Cheetahs feast on rabbits at the zooHaving been told Vienna was an expensive place to visit we were surprised to find an apartment available for our two night stay for only £15 each per night. It included a nice bathroom, kitchen area with hob, microwave, toaster, fridge and kettle and even had a flat screen tv which we used to watch the World Cup games.
We had arrived too early to check in so spent a couple of hours at a local bar drinking corona before settling in.
All the travelling had started to take its toll and we took the opportunity to sleep for a few hours before going out in the evening. We walked down the side of a river until we reached the centre and thought the cathedral at night was beautiful. McDonald's was one of the few places still open so that's where we ate! Not quite local cuisine!
We had planned to do a day trip to Bratislava but decided we would postpone it and instead look round Vienna since we had slept through most of the previous day.
We went to the zoo which is in the grounds of
Palace gardensa lovely palace and is also the oldest zoo in Europe. It had a great selection of animals; panda, koala and polar bears, tigers, lions and cheetahs, plus more, a cool forest walkway and an area where you could pet and feed different breeds of goats which was amusing. A particular highlight was watching 3 baby cheetahs feeding on a rabbit and the polar bears rushing around eating fish as the zoo keepers put there food all over their enclosure.
We ate some lovely noodles and sushi which only cost a few pounds from just across the road from the zoo. Then head off back to the main square to see mozarts only remaining residence and go inside the cathedral which was nice.
We sat on chairs outside one of the bars and had a couple of glasses of wine which were served to us along with a plate of olives and cheese. Mmm.
For dinner we cooked up some pasta with tomato sauce with a side of Caesar salad. Once again beer was cheap so we had a couple of cans of Austrian beer to wash it down.
Outside mozarts house Though it was a fairly short stay it was a nice city and easy to find our way around. And though I never thought I'd say it, it was nice to be using euros again after so many different currencies!
In the morning we packed up our stuff and got a train to Bratislava. We only intended to stay for a day trip and head on to Budapest in the evening but the low prices enticed us and we decided to book a room and stay for the night. At £10 each it seemed worth it.
We found a lovely local Slovakian bar where we decided to eat. We each had vegetable and lentil soup, followed by a plate of chips with chicken stuffed with broccoli and a creamy sauce. And about 14 pints of strong beer between us! The total bill only came to 27 euros!!
Next we walked around the old town which is really beautiful and visited the blue church which I'd seen recommended online which was worth going to see.
Then more food! This time we had bread with a mixture of spreads
The blue church Bratislava(all cheese based, some with garlic, some with onions etc) and then pork neck with sauerkraut and dumplings finishing off with a strange whiskey flavoured pancake thing and a really weird potato based dessert which really wasn't my kind of dessert!
Our hostel was easy enough to find and our room was clean and comfortable but the wifi was rubbish and we were up several flights of stairs. Not at all bad for the money though and it had a very central location.
We got up early to check out and after a walk round the shops with an ice cream (absolute bargain at 60 cents per scoop!) we head back to the bar we had found when we first arrived in Bratislava. This time we had vegetable and noodle soup followed by chicken and creamy mash topped with thinly sliced cucumber. The two course meal only set us back 3.50 euros each. It was a great little place to chill out whilst waiting for our train.
And now we're on the train to Budapest.
