frankfurt mussten wir sogar mit dem Zug driven, um zu unserem Flieger zu gelangen,..

Wie es halt so ist, schiebt man(n) alles so weit wie möglich hinaus, und zum Schluss bekommt man noch mal richtig Streß! The city of Mozart and The Sound of Music

We found a beautiful place to rest for a while. We stayed here for 5 nights to catch our breath and relax before the next leg of the journey. Salzburg is such a great city and we got to stay in the old part of town so its pedestrians only, a great change from the big busy cities. Modern Art Monestary
Some modern art sculptures in the courtyard of Sift Melk. I can only imagine the monks who live here.

This was not a school trip, and more like a 'sign up and go to Wachau valley trip' but it was good none the less. We started by going to Melk Abby (actually... I should start with the typical). Old Portion of Klosterneuberg
This is an old part of Klosterneuberg that was brushed to the side to make the grandiose waste of plaster that would become the Baroque version.

Field trip to Niederösterreich, where we got to see Klosterneuberg. Kloster means monestary, but unfortunately I didnt see any monks. The place was founded back in the days of the Babenburgs as part of one of those 'monestaries with a built in palace' deals, presumably so that God will forgive you if youre completely corrupt. Anyway, it became the obsession of Charles VI of the house of Habsburg, (a Habsburg in the 17th century), who tried to make it into a huge baroque thing out of it.
